I attribute our 'lack of patriotism' to the wildly varied races and different cultures, honestly.

We are all still quite different, our languages, our beliefs, our histories, our achievements, the way we look, despite calling ourselves Singaporeans.

I don't think we can run away from being the fact that we are a indeed a melting pot of different people from all over the world and no matter what we do, we still look at each other differently, as so do others who visit our lil' red dot.

Honestly, if you ask me, we will never see ourselves, whether we are Chinese, Indian, Malay or Eurasian, as one.

As always, I'd rather celebrate the differences ie. getting to eat the different types of wonderful food, date the girls from the different races, and getting chased by different dads wielding different weapons, if I am being too naughty with their daughters.

hi micheangelo, sorry if i sounded harsh and no offence at all but thanks for pointing your ideals out. But then ah, to the topic, i understand you may be venting out your frustrations through this rant of yours(initial post), and, at the end of the day, many of your ideals are similar to mine.

it boils down to this actually, a string of sentences that did not sit well with you from a total stranger.

The speak of Racism, stereotyping(ironic actually) and the fear of the degeneration of community spirit with a splash of envious patriotism here and there brought about by that singular incident is too spectacular for me to comprehend. But anyways, I respect your views and hope that you do not meet such people again.

no offence but seriously, lighten up la

Actually I've never encountered racism in Australia. Not even once. Customer service is excellent, people are excellent, people even say thanks or just raise their hands at the bus driver when they get off the bus. I think restaurant owners here are what the opposite of what you said, and do tend to favour people who speak their native language.

+100 raistmar

if with mats then relax la alamak
if with hokkien kia, then jiak zhua lo
if with tamileh, DEY THAMBI!
if with ang moh, howdy mate how's it hanging!

no big deal to me

rottenramone:

we all have the same amount of time, we just dedicate more of it to the things that we are passionate about and there's nothing wrong with that!

anyway, didn't see the stuff in the later posts, so i have this to add:

we do live in a rather unpleasant society, so it is up to us to complain less and be more proactive.
make a difference ourselves, each and every one of us.
be pleasant to other people even if they don't appreciate it.
practice what we preach to one another,
and our kids will grow up to be part of a society we can be proud of.

Isnt it the same thing as looking up to another culture and looking down at your own culture? You speak greatly of other cultures, other community and you condem your own. Isnt it a little bit oxymoronic? (No offence)

Also, about the whole accent/enunciation/slang thing, I think you're delving in a little too deep here. I think the underlying issue about this whole SPGs thing is superficiality/vanity, nothing more nothing less.

i'm with michaelangelo on this one though-

he's "looking up at other cultures and down on his own" not like an SPG would, but in a more meritocratic sense. Generally speaking, we can definitely notice that there are some very undesirable elements in our community that needs to be taken care off, and more successful examples are out there to be learnt from.

Michaelangelo does not suggest boycotting our culture to try and absorb another, which is what he's really condemning. I think he'd agree with my interpretation and personal belief that we ought to learn from others and improve ourselves instead of trying to jumping ship like how SPGs sometimes do. It's both laughable and sad, because we can almost never truly and completely get rid of our background and roots. If anybody does do it, we don't notice them- it's the half-****ed cases that are everywhere sticking out like sore thumbs.

You might argue that SPGs do somewhat have some meritocratic sense too in choosing ang moh men- they're more romantic, have bigger wallets, bigger pricks... but not always. It's up to the rest of us Singaporeans to make the Singaporean man a sexy, romantic and desirable fella! The SPG will die out on her own, then.

Generalization is generally a bad thing, regardless of the culprit.

Raistmar, was quoting the whole passage necessary? Just quote the relevant lines to which your referring to. if you wanna speak about the whole passage then type something like

"=MichaelAngelo

etcetc"

Poor James has been trying to tell us not to quote unnecessarily since forever. :)

the thing is,
quoting anirudh's signature,
"Opinions are like assholes, everyone has one."

so no matter what you think/say/do/believe,
there are always people who think similarly, are way different from you, and those who don't give a shit what others think.

it's a live and let live thing,
but ranting is not always a bad thing.

rant, get it over and done with, be happy :)

and good morning to you all.

what if she's not an SPG? what if she always speaks that way?

besides, she's not talking to you so just mind your own business. damn, singapore (and the world) would be a much better place if people stopped being so ridiculously petty and simply followed these 4 steps to achieving inner peace:

1) assume the best of people, not the worst.
2) don't judge others, you're ignorant of the circumstances and lack the moral authority.
3) mind your own damn business.
4) help those in need.

you will have more friends, be less unhappy, and generally won't WHINE SO MUCH.

i agree with the serialninja bro above! inner peace is the key, but a rant is a rant and it will feel good after u do it.

i'm also curious as to all the gender biasness? what if its a some guy talking to a angmo woman? is he a sarong wearing man? would we still be as passionate in this thread?

about "slangs" , i think everyone has their way of speech depending on their "growing" environment. I was in australia for a couple of years when I was young studying high school (and dropped out heh) and I picked up a terrible aussie accent mixed with singlish. and when I said terrible I meant , australians couldn't really catch what I was saying, and my singaporean friends couldn't understand wth I was talking about. so ya la I tried (yes tried real hard) to drop the "accent", and realised the importance of the whole singaporean campaign about "Be Understood.". who cares if you speak singlish or japanglish (HUM-berRRR-GerRRR - hamburger / vwan-tsoo-tsureee-ffoor-faivoo = 1,2,3,4,5) when you can simply understand what message they're trying to relay. i love japanglish btw. it's attractive. personally I "upgrade my english from v0.beta to v1.0" temporarily when I speak to foreigners not because I want to "poser" them, but i pity them in advance because I know I'll get what they're saying and they can't understand me.
also can't really blame ppl who grew up in other countries and moved to singapore being viewed as "slanging assholes".
michaelangelo : however I understand your point of view when I see some REALLY CMI ppl trying to "slang" or act cool with that "american english" thing, but I only appease myself by telling myself that "I'm glad i don't speak gutter like you." and sorta let it go. you're not alone bro. alot of personal issues in life i'm sure even everyone including myself would like to just display the opinions down here in the forum and get a better understanding by listening to everyone's 2cents worth. but I rather just stick to my true blue singaporean motto : "iBoChap." is the true road to happiness. lets face it, you can't find happiness anywhere in this stressssed life nowadays. not even if you got money. it's in the simple things we overlook.

99¢ worth

Then she has "yellow fever". If she is with an African guy it's "Jungle Fever". Offensive, out dated, sexist and racist all in one, much like the term SPG. It reeks of a deep seated insecurity and a pathological fear of the unknown.

plastic : oh by the way now I just scrolled through all freaking 11 pages of opinions. my sentiments quite similar with cheez's. but I just thought I'd like to highlight you're a damn lucky individual to not encounter racism in australia. maybe cos of timing I was there during pauline hanson's peak reign. in the whole school no one knew my name and didn't really cared where I was from or what my name is. I was famous for this nick : "The Asian C|_| |\| T". and pretty much in fights with 6ft+ footy jocks at least 3 times a school week.

alright sorry for the topic stray. we all NEED MORE UNDERSTANDING! heheh.

what's the problem with learning different ascent? i myself love to learn different ascent/slang when i travel to other countries.

indonesia's malay slang, taiwan's chinese slang, hongkong's canto slang, angmoh's slang, and so. its fun, no?

In malaysia, people actually give a shit about each other. On highways, when a traffic policeman is spotted with a speed detector on the road shoulder of your side of the road, motorists on the other side(oncoming traffic side) will flash their headlights at you to warn you. It speaks a lot about the community wanting to help each other. Also, you'd probably have encountered Malaysians who get SUPER defensive about their country, yet accept all the criticism about their country from their fellow countrymen. Shows that they are proud of their country despite their internal problems, and desire to project a good image of their country. Yes, its VERY IRRITATING to us when they act like that, but it does show their sense of patriotism.

ooops, we didnt know that would irritate u THAT much. :p
