@Cavett and Dodgethis: As I've said before, it depends on the situation. I myself do own that Danelectro TOD-1 and I'm happy with it. I haven't tried a Timmy yet but I read they sound pretty similar. Can the audience tell the difference between them? Most probably not in my modern rock band's case coz the audience we play for are usually music listeners, not guitar geeks. But in my blues-rock band, since we're playing with dynamics more(soft vs. loud sections) it would be hard for me to achieve those gain-changes-thru-volume-knob moments if i'm playing Boss pedals. You see, the problems I encounter with most mass production pedals is not the sound, it's the range of the knobs.: )
With that said, if those two really sound alike even to the point of having the same range in the vol, tone, gain knobs, I think I'll still have more peace of mind if i'm gigging with the Timmy based on the specs of its parts that I've read in the internet. Logic would dictate that there's a higher percentage of more durability with better-spec'd parts and that's very important to me.
Besides, Timmy isn't the flagbearer of all boutique pedals, it's just a another variant in a dizzying array of pedals. I do like some cheap pedals(e.g. the inimatable arion sch-1) but I think it's just unfair to conclude that there is no big difference in sound in live use. There are also other factors in play when using pedals in a gig like feel and noise handling.
