GE / Polling Day on 07-May-2011

But looking at the world now, don't you think we're in a mess... Tribes in North Africa are still fighting over villages. People in the Middle East are still fighting over land. Some organisations are regularly killing civilians in the name of whoever they call 'God'.

Sometimes, it takes a dictator to take the herd in hand. Just like a pack of wolves is always led by the Alpha male.

things are messy but we're still not in a mess yet... for now ... - but 5 years down the road, what will things be like... ?

In the previous elections the pap used the catch phrase "More good years" ...

So what is their catch phrase this GE?

A typically unsatisfied Singapore or opposition party member might say "More brood years" and might not be so far off the mark

you got internet and youtube what, hahaha! and your parents+ grandparents have more solid first hand accounts of happenings, than most softies.. lolz

Seriously, i would like to see you contesting next election 2016, for the sake of Softies.

well, one member of my band Retro Groove is a member of the opposition party (its not me though, I havent found that calling yet) .... who knows... the next GE what might happen .... we were just talking about it after our gig just now

Straits Times, 30-4-2011, Lee Kuan Yew: If they choose the opposition, then I say good luck to them. They have 5 years to ruminate & regret what they did. And I have no doubts they will regret it.

sounds threatening. there is a probability that the opposition's failure might be attributable to themselves- lack of foresight, political incapacity due to lack of experience, etc. there is also a the other probability- that the ruling party might make it difficult for the opposition should they win.

Obviously they are feeling the heat in Aljunied and there's a seriously real chance that Aljunied 2011 will be Anson of 1981 where the break through all started with JB Jeyaretnam & the workers party.

Perhaps a similar question could be directed to the people living in Hougang & Potong Pasir to see if they regret their decision ... opp have bee holding these wards for the last 20 years or so despite the pap's best efforts ...

campaign talks these days are about substance. we are engaged because we can relate to them. a stark contrast to that of the past where character demolition was the key talking point.

Do you think any of the pap candidates 'malu' and dont agree with MM Lee's threatening the voters and his other gaffes?

... and would like to jump ship? LOLz.

Thats one scenario i'd like to see

if there is any discordance, it won't be made public especially now, he he....

former Parliamentary Speaker, Tan Soo Khoon, is one character who is not entirely agreeable with his party's ideals...

So painfully obvious how the PAP ex-army guy is playing to the camera. Pretending to be chummy with the folks, cracking what is most probably tedious one-liners and then eyeing the camera to see if they caught his One Moment of Glory. I can't speak for anybody else except myself but this entire thing is so superficial and typical of the ruling party. I hope they serve better a better meal here than those at the YOG. Oh, maybe the meal here costs $1.50 if you buy in bulk, but usually it ranges from $3-5 PER meal, Vivian. And that's before you add in an egg. Like the one on your face.

I fear that if, despite all the unhappy voices and large crowds at opposition rallies, the PAP still sweeps the elections, then we are truly at their mercy thereafter. They will then know that we are just paper tigers who will succumb to their every whim and fancy.

"See? They make so much noise, but still we won. We can do anything we want."

We will be royally screwed.

I hope all those sitting-on-the-fences voters will finally wake up after what they have gone through, especially for the last 5-6 years. I'm also placing more hope on the younger voters (not the apathetic ones) as they're less likely to swallow whatever PAP or its mouthpiece media tells them.

No doubt there will be a some kiasu and kiasee voters who fear PAP and their threats. But have people actually thought of voting PAP out as Singapore's government, instead of being at their mercy and fearing "backlash" every post-election? Some people need to change their mindset that a democratically elected government of Singapore need NOT be PAP by default. And I believe a united Opposition in this current batch is capable of forming a good government.

And even if PAP wins, but is denied at least a two-third majority in parliament, PAP will most likely become less arrogant, insensitive and high-handed with its policies and treatment of its citizens. They wouldn't want to risk losing everything come next election. And maybe PAP will start to care and listen to the people for a change, and not let the people subject to their whims and fancies.

Take a look at our neighbour as an example. When Barisan Nasional (BN) was enjoying political dominance before the last election, many were self-serving politicians who were complacent as well as corrupt. But when people have had enough and many voted for the oppositions (BN lost 5 states and won only 54% of parliamentary seats), BN finally woke up and started to realise their failures. Although not much has changed since then, but there is a significant improvement in BN's attitude towards the people, mostly being less complacent and more compassionate.

Anyway, I'm optimistic this year's election will be a breakthrough for the Opposition parties.

^ Enticement, Incentive, Inducement, Bribery, Stimulus, Carrot...... anyone got a Thesaurus? :)

Anyway, who is paying for the dinner and goodies bag? LKY? Or tax-payers?

heh, we is can relax, if the money is from people like us, our tax, i have no problem of using it for food on the older folks in the name of truely concern for them and wanting to bring food to them. Whats shameless and utter disgrace is having them being used to fill up space for the pathetic turn out for their own event(if really, for the rally).

makes me wonder who are being used as tool in the process and name of sharing, when certain minister just said

http://www.straitstimes.com/GeneralElection/News/Story/STIStory_662684.html

THE Workers' Party (WP) is making use of Aljunied GRC voters by placing on them the burden of pushing the opposition cause, said Mr George Yeo on Thursday.

But it has yet to produce any plans on how it intends to improve the lives of residents, he added.

Anyway, more nonsense saying clean fight but yet saying something else some days later.

GE: Tan Jee Say saddened by SM Goh's comments
By Hoe Yeen Nie | Posted: 01 May 2011 1038 hrs
Tan Jee Say, SDP

SINGAPORE: The Singapore Democratic Party (SDP) candidate for Holland-Bukit Timah, Mr Tan Jee Say, said he is saddened by remarks made by his former boss, Senior Minister Goh Chok Tong, about him.

At a People's Action Party (PAP) rally for the Marine Parade GRC on Saturday night, Mr Goh pointed out that Mr Tan appeared to have 'benefited' from his previous appointment, and he wanted to make known why Mr Tan left the civil service.

In response, Mr Tan, who served under Mr Goh as Principal Private Secretary from 1985 to 1990, said he had already intended to leave the civil service at the end of his government bond, but was persuaded to stay on in his position.

Mr Tan told Channel NewsAsia during a Sunday morning walkabout at Empress Road market that it was never his mission in life to remain in public service and after five years, he resigned with Mr Goh's blessing.

Mr Tan recalled: "I said, okay, I can help you. But for how long? He said, three to five years. I said, well Mr Goh, you know my intention is not to stay in the civil service. If it is three to five years, if at the end of it, I want to go, will you let me go? He said, yes.

"I have given five of my best years in my career to Mr Goh, and I did not expect such comments from him. I wish he had not gone down to the personal level. I met a young lady at this market, and she said after reading this morning's report on his personal attack on me, she is more determined to vote for me."

He added that he was surprised as Mr Goh had earlier stated he would not comment on any candidate outside of Marine Parade GRC.

Mr Tan is contesting in Holland-Bukit Timah GRC on the SDP ticket.

His economic proposals have also drawn some attention. Minister Mentor Lee Kuan Yew has criticised Mr Tan's proposal to shift the Singapore economy away from manufacturing and said he was not 'qualified' to speak on manufacturing.

Mr Tan pointed to his background in economics and policymaking experience accumulated over six years at the Ministry of Trade and Industry.

"Not only am I qualified to talk about the economy, but my views have been endorsed by somebody who has presided over the transformation of a major first world economy, from a manufacturing economy to a knowledge-based economy. How more qualified can anybody be?"

Mr Tan was referring to Lord Butler, former Cabinet Secretary to three British Prime Ministers - Margaret Thatcher, John Major and Tony Blair.

Mr Tan said inefficient factories would be phased out under his plan, and added that this process was already taking place in Singapore.
