some of the best HOMEGROWN BANDS in Big O's New School Rock

We is very old indeed...

I've been spinning some of these CDs for the Monday Sessions. It was nice when people came up to ask me, "This sounds extremely familiar..." And I can say with a huge-ass smile, "Stoned Revival's 'Goodil'".

VOodooMirrors!! :D .

Haha! Yeah Livideye... Got to know VoodooMirrors after he plugged his band on irc. I even jammed with VoodooMirrors in their very last 2 practices! Hahaha... The remaining members went on to form the now Kate Of Kale.

Altho' there wasn't such thing as mp3 back then but I remember substitute.com (<correct?) and audioload.com were hosting some real media files that can be streamed via their websites. And Livideye did sent me quite a few .rm and .wav files of local music back then!

gigged with VoodooMirrors for one time with my then rapcore band Operation 2:13 at the then Roomful of Blues at Macpherson..first time got to know livideye..

2 years down the road...he's in my BMT company. lol. i remember it was at the training shed that the both of us found that out.

hahahahhahha! i didn't know this thread is going to be "active" after the ban on the mp3 thingy! thot it was dead! hehehehehehh...

reyar, its interesting to read abt ur teacher slipping u discs and Big O mags. and CHINESE language teacher lagi! hahahahahah... especially when he is listening to ur stuff now! its kind of like full circle! i guess it seems like u r "giving" back to the "community" or something... hehehehehhhe...

i wonder if more will post CD pics/covers or something here as some of us might have missed some "Local Gems" here and there and would try to stock-up our CD crates with them. it would be really great... i've lost most of my stuff when i shifted to too many places!

another great CD released in 1996 - Flush After Use. IMHO, this is one of the best Local Bands compilation cd i own.

The Mother's The Girl That I Once Knew has to be one of my all time favorite song. A good collection of local songs but what a horrible cd cover and title for a compilation. :D

heheheheehhh... i was wondering abt the title too.

is it becoz of some Singaporeans' penchant for not flushing after using the toilet? or becoz of Singaporeans' idea of "Locally Made/Produced Music" being "dispensable/unimportant/inferior" to Popular Foreign Music? hmmmmmm...

either way, its a Great CD.

anyone here love Sweet Charity??? raise ur hands!!! hehhhhhhhh...
this is a local Rock Band. one of the pioneers (if not the pioneer!). they were (and still is) HUGE in singapore and malaysia too!

ok, they're a Malay Rock Band (Mat Rock brader...) fronted by Ramli Sarip. this is a live album recorded in KL National Stadium in 1996. full of tasty guitars, and Ramli Sarip's throaty vocals. and of course the great music, the great lyrics, and the great songs! (jangan tunggu lama-lama...) i'm listening to it now!!! best! this is a reunion concert (they disbanded in late70's or early80's when Ramli Sarip go solo). i remembered watching them in another Reunion Concert in WTC in the 80's. their cover of Deep Purple makes the hair on my hands and back of my neck stand-up man!

heheheehhhe... its "Humpback Oaks" and "Observatory". hehehehhhe...
no, actually only Leslie is from the band (correct me if i'm wrong!), the rest are from other bands also... Dharma is the frontman/guitarist maestro of "Throb".
how about Viven Wang ?
she's a HOT BABE ?
is she married ?

Sweet Charity and Heritage did have a gig at the Victoria Memorial hall theater in either 1979 or 1980 , It was one real hard rocking gig as the sound aqoustic there is very very good. I have yet to see any rock band play at the old vic so far.

cheers

Some short notes :

one of our band songs then called THE
RESURRECTION back in '99 when our band were still
around. there was a lot of talk about the coming of
Christ and all that soothsayer talk then about the
coming millenium so i was quite inspired to write a
song about all that. my lead was playing around with
a riff and instrumental back then so i tot i could
write something around it. sat down one afternoon and
wrote the lyrics to this soon after....

LYRICS :

The Resurrection - Overture

Don't you think the sky is telling a story
One that makes you cry, one that makes you happy
We wait a thousand years just for today
The day you will by judged and i pray it's ok

Stop telling lies cos they tell none
Go on tell your friends the one's coming
Close your eyes, shut the doors
Brace yourself for the Resurrection...

In the dead of the night and you woke up
You're drenched in cold sweat
and your heart's pounding fast
Ask your heart what have you done lately
Or have your sins caught up
but you're blinded completely

Stop telling lies cos they tell none
Go on tell your friends the one's coming
Close your eyes, shut the doors
Brace yourself for the Resurrection...

And when everythings gone will we still be here?
To live the human spirit that we hold so dear
Times when you feel lost and running out of time
Rest assured, love will keep us alive

Your frank comments appreciated! u can still find my good bassist MERVYN who is playing bass in a pub band now..called ALTEREGO...havent got the time to see him yet but try to...if u reading this MERVYN...all the best.go support him ok....as for me..am pretty much retired just playing bedroom music..haha..cheers everyone, apologies for writing soooo longgg =) CHEeRs

Ehh bro, talking behind my back ahh. Anyway my apologies that me and shaun did not turn up at for your gig at the Esplanade. Man i still remembered that real media back then was the in-thing. the files are so small and so easy to convert. And of coz the webside audiotrip.com haha, and the xzrock show on 91.3fm with Maddy as the host. So happy that Voodoo Mirrors music was played on air then. hahaha. Those were the days.

Thanks Echoist, for bring back those wonderful memories.Alot of stuff here that I seen , I thought that I won't be able to see again in my this life.I will treasure that as the most wonderful and important part of my life.I miss each and everyone of them from those days. Wondering where are all of them and what are all of them doing right now.

hahahahahhhahhaha! hey, encik! hahahahahahh...

nice to have u post in this thread!!! i can't help it but u sounded kind of sad. heheheehheh... maybe just my imagination! n i remembered lots of ppl didn't believe that Nirvana was in spore but couldn't perform becoz of certain reasons. (i dunno what it is!) i read he jammed somewhere, must be at ur place then... hahahahahah...

i believe that period late80's-early90's was one of the best period for spore indie/underground scene. especially with subtation having the annual new year eve/new year celebration with bands/movies/art performances. and i remember clearly ppl slamdancing in the rain there! hahahahahh... now, everyone will run into the shade! and spiky haired punk/gorilla biscuit loving skatebrders/indie kids/grindcore and thrashers all dancing/pogoing together helping each other out in case anyone falls... those were the lovely days... that's why i tried to have this thread here. well thanks to u too, those are all possible.

Stompin' Ground - we set the pace EP

nyhardcorecd.jpg

NYHC (New York City Hardcore) bands gorilla biscuits, youth of today, burn

this is the 2nd time i post shots of this EP coz i feel its one heck of a GREAT EP! of course the band is greatly influenced by NYHC bands (gorilla biscuits, judge. etc.) but this is one great cd all the same! its singapore music... this EP featured the original Stompin' Ground line-up. one of the best local hardcore bands (dubbed LCHC - Lion City Hardcore). bursting with energy and all-out acrobatics on stage.

they were a regular headlining band for most of the local gigs then. i can clearly remember when they performed at a Chinese Clan Institute Hall. the place have a whole wall lined-up with headshot pics of all the clan members! how the heck they got the place i dunno! sadly, i missed both their performances when they opened for Rollins Band and Fugazi bcoz of NS. but saw them opened for Fugazi the 2nd time at Fire Disco (hahahaahhha! can u believe that???) but then, hafiz was not with them and the dynamics of the band kind of changed. (no disrespect to the current line-up coz they are great. love the fire blowing.)

now, if only i can find my "missing" Measured By The Richter Scale CD, i'll be a very, very happy man...

Whoa Bro, this is awesome. Real Ol' SKOOL stuff......
Those were the days when the scene really hv a good time. No politics, No Prejudice kinda scene....
days when i use to listen to SICK OF IT ALL, Shelter, Gorilla Biscuit, BioHazard, United Blood, Rollins band, Fugazi ( e band that did a free gig at Bukit Batok... n serius it really happens) Voiceout, etc's, RATM n many more.........

swd

And in those days, TNT Studio, Ah Boy, was the only one the really supported the scene all out and at any cost.

Salute u AhBoy..... :partyman: :prayer: :prayer: :smt035 :smt035
