guitar pedal collectors ( some DS-1 content )

heh, I'm one step behind you tany. our settings are pretty close eh :) .

I've recently purchased 2 MIJ boss pedals to add to my board. the price for mojo aint cheap. then again, there is no school better than the old school :P.

its basically a chorus pedal with 4 settings. all four of them sound good. if I were to describe it, its like a chorus with some added reverb.

I've done an A/B between the CE-2 and the DC-2. I prefer the CE-2 though, it has more character. some people shape the tone their DC-2 by placing a CE-2 after it. I've never tried it though, so yeah no idea. the CE-2 sounds good enough for me. it sounds thicker.

I place my DC-2 after the delay to give some sort of a "3D" effect. pretty versatile pedal I must say. it has 2 outputs. my guess is that one is stereo and one is mono. kinda reminds you of a CE-3 huh?

damn, I'm bad at describing things  .

CHEY... this is your surprise ah? looks cheesy to me.. can't tweak.. can only push.. got the extra guai lan'ness'

anyway.. thanks to you, i've got a boss pedal.. MIJ also.. just haven't really test out the potential in it... will post again tomorrow...

BF-2.. let me try it one day...

what chey  ? extra guai lan'ness' than fun what.

about the BF-2, sure I'd let you try. just find one day.

looking forward to seeing another reply from you on this thread :P

I got bored as usual.

Only the DS1 is MIJ, the other 2 are MIT. The DS1 is version 2, wish I can A/B it on the spot with ShredCow's version 1. Pedal courtesy of a fellow softie who sold it to me. Has ACA jack, silver screws, but black battery clip and back of the pedal has been replaced/sticker removed. Doesn't matter, the insides are MIJ, and it sounds good.

The DS1 works very well on a Twin Reverb at Tiet studios, decent with my amp at home. But then, I never turn my home amp up.

Wish I could too Thor.. when my DS1 comes back... lets check it out.

I got a Boss CE-2... had it rehoused, took away that irritating volume boost, added some spice. :D Its a monster of a chorus pedal now.

hey, we are using the same tuner  .

alright, ignore that little sidetrack. weird knobs on the MIJ DS-1. nice one thor :) .

however, there arnt just 2 versions of the MIJ DS-1. it has been around for more than 20 years afterall 8) .

a little history on the Boss DS-1. the first version came out in 1978. since then there have been some changes in the PCBs. ET-28E, ET-28F. I think mine is ET-28C but my memory seems to be failing me. I'll post pictures of it when I manage to find some time.

anyway, I've done a A/B test between an early MIT DS-1 and my MIJ DS-1. I did mention earlier that the difference is subtle. no point being really anal about it. I mean, both of them sound good. I'm just biased  .

well, my point is that there is a difference but it isnt enough to make you cough out a hundred bucks more.

more info on the Boss DS-1 here

That's interesting. I googled and found generally 2 versions for MIJ. Not sure if there were minor revisions in between.

I wonder what's with the mojo in the one ShredCow has (the very early version). It sounds much more 3D to my ears. But then, different equipment tested, can't be sure until A/Bed.

there is a schematic of my DS-1 on the net. the one with ET-28C printed on the board. here it is.

it would be great if you could do an A/B test. after that you can open the 2 DS-1s to check the PCB just for curiosity sake. I would post a pic of the PCB here if you want.

then again, not many people would go so far for just a simple A/B test  .

by the way thor, do you still have that website by any chance?

My DS1 is likely one of the 1st batches. The LED is momentary. :D

It only lights up when you step on it.

Cool huh.

When you turn on the CE2, there is a volume boost. My CE2 is an MIJ one, black screw.

Place your CE2 after your distortion, you should hear the volume boost.

Its so irritating to have that volume boost. So the mod took that away, I can switch to pure 80s mode, distortion into a mild chorus, with ease and without having to launch in to a solo.

The CE2 is just sweet... transparent chorus, hehe.

Spices?
2 additional chorus modes for a totaly of 3. 1 stock mode, 1 chorus/flanger kind of mode, 1 heavy chorus mode (thick).
1 switch for doubling the Rate, can get weird and sort of tremolo-ish.

Oh, its true bypass.

we have the same CE-2 I guess. I'll try to see if there is a volume boost for mine later. nice mods you've done there. its as if you've turned it into a really versatile monster. doubling the rate would really sound weird but its totally cool for experimenting. true bypass too, nice!

I wouldnt mod my pedals though. hahhaa, its a collector's thing.

Oh yeah, I got my DS1 for free.
That's why, if I wanna let it go, it goes for free too. :)

The CE2 thing, its worth it mainly due to that volume mod problem.

I have my CE2 case, you want it? :D Its in very good condition.

hahahah! that depends on how much you are selling it for. I really wouldnt mind keeping it in the CE-2 box that I have in my drawer just for display. pm me :D
