how bad is NS?

Doctor ! Doctor !

halo MOs,

wau lau, we hv two MOs here ah?

kind of strange to talk about NS in tis music forum,
anyway if it's not for tis website, i dun tink hv a chance
to converse wif any MO.

IMO, all MOs always tend to tink we NSmen try to 'keng'
when report sick, maybe too many ppl 'chao keng' liao
and the CO of the battalion nrmally tell the MO to restrict
on the excuses and MC, is that so ???

Songs dedicated to Doctor:
1) Doctor! Doctor! - Thompson Twins
2) The Doctor - Doobie Brothers
3) Doctor Robert - The Beatles

Have a good day !!! Any tips for us NSmen to handle our battalion MO ???

1) Honesty is the best policy. No one likes to be cheated.
(I mean we are not idiots - there are servicemen who complain that they have arm pain after a fracture and cannot carry heavy things but yet the arm size is normal - muscle wasting would be very obivous in such cases).

2) Come with medical memo/letters if available. Unless there is grave circumstances regarding the truthfulness of the letter (ie forgery), they are usually accepted.

3) The CO has NO right to tell the MO to restrict the excuses. It is based on my medical judgement and I sign for and stand by the excuses I give.

4) Spare a thought for the MO. He's easily 5 to 6 years old than the average personnel in the Battlion. (usually only the CO, Bn 2IC, S3 and RSM are older). And he has to be in FBO (because of medical equipment) ALL the time (even when the men move out in SBO). Really no better than a signaller.

5) This for Cheez - which batch are you? I'm from 40th MOCC (yes the batch with 2 minister's son and arguably the most shiong batch). Also SO (Prev Med) and MO2IC 4 SIR during active days.

Of all the medical personel...

My favourite person in the company line is still the medic though...

underappreciated and not well taken care of, but he's the first person/name you'll call when something goes wrong...then of course, he's also got the shitty job of ensuring company hygiene in the field together with the CSM and RSM...

That's right. Don't keng. We've got many tricks up our sleeves to see if it was a real case or not. Of course, there's always the danger of thinking everybody is keng - we are usually on our toes not to mistaken a geniune case as fake. Our heads will roll if such a case happens. If you're really sick, we'll understand. We're not out to give you a hard time (although I was quite notorious for that...).

Lowjk, I'm one of the unusual cases. Completed about 2 years of my NS before disrupting for med school. Then came back to complete the remaining of my 4-5 months as an MO covering everywhere around the island (and neighbouring island) - but not enough time to send me to MOCC. So I'm attached to HQMC. But I'm usually attached to Pasir Laba and Selarang. They did not call me up for 5-6 years - forgotten about me. Then they must have suddenly remembered that I'm still around - called me back for MOCC conversion. Unfortunately I was then about to leave to practice in a developing world. Since then, they have not called me at all. Must have forgotten about me again.

I must be careful about posting these things here - some guys from SAF may read it and suddenly remember me and recall me. But still, I'm hardly in Singapore. I'm sure they don't mind having one less MO...

Old days MO are tuff guys compare to MO nowsaday. Last time MO care for their men rather than now onli care for themself, cover their own backside. Met some reservist MO during army days and went ATEC with them, dam they are good, saw us carryin SAR 21, not happy, call us exchange weapon with them which is the much lighter Carbine. Wats more, carry load tat are much heavier than us, always call us to rest durin mission and they will go recon themselves. Dam enjoy going mission with them rather then the modern MO. Modern MO, carry super light load, call us do all the shit, walk without checkin if their men are left behind......sux big time :?

ya MOs nowadays very yaya and stuck up...my prv medical centre MO drove a ferrari to work everyday, and on top of that got about 4 other more expensive cars to rotate..very yaya attitude..don't like..the present one also..little bit of things only scold and think you geng..

I don't think you understand the job scope of an MO at all.
Is he there to help you carry stuff? They have responsibilities of their own.
Don't blame them for your own laziness.

hey cannot say people like that also lar... all of us in ns suffer lar... i used to always say that admin clarks so slack so lazy sorta thing.... until i was made one and found out that it ain't easy being clark either... physically not shack... mentally damn shack

Re: Doctor ! Doctor !

halo Low,

thank you again for advice lo !
how does it feels when you only earn S$12,000 in a bad month ???

cheers!

>> how does it feels when you only earn S$12,000 in a bad month ???

I would feel worried because I would not be able to save much for the month.
Something which people overlook is the more you earn, the more taxes you pay. Before I got a better tax accountant, I was paying like $3-4k in taxes alone. Factor in the housing loan, car loan and daily expenses, $12k doesn't give me much change.

Also consider:
1) I work 7 days a week, from 8 am to 11 pm every day (with a 3hour break at 4pm)
2) I get no leave.
3) I get no bonus.
4) Popular plastic surgeons make that kind of money in 2 to 3 days.

$12,000 a month for Eight Days A Week

hi Dr. Low,

Song dedicated to you: The Beatles - Eight Days A Week !
You work Eight Days A Week and hard for the money !!!

IMO, seems like you are enjoying life leh, posting msg quite often here.
Some words from me:
1)how many ppl earn your kind of money?
2)leave - up to you give yourself a self aprroval leave. at least not
subjected to approval !?
3)bonus - it's incl. in your monthly profits
4)are you a plastic surgeon? maybe you shld spend less time in MIDI gear
and more time in your trade, then your can earn this kind of money in 1 - 2 days. And we shall lose a good adviser here !!!

haha! tatz my opinion. Cheers!

Haha, ya they can take it. Ten years down the road still go Army Half Marathon without fail. Recce is becoz they garang, this we can do nothing, tell them cannot, they tekang us big time....haha. Irresponsible is not a nice word to describe them though....maybe over responsible.....hmm

My load is heavier than him though and its not mi tat call him to carry for mi....I meant in terms of character wise difference of the MO then and now....maybe not all....but majority....
Think there is some misunderstanding, anw cheers!! :D

I get your point. But I don't think it serves any purpose to generalize people into 'good characters' and 'bad characters'. Every batch will have its good ones and bad ones.
I think you were just unlucky to encounter the less helpful ones the last few times.

Being "Garang" is the most irresponsible thing to do in the army man... it's like calling your platoon to directly front assault an mg position in an open field! Very garang...also very foolish!

Your MO definitely a nice guy lah...now peace "training" still ok... if doing OPs, should tekkan such irresponsible MOs, need to tell them off!

any SAF officers here?

i have a questions concerning NS differment when one enters a polytechnic or private tertiary institution....

i've heard dat if u enter poly , u will automatic get differment from NS until u complete ur diploma but this exact same terms and conditions does not extend to private tertiary institutions such as NAFA and La Salle SIA...

IS THIS TRUE????

or do i have to go all the way to MINDEF and apply for differment praying to God that they will accept my differment cause they need a very very very good reason....
