i salute these local bands...

BIG-O bands...?

eh how about the Big O bands...SHADES, Fish On Friday, AWOL & Oddfellows?

AWOL is well... ahem, AWOL but I heard they are still playing for fun or issit The Lizard's Convention? Hmmm...

The Oddfellows is pretty much defunct. Drummer Johnny is now based in Taiwan and the bassist (I can't rem his name) is married with 2 kids. Patrick heads Music For Good and plays in TypeWriter and a few other bands. Kelvin just released 4 albums simultaneously (yet again) and plays with Pat in Prana vs. r-H. They are still pretty active in playing.

these ppl should be in my list too:

-Roxy (one of the cd shops that really champion local bands and hard-to-find stuff)
-Da Da Records (another great cd shop of heyday...)
-Big-O magazine (remember the new school rock series??? they're exclusively online now)

Enhorted (Awesome musicians)
Fenrir (Awesome musicians)
B-Quartet (Awesome musicians, great showmanship and humble)
Dead Eternity (Great songs, great guitarist)
Bloodstone (Great songs,great players)
Jackalhyde (Great songs, hardworking bassist)
Suicidal (Hardworking vocalist who never gives up)
Paul Danial (Awesome musician, humble)

Who else am I forgetting??

Deathsynth..ahhhhhh. (Awesome tv games, great dancers, a vocalist who nvr gives up clowning, & a guitarist who nvr gives up being humble)

$uicide $olution...
Dancing Nancies...
Zhen...
Feizfonik...
Ossuarry...
Zeotz...
Ursula Bites...
Ministry of Rock...

This topic brings good memories!!

Here's my list! :P

a) Opposition Party (In terms of outfit, experience, attitute and music wise, I can't find a second to it! )

Fav Songs: Baka Utah, Impending Death, Chaos and Carry On Punk ('Laughin Nose' Cover SOng)

b) Stompin Ground (Hafiz is still my number 1 choice for the lead vox and Syed for the Backups! Remember the cover 'Betray'?? Best local cover I've come across! Man! I'm excited jus thinking about it!!)

Fav Songs:Generator and Betray ('Minor Threat' Cover song)

c) Swirling Madness (Do you guys still remember them? Ray Aziz's first band!! I only remembered him and sexy Keiji the guitarist in a show down in WTC Amphitheater back in the 90s.. good breeze good hardcore music!! )

Fav Song: We Are What We Are

d)Padres (Joe Ng should really restart this band! One of the early acts that went to tour Taiwan!! Amazing!Reminds me so much of U2!! :D )

Fav Song: Radio Station, Night

e) The Oddfellows (This is like my childhood favourite! My first exposure to local music! I still remember I get to listen to them on 98.7FM in a super routine playlist! I still have their cassette tapes. heheheh Patrick is ever so young!!!!)

Fav Song: SO HAPPY!!!!!!!!!!, Caroline

f) Edgars' Fault ( Sad to say, I never have a chance to own their tapes back then but I've seen them perform once on TV .. can't remember the title but i think it was called 'Dead Roses'. If you guys knows John Chee from Crazy Elephant Pub, well, from what I know, he was the founder member of E.Fault. :P )

Fav Song: Dead Roses (I think.)

f)PyschoSonique (One of Ginnette [Astreal] first band if I'm not wrong. She wasn't the lead vox then though but nevertheless they are one of the greatest all girl band I've witness here! )

Fav Song: I don Give A Damn

g)Bushman (My Number One choice for Singapore Reggae Music!!! For a while, they were seen too much at too many places! Now, sad to say.. things aren't the same... Syed (Ex Stompin) did hell lot more then back in stompin ground days for him and I really have to admit that his vocal power is so distinctive!! It's a shame that he left Bushman now... :( )

Fav Song: Friends, Babylon Town and ALL MARLEY COVERS (Only home-band that gives me the real Marley feel of all Times!!)

These are some old time bands that I saw them on shows which I feel that I should credit eventhough I'm not a huge fan of them., simply because they still built the good childhood days of my first exposure to Singapore Local Music Scene:

a) A.W.O.L - Anyone who seen them played in Substation and stuff knows what Les Paul the guitarist was playing?? Damn super vintage with a bigsby!! Can never forget that guitar!!!

b) Concave Scream -Sean's vocal is so soothing that I think its' a biggest mistake that Perfect 10 dont' play their music! They are truely one hella good tight band back in those days... Anyone knows if they are still playing?

c) Shades -They are often seen as opening bands in various gigs back in the 90s and impatient audience tends to boo them and stuff. However, this band is one of the early 'local blues band' that plays technically good music. Only setback was the stage presence that failed them. Nevertheless, I wanna salute to SHADES and it's good line of Blues Music! :)

d) Silent Sorrow -Danny (Ex-OP) and Pann (Concave Scream) were one tight death metal band back in the mid 90s which was rather rare and they really inspired me to dig more into Mobid Angel and Napalm Death etc with their brand of music... It was a sad case of disfunct now.. Danny! If you are reading this, Get the band back!!!!

f)Four Sides - I once saw them in a show outside Zouk and I mus say Hussain is still the good crazy vocals in the band that reminds me of Henry Rollins! In Fact, I think he got much more energy then rollins! This is also Suhaimi [Stompin Ground]'s second band. Salute the hardcore with Four SIdes!!!!!!! yay!Not to forget Ah Boon [bassist] signature of samasalting with his bassa nd rolling round the floor!! Superb Presentation!

Ops! Lunch Time over! heheheh.. will come back to this topic again. :)

While not really 'in' with the alternative scene, the Raindogs are kinda cool :D
I like their brand of bluesy, funky stuff.
Heard they might be doing an EP soon.

local acts?

Raindogs - good stuff...bassists is a killer...but he is just sessioning for them...he's actually the bassist for SBOTB finalist SYNE OF TYME

Shades - i know them intimately...not what U classify as a Blues band...except for the blues hit the 5Cs .. more of a good tyme rock & roll / pop rock band... which ultimately didnt go well when opening various acts like that included stomping ground or other hardcore acts....but then again these kinda acts would not have suited the numerous corporate gigs / shows that Shades performed at...

AWOL - dat old guitar was a Hofner with a dean markley accoustic pick up.

Joe Ng & Corporate toil - great stuff from a really nice guy

Yeah the 90s were rocking man...

Fav Song: SO HAPPY!!!!!!!!!!, Caroline
hehehehhhe... anyone remember the lyrics??? the chorus goes like this:
caroline is an ***hole......
really, i kid you not!!!

Edgars' Fault
yeah! they were like the a cross of Led Zep+GnR

Padres (Joe Ng should really restart this band! One of the early acts that went to tour Taiwan!! Amazing!Reminds me so much of U2!!
the late Sir John Peel played their song on BBC rite?

hahahah. ya man. I still remember back in those days, such words are considered rather "Daring" and I thought it was so cool when Oddfellows said that on their last song (i think..) I think i was about 15 or 16 back then.. hehehe.. i was abit country bumpkin lar.. :P

Wow! Really?? Man! All these years I keep thinking it was a Gibson! hahah.. man, been sourcing the wrong directions all these while! hahha..

But I can't remember how well that guitar sounded except for it's cool and unusual look of it. Do you happen to know the guitarist name? Is he still in the music scene in any ways?
