Are Gig Photographers Appreciated/Necessary?

Hi.

I've heard news of bands/audiences commenting about how irritating gig photographers can be. Are they necessary or are they a sore to your eyes cause whenever you attend gigs, they would blind you with their flashes, block your view etc.

What's your view on this?

Oh, if there are bands who feel strongly against having photographers around, please put in your band name so as to notify potential photographers to refrain from shooting your set.

Please do not flame. Provide some constructive comments please.

hey what the f.uck dude!?! they are there to take pictures of your band rocking out, publicity to promote the local scene and advertisements. And you, you little prick, come out with such a thread with excuses for not wanting them to take photos of your band because they blind you with their flashes or block your view?

any bands that post their band names here ought to be shot, though i dont think anyone would.

You should be f.ucking privileged to have them take photos of your band.

KNS!

Dude chill, did you even read about what he said. He HEARD news, he didn't specifically say he was one of those who were "unhappy about people blocking view and blinding you with flashes".

these photogs are actually going out of their way to take photos of bands they probably NEVER heard of until the day of the gig..why the arrogance? they don't get paid most of the time too...dammit..

edit: I know threadstarter isn't a photog hater..

"interesting" topic. Seldom seen this kinda elsewhere...

anyway, just imho. Everyone, anyone just doing their job, either rocking on stage as band, as audience enjoying, moshing , swaying to music, as photographer taking picture. Cant there be just a lil bit of give and take?

blind one time, look away
blind 2nd time, walk away
blind 3 time, hit myself onto wall for constant concentration on flash instead of bands rocking on stage/getting lost in the higher state of consciousness when playing on stage

kena block one time, walk away
kena block 2 time, move around
kena block 3 time, cry and question why people all taller than me. Walk away in silence while pondering the mystery of life

photographers like bands and fans and promoters are the pillars of the independant music scene like it or not.

no photo = no documentation = no legacy

what irks me most is that bands who uses the photogs works WITHOUT PERMISSION and ZERO CREDITS.

at least ASK and say THANK YOU and CREDIT the source lah. And wanna credit BE CONSISTANT. Credit the source ALL THE TIME and not just one time.

As someone who's supposed to be "creative" (well you're in a band right?), there ought to be some decency and respect to other people's work.

uh, taylorboy87... dude... im lost for words here man. cuz u seriously have to at least get your facts straight if u wanna flame others. haha -__-"
...cuz grafikpunk himself is a photographer, a very fine one at that :)

i personally love gig photographers, admire the effort needed really! so no complains but only lots of love from my side! anyway, i dont see it as a problem of the photographers blocking the audience's view cuz they hardly stand in the same position in the first place.

cheers to all the local gig photographers who've helped kept the wonderful memories of the gigs in stills!

I love the photographers here. Some take photos for free. Normal charges can be super HIGH! And yet they do it for free or cheaper rate.

Totally salute them.

Love those photographers!

how would i know he's a photographer. You can't blame me for not getting my facts right as he didn't even state it as a fact that he's a photographer himsef. I don't see such use for such a thread.

To quote from edder, "photographers like bands and fans and promoters are the pillars of the independant music scene like it or not. "

So i don't think local bands are that ignorant or that spoiled and can't even tolerate a little flashes at them. To even think that the threadstarter himself would have post such a question and initiate our 'spoiled musicians' to 'complain', 'providing constructive comments'.

Are gig photographers appreciated? No.

Are they necessary? Yes.

i rather get blinded by the flashes than not having a shot of myself playing. boohoo.. im a drummer and drummers always got no nice shots wan.. lol. ok whatever. we should really credit them. no photos = bad publicity for the bands involved

taylorboy87, are ure views in any way different from what has been posted? or are u just regurgitating whatever made sense to u on the board so u wont look like a total dumbass after u misread the initial post?
and yes, we can blame u for not getting ure facts right, this thread would be relevant regardless if the person who started the post is a photographer or not, all he said was he heard and is asking for constructive criticism, not childish flamings like "KNS!"

i request that both parties be mindful of each other, think a mutual understanding would be best
the photographers, in any way possible, should maybe try to be discreet and not too in-your-face(getting in the way of the band),so to speak, there is a reason why the band, and not the crew is in the limelight after all
the persofmers on the other hand, well, just pose and all will be swell hehe, but maybe also approach the photographers at the end of the day(or vice versa) and get introduced to the photographers (they make u look good after all)

it would make the scene less of very cliqued community me thinks

are gig photographers appreciated by the band : yes
by the fans : not always (like the threadstarter said)
neccessary : yes

why do we do it? passion.
get scolded, shoved around and annoyed isnt that easy.

snap snap.

Photographers are definitely appreciated. They do a great favour to bands, because it's always awesome to have your moment on stage captured.

Taylorboy87, your responses were uncalled for and I wish you would have read properly. IMO, grafikpunk didn't necessarily need to have introduced himself as a photographer cos I think he's becoming a bit well known among us now (but whether or not he did, it's regardless). And of course he would need to broach the topic if he'd been hearing feedback like that; because it concerns him directly, being a photographer, so I presume he would have wanted to know the general consensus regarding people in his position so that we can all have a better gig experience in future.

yes, photographer just like other component of the gig, adds to the total result.

during the show, must consider if one is blocking the audience. too strong a flash is also not good for performer. worst it clicking within 1m (in your face) of subject.

most important, make your subject look like a superstar!

Hmm, I'm half awake now but I'll briefly say something.

Photographers are definately necessary. It need not be for gigs. Events need photographers. The newspaper need photographers, magazines need them and so on.

Gig photography in particular is an area not many people dabble in. There are a few things that gig photographers should keep in mind. 1 is of course to try your very best not to block anyone and if you do, keep it to a minimum time and if you can just thank the people around you.

Every gig photographer has his/her own style. Some like to flash and some don't. I for one try to shoot without flash and I can say that 98% of the time I do not use flash. There's a couple of things I call "Gig Photographer Ethics" that I try to live by and so far it's not gotten me into any trouble. :)

Mr Soft Boss has stated his views about keeping flash to a minimum and not flashing too closely. That's true too. I don't think I like to have a camera close to my face to begin with and so much more to have it flash away and blinding me.

I seriously doubt that there will be any band who do not want photos of them in action. But for clarity sake, if there are any, Please state your bandname here.

We all are here to promote the scene and want to make it a happier place/experience for everyone. No hard feelings. If you feel that the photographer is irritating you, just let him know nicely whenever you can. We all make mistakes and it's just a learning experience.

To all budding gig photographers, just continue shooting and be mindful of your surroundings. :) I call it Situation Awareness.

Okie..I seriously need sleep. To be continued..

Cheers. :)

taylorboy..

u owe grafikpunk an apology for the use of expletives.

u are one rude fella.grafikpunk did not flame any photographers at all.he juz asked for opinions and stuff like that.

but u had to go the extra mile to use expletives when it was not necessary at all.

was it compulsory for him to even say he's a photographer?NO!

you seriously sound like an immatured kid.

good day to u fella.
