How come Olinda Cho only seems to do covers?

Shredcow

You buy songs from professional songwriting teams, eg. Avril Lavigne from the Matrix.

'Complicated' was fully written before she came in. She heard and liked the song. The record company said it was fine. She sang over their production (minus 1 from the demo singer which was probably better but not as cute... ooohhh, Avril) and changed a line or two. And got a songwriting credit for that!

Yes, she's a singer-songwriter too!!!

bro aging youth bro... alanis morissete leh? she also got collaborator leh... is she fo real?

As far as I know, Olinda has her own albums, there is her own originals in it.
Don't blame the Recording Label or etc. Ask Starhub, they were the ones who wants to put the song in the promotion.

Taufik is the winner so, they cant expect him to sing other people's cover for his second album. Taufik is so called representing singapore music. Olinda in the other hand, shes the second runner up. Can't do much either.

darn, I hate reality competition shows. Totally eating viewer's money. ...

sigh...

Then theres this DanceFloor.

Anyone here a fan of taufik? or Olinda? or even PAUL!??? omg... LOL..

*nothing to say*

ShredCow: Yes, he does have a mediocre voice. Or depending on how you view it, above average at best?

Well, One man poison is another man meat. One man terrorist is another man freedom fighter.

I think its up to individual, im not a fan of Taufik, but personally i think that Taufik has his voice of his own, if you hear his latest hits, he change alot and improves alot. Same goes to Hady, he has his voice of his own.

What we should think about is that its not about Taufik has a mediore voice or whatever, but why Olinda Choo cant be as succesfull as Taufik.

Olinda doesn't have a unique voice. In the commerical world, my opinion is that that can carry more weightage than the quality of your singing.

Or to phrase it another way, would many people buy XXX's record if she sounds like a Mariah Carey/Celine Dion/[Insert great singer here] clone?

Thor, on hindsight, I agree with you.

Olinda sounded "unique" because her pitch only affords a lower range, slighly uncommon for girls... i shouldn't have mistook that for "blatant" unique-ness. :P

And to your 2nd para, yes. The commerical world is choke full of clones... but do they make it really big? Usually not.

So there is no... regulation on what constitutes to songwriting?

Like in the case of plagarism, you take x% then considered you've plagarised....

Just take a line or two, mod/zhng it and you are a songwriter liao?

I guess, the marketing department wanted to market her as a teenage angst girl who writes songs as well mah... So of course, let her have some credit lah...

If she can write hits then there wouldn't be any reason not to release them.

doh?

going off topic.

copyrights do apply. but rights are often bought and sold in the song writing world. terms have to be properly discussed of cos.

taking a line or two and zhnging/moddin it is considered "derivative works" unless you own the song, you still can't call it your own.

But once you buy it, its yours, you can call it yours, regardless who wrote it.
A copyright holder need not transfer all rights completely, though many publishers will insist. Because the hold may sell it to another party too.

Hmmm... wouldn't it have to do with what producers (or whoever is required) are with her - like need to have a "backing"?

I see.

So to be credited with writing a song, just buy it? It will count? That simple eh....

Interesting! Something new... something new...

They can be credited as a co-songwriter on paper but it also doesn't mean Avril (hurhurhur~) Lavigne has equal share in royalties with the Matrix songwriting/ production team (their gear is damn hardcore!!!). We all don't see that contract they've. After all, it's only business. Who cares about the music anyway...?
