some of the best HOMEGROWN BANDS in Big O's New School Rock

bushmen.jpg

this is an EP released in 2000 by the Bushmen. they are the darlings of singapore reggae. they really opened up people's eyes/ears towards reggae, especially for those who thought reggae is 'No Woman No Cry'. i guess they make dreads popular. coz before them, i see a handful only. and there spawns more local reggae artists/bands here. i remembered regularly visiting Zuma and Coco Carrib where they performed in their early years. they help make reggae mainstream among normal ppl too. a lady Marketing Exec i know says she loves reggae after being exposed to the Bushmen! hmmmmmm...

the funny thing is lots of 'wannabes' starts popping-up everywhere too. i even have a guy telling me he is a Rastafarian coz he sports dreads and visits Hard Rock Cafe regularly to watch the Bushmen. hehehehehehh... wth...

too bad Syed left the band. he's one of the best frontman with a distinctive vocal style. i've not seen them performed for so long, so not so sure how they are like now. and Rahman and Hassan mentioned they did some recording for new material. but that was ages ago. and there is nothing new from them. i was actually hoping they would come up with an album. oh well, we still have this great EP by them... this is a great band with nice/humble people.

wooot!! we got to stand up stand up !!
alls i can say is R.E.S.P.E.C.T to these guys..

nicest ppl around too!

bro..the sleeve got lyrics or not? :D

hahahhahhahha!
yup there is lyrics. u want them?

and Restam is one hell of a smooth guitarist. he played 'black magic woman' and nailed the tone with a tele and a bunch of boss pedals!

the is one of my all time fav album by a local malay rock band. this album is released in 1991. Lovehunters - Blues Untuk Rakyat (translation - Blues for the Nation, or Blues for the People.) this is their 3rd or 2nd album, i can't remember! and the line-up is different from the one which recorded the English album. this album is produced by Ramli Sarip himself! (King or Father of Rock) this album has great songs, guitars (Moliano rules!), lyrics, from what i can remember! (the last time i listened to this was like maybe 10yrs++ ago! hahahahahha... constantly playing this casette then. how i wish i have a walkman now! anw i'm looking for the CD too!

look at the pic in the sleeve! the guitarist (Moliano) has got a 70's tele custom (i think!) and there is a white strat at the side (the rave for guitarist then!) and the bassist (yazid) have a 50's sort-of P-bass (i'm not sure as the pick-up and pickguard looks kind of different. might be a diff offshoot by Fender...)

2 more kool CD's in my crate of musik: Urban Karma's 1st (top-2001) and 2nd (bottom-2003) EP's. they are Singapore's own Soulfly! Bo and Naz mentioned they get inspiration from Max's, but instead uses malay/javanese traditional percussion/instrument instead of brazilian. 1st EP combined with a song each from other bands. (Axed Ministers, 7 Pound Vein, etc)

try to point out Grain and shred5. they are in the pic somewhere!

The top green album was totally recorded at MYX Studio. sumtime in 1999.
The 2nd bottom one was entirely recorded at my makeshift Home studio beside my bed.

wah echoist well done!

I HEARD    8) that Earshot at The Art House at The Old Parliament at 1 Old Parliament Lane 179429 still have the BigO releases.

The New School Rock IV cover looks crappy cos it was a last minute job. Their computer crashed.

I was an avid reader of BigO then and still have those old copies. Those were the good old days man.

I felt that they've lost their edge after a while and wasn't relevant anymore to me when they started featuring too many other stuff. Now to think back, it was probably due to my age then not being able to relate to stuff like that.

There are a few other hardcore bands during that time like Voiceout, Swirling Madness and Foursides that were pretty right up there.

hahahahahhaha! u and u punya obsession dengan I HEARD! hahahahahha! (but well, i understand and i AGREE 100%)

The New School Rock IV cover actually looked like someone uses Words to do or something!!! hehehehehheh... i guess someone played Quake (the rage then rite?) too much till the mac (or pc) died! must be u ehhh?

BigO was great while it lasted. and i was like u too, my interest started to wane slowly. especially as they started to be more 'politically conscious' towards the end... but hell, they were the ONLY local mag insane enough to lovingly put local artists in the front cover nearly every month! even FHM singapore don't do that as often! so, extremely huge inflated kudo's to them!!!
and indeed those were good days. imagine this: Napalm Death, Morbid Angel fans, Smashing Pumpkins, Sonic Youth fans, Oasis, U2 fans, Judge, Shelter fans, Curve, My Bloody Valentine fans, Bon Jovi, GnR fans, Operation Ivy, Circle Jerks fans, etc... can all be at the same gig, and living, slamdancing happily together. none bashing the others' music or style or clothes or face... tell me those weren't good...

Those days of blind posing "UNITY" are over man. :D Also lets not paint such a pretty picture of the "unity" then. Skins and mohawks clash all the time. The metal guys always stand far back with folded arms. Trendy indie kids are all over the place. Fights always happen in the pit.

Banning of slamdancing then was a big issue. It had made all gig goers SIT and listen, while Stompin Ground played. Sighs...

Oh well... on with the program! :D

I love BigO... and its coverage of Singapore music in the mid-90's. Towards the last 2 years, it sorta became a personal political soapbox against the PAP and the government for the Cheah brothers (the publishers). Which is fine actually though I thought the focus on the music became lesser.

However, what I found it hard to swallow was the fact that they were lambasting the government for not having the balls to admit its own mistakes and sweeping everything under the carpet. There were a few incidents where BigO reported wrongly about the PAP as well. There weren't corrections made on their end or admittance of their mistakes.

Doesn't separate them very much from their enemy eh?

lol. good point.

BigOs articles although very much political towards the end, i think they're just lashing out at the political restrictions that i think at that time hampered a lot of creative expressions, and these guys thrive on creative expressions from the local bands. Serves as an eye opener to some extent but yeah i guess the local music part deviated a bit.

The cover designs were priceless! Little did most of the covers. Esam did some also i think. lol..ok designer's point of view.

hahaha..i remember they even had a full spread "family tree" depicting the local bands at that time, and showed how many guys played in a few bands..sorta like how many degrees of separation.

and yeah..when Stompin Ground is playing and those watching are sittin down...*shakes head*

aiyoh edder, i wasn't trying to paint any nice pictures la. its just that i really do not remember any fights. or is my memory failing me? or was i in the wrong year? hahahahhahha!

the gigs during 90-92 was really clean loving fun as far as i can remember. 92-94, i was out of touch a bit as those were NS years. but 94-95 was clean too! remembered there were a few gigs at Singapore Poly and Ngee Ann Poly, and no fights too. and there really were no real skinheads then. those with cropped head were usually "staightedge Ian MacKaye or Ray Cappo wannabe types". its true that not all fans of diff genres mix and dance together all the time. but generally, nearly everyone is at everyone's gigs. thanx to the diverse mix of music in gigs too.

i feel the ban on slamdancing is largely due to the front page coverage of the Rollins Band gig. i was shocked and awed when i saw the papers in camp. bloody hell, they have to come during my NS! the govt being very efficient, have to take action over calls by concerned citizens/parents. (as if their kids or they themselves are going to be at one of those gigs!) and the ban was put into place! but i'm curious, when was it lifted actually? hmmmmmm...

ehhh, but i think banning was not such a bad idea after all. even Fugazi don't want that in their gig. they prefer the audience to stand still (well, not like a rock!) and LISTEN!

anw, like u said... on with the program...
