guitar pedal collectors ( some DS-1 content )

OMG WHY  ?? that is what makes your DS-1 unique man. hahahaha it pains my heart as a collector :P

But I wanna use it... :)

Prob after my blackstone... before the Skreddy Screwdriver. Yeap.

See how la. Got the Skreddy after sending the DS1 to Randolf, so when it comes back, the Skreddy might just make it homeless.

I'll give it away if I don't find a use for it, or need to store it somewhere.

saw this Rocktek pedal while searching yahoo auctions. just wondering. does this pedal belong to the same era as yours? I've totally no idea about them. $10 for a pedal, its probably a steal hahaha.

Hmmm...not too sure about that bro. I think Rocktek is under SnarlingDogs now. $10 only?! I thought mine would fetch at least 10,000Rupiah :D

I must say that I'm a very fortunate individual as I've managed to get my hands on so many old DS-1s. the best part is, I could run tests between all of them.

I've recently purchased a MIJ DS-1. I was disappointed when I opened it up. it has the same PCB as the early MIT DS-1 that I used to have. to think I sold it for $75sgd when I bought the MIJ DS-1 for $180sgd. thats like friggin less than half the price for the exact same thing!

%#&#!&*#%!! I shouldnt have sold it. sometimes I really think that I'm a very anal Boss Pedal collector -_-" .

early black label MIT Boss DS-1 VS late MIJ Boss DS-1. I've mentioned that the both of them have subtle differences. I dont think that many people bought my story. this time, I have prove  .

not all MIT Boss DS-1s are crap. thats a very stereotypical statement. the early black label MIT Boss DS-1s have exactly the same PCB as the late MIJ Boss DS-1.

test subjects are:

- produced in September 1986 MIJ Boss DS-1
- produced in October 1993 MIT Boss DS-1

both of them are using the (ET-28F) PCB.

I wouldnt compare my produced November 1979 MIJ Boss DS-1 as it is using a different board (ET-28C).

Japan left Taiwan right.

2291032606 for Japan & 2291032607 for Taiwan

thats like the only difference there is.

I've done A/B tests between the 2 DS-1s and my silver screw DS-1. the difference is either subtle or there is no difference at all. seriously, you can only hear a difference if you have ultra sensitive ears.

damn, if only I could buy back that DS-1. it would be perfect for modding =(.

anyway, I hope that by posting this, you guys would change your opinion about MIT pedals. not all of them are inferior to their Japan counterparts.

Thanks for sharing dude :D

no problem at all. there are many guitarists here using the DS-1 anyway :D .

the answer is simple >>> op-amp ...try switching !!

heh, that I'd leave it to the pedal modders. I dont know much about technical issues.

haha alright, so there are a few more differences :) . but just curious, do you know the reason why?

there are some differences here and there.

I remember when I was researching the DS1 there are some resistors and some caps differences.

But the one that I compared to had different IC.

End of the day, I just told myself to F it. A modded DS1 whether japan/taiwan new or old sound better modded for more bass than the original one.

I prefer the stock MIJ DS1 when used for stacking...

DS1s, IMO, best for stacking or pushing something else... like how satch/Vai uses it.

The modded DS1s didn't work for me.

The Analogman modded DS1 sounds SUBERB alone, but noisy, esp when stacked.

The MIT, forget it.

MIJ. :) Yes.

haha relinquish hope you aren't that dissapointed that the circuits are the same.. enjoy the pedal anyway! thanks for sharing too great stuff! :supz:

Yes ..the main reason i no rikes DS-1 = lack of bass !! But that can be fixed ....
....But the chip being super smooth clipping is priceless indeed :D

in lay man speak.....Older chips (badly built) seem to be weaker and thus giving that 'transparent less gain ultra smooth' feel.

All mods and clones using latter chip (improved) have incooperated this main character with all kinda tweaks to accomplish this feel.... :D

i have been blessed with a couple oL stock chips ... tried them myself!!

Seriously if u have an old pedal treasure it ...!!

i was the one who 'stole' the Black Label MIT from bro relinquish69.

It's a really great sounding one :D

the DS-1 was supposed to be a mild distortion type pedal I guess. most people combine it with other drive pedals like SD-1 or BD-2.

I guess it all boils down to personal preference in the end  .

I've heard raving reviews about the Analogman modded pedals. I really hope there is a chance for me to try one in future :D .

maybe you can ask DT to let you try the black label MIT :P .

nope no worries at all. I was very curious since I never had the chance to compare the early MIT and the late MIJ. the people from bossarea.com said they are made the same way but they didnt post any pictures which really proved their point.

so yeah, I'm happy to know the 'truth' about them. the price really doesnt do justice to the quality though =/.

Shredcow should be happy to hear that  .

anyway, I've heard that these components have a life span of 20 - 30 years. if so, wouldnt there be any replacements for them? I'm sure no one stocks that many NOS chips.

A lot of us don't know the right way to use Boss distortion/overdrive effects pedal. They are supposed to run in-line with, or "drive" a distorted amp.

I have the Boss book. It comes with a demo cd that demonstrated the before and after effect of using all boss overdrive/dist pedals. And guess what? all before-sounds show lightly-gained or mid-gained amp sound/tone.

Don't expect a MIJ to work wonder, on stand-alone mode. Whats Satriani and Vai weapons of choice? their JSX or Carvin? or their DS-1?

The DS-1 dont work wonder by itself. not even the MT-2. If not sansamp and all other tubeamp company can start packing up.

well said ripper. I believe that amps play a bigger part as compared to pedals.

that boss book looks uber tempting to me. sheesh, maybe I should head to kino and flip through it haha.
