i salute these local bands...

I am a old dude here, I grew up with this local 70's band and below is the 3 bands I like

Western Union Band
Heritage
Sweet Charity

They used to have rock gigs every month at the old National Theather at Fort Canning, it was always full turn out every gig , which is about 5000 rockers . The Rock gigs were stop when the back fence on top the slope of the theather collaspe due to people who cannot get tickets and was sitting on the fence to watch . That was the most happenning era of local rock music , long hair, grass, rock chicks

cheers

Strange!!! I can see from these list, nobody seemed to be aware or cared too much about bands that actually had lots of airplay and had won awards....I see mostly(I have to emphasize again; "Mostly") "underground" bands mentioned here?

Hmmm...which brings me to think; If Singapore's music scene, generally speaking, has always been trying to steer clear from recognizing "Pop" or "Commercial" bands....Hmmm?
its not a matter of being Pop, Commercial or Big that counts them as great bands/musicians. its the music they play. can it touch the audience/listener deeply enough?

i guess everyone knows Taufiq. but i must say most of the ppl here (namely musicians) will smirk at the mention of him being a great musician. anyway i believe he is, i've seen him singing an old Malay song, in his trademark style, and its beautiful...

Talking about Taufiq, does anyone knows that Slyvester used to sing in a J-Rock band? Apparently he dump his band after he won the S.Idol award...
I dunno how accurate is this but I was surprised that he wasn't just a singer from some KTV pub coming to try outs but had some gigging exprerience previously too. :)

I am a old dude here,
Heritage is still around, but with a new drummer now. n Sweet Charity... Ramli Sarip! Rosli is still playing in a pub somewhere.

there used to be a pub called Woodstock at far east plaza, but i was too young till they folded. hmmmmmm... i heard that was rocker's hangout too...

singapore have our own Jimi Hendrix, i can't remember his name. he opened for deep purple at the National Stadium... that was way when ritchie blackmore was still with the band.

Concave Scream -Sean's vocal is so soothing that I think its' a biggest mistake that Perfect 10 dont' play their music! They are truely one hella good tight band back in those days... Anyone knows if they are still playing?

Hey, Hellcat, you just missed their last show of the year (or so they tell me...) at Bar None on Mon. Great stuff! One of their new songs, 'Rain' is damn killer!!!

His name is Ray Anthony, Singapore Jimi Hendrix and yes woodstock was a rocker's hangout, any way music used to be much simpler in the 70's and 80's as there is just rock music. Now there is too many mini sub category of 1 main genre of music and younger musician will stand by their sub genre of music to their last dying breath

cheers to all the local music hero then and now

Talking about Taufiq,

Hey doode,

The MediaCorp contract stipulated that the finalist were contractually bound to the station. You can't perform with any external groups. Taufik left Bonfide Vintage Flav'r, his hip-hop RnB collective and Daphne Khoo left All Countries as well.

Well, greener pastures, I guess...

That reminds me, there's another band 'Daze'.. anyone remember that? :D

Daze was the one that sang Sexy Little Boy right?

I love concave scream, opposition party, naked, boredphucks (now known as the suns), tri-ryche, the padres.

Just got the promo copy for the SunS' 2nd EP. It's pretty killer. Love a couple of tracks here and there. They are shopping for a distribution deal both here and in Australia.

Hopefully, they will return next year to play in da Singapura!

.

Ray Anthony - major attitude...used to alternate sets with hime B$ at Woodstock...

Few months back he came by Blues Tavern where I was playing with my band SHYYNE and borrow my guitar - was damm ruff wt it. I control temper doe nearly want to swing hime there & there..then later he ask can janm again (he ask through his guest drummer - he paiseh ask me directly) I tell him no he cant accept... then mabuk...coz ruckus in the club alll the musos there alos paiseh...

Gurantee u I will nvr allow him to touch my guitar ever again...

He is now based in Taiwan.

Sad but aloota of "old tymer" musicains I knew b4 - some got MAJOR attitude problem....

If any of the old dude here remember, Edgar's Fauth song had lots of airplay on987 when it came out . It was on par with any US rock band but I think the drummer passed away and their singer went back to Canada

There was also New School rock gig by Big O magazine and the turn out was very good too , tickets was $5 and there were freebies along too . the gig was on a sat afternoon from 2 to 5 pm but it was short lived as some concern parent accompany their kids to a Roling band gig and saw people stage dive and wrote on the straight time forum .

From then on , a bond of $5000 was imposed on any local or foreign gig to ensure no stage dive or anyaccident happening so there was nothing much happening till the WTC gig . Just some little facts about the singapore rock scene from an old dude

cheers

yes, when the rollins band was here too, the new paper put out a front page story about the gig with pics of stage diving/slamdancing. the government put a ban on slamdancing/pogoing then...

gosh, i remembered that picture on the cover of the new paper.

edgar's fault was good..i remember being upset when they disappeared from the scene..i heard about them going to canada or something as well but not quite sure wat the real deal was..

oh well..it was good while it lasted..
