How come Olinda Cho only seems to do covers?

I was @ VivoCity just yesterday, and surprise surprise, Taufik and Olinda were making an appearence @ StarHub's Double-Hub-iness stage and exhibit.

Apparently some StarHub thing where 5 songs from each artiste is made available for download... Taufik had a few originals in that batch... but Olinda only had covers.

Now, Olinda has the better voice IMO... Taufik's vocals can't match Olinda's and she just sounds better overall... Taufik has great charisma though and yes, loads of girls screaming for him. While Olinda... despite a terrific slimming program (it scary works!) doesn't seem to appeal to the guys lah.

That said, WHY?!

Why doesn't Olinda do any originals? She got some great vocals in her...

Where else, taufik has a mediocre voice and his originals sound like any other of the 100000000 pop songs out there.

I hope the answer isn't a simple - T brings in the $ but O doesn't kind of thing - just wondering if there is more to that... the subtilities of it all...

I'm not surprised. After all, they have been doing covers all along.
Maybe she doesn't have the luxury of working with songwriters or her contract limits her.
It's safer doing covers when the audience has heard the piece before.
If she had an album where she sang her own songs, than she would have sung them already.

She covers a lot of the oldies.... those oldie but goldie kind. Probably to stay safe as you mention.

She did claim to do them her own way, which I was pleasantly surprised! She actually, or the producers, tried to create some originality in a cover... and I thought she did it quite nicely - she has quite a unique vocal tone. (yes yes, guitarist speak)

My guess is that she may not have the luck of having good song writers to write songs just for her. Also, she may not have the talent to write her own songs. It takes a lot of elements for an artist to release his/her albums/singles containing all originals.

Remember SI Winner => the one with the highest vote?

All resources (recording companies, producers, song writers, etc) will naturally be yielded towards the winner. Then, they cut the CD, then, there's a good chance that the voters who caused the highest vote will once again bring about good album sale results... But i don't think it is developing in such a logical manner.

u dont need to know how to write songs to have ya own album ;D. u just need da cash to pay songwriters n arrangers to do their jobs :D.

Taufik has a mediocre voice?

In a country where some of the most well known bands and musicians (Douglas O, Jive Talkin, Unxpected for example) are just glorified bar bands/musicians, selling their souls for a paycheck, why would it surprise you that someone who is best known for her slimming campaigns sings a few covers in the name of being a corporate whore?

There is no such thing as the starving artist in Singapore and culture dictates that unless we get $$$ for it then why would we do it. Although it was factually incorrect, Lisa Walsh wrote an article about this same thing in the Today paper last week. Singaporean musicians who are good enough to play anywhere in the world would rather make a dollar at Harrys/Bar None/Wala etc than take the risk of trying to make it. It's safe and it pays the bills and allows us to maintain the career our parents so badly wanted for us.

And let's be honest here, Taufik didn't write any of the songs he was performing either....and on the off chance that he actually did have a hand in the writing process then it was composition by numbers, take a pop song template then change the melody and write some words.....it's called original music but is it really?

Taufik has a mediocre voice?

Yes, he does have a mediocre voice. Or depending on how you view it, above average at best?

Olinda's pitching was spot on and she had powerful vocals... she knows how to work her vocals and hit all the high notes. Taufik sounds like.. a member of a boyband kind of vocals? (Disclaimer: Boyz II Men NOT boyband) And he strains to hit his high notes...

Interesting... actually, how is "songwriting" done in the context of a pop artiste? Or any commercial artiste for that matter?

well, I realise that Taufik is improving over the years...his voice isn't that mediocre anymore..

well, probably coz Olinda is a good singer who doesnt hav the creativity to write songs that pleases her...well,this kinda thing happens...she may write in future, who knows...

hmm olinda can sing.. but i really really doubt she needs the dough. taufiq needs to produce albums etc to keep his career afloat... olinda is actually filthy rich. dun work also can.

Olinda doesn't have a unique voice. In the commerical world, my opinion is that that can carry more weightage than the quality of your singing.

Or to phrase it another way, would many people buy XXX's record if she sounds like a Mariah Carey/Celine Dion/[Insert great singer here] clone?

in the heavily commercialized end, i don't think your voice even really matters all that much, at the end of the day it's almost all about image and marketing. Paris Hilton and Lindsay Lohan's albums are still flying off the shelves.
