Why are all of you who say radio sucks, still listening to it?

you abhor it, and you say its commercial, that it's not doing justice to indie musicians, or whatever it is about "xxx on the radio is not a reflection of the real thing.."

whatever your gripe is, why are you listening to radio and knowing what their airplay patterns are?

i'm just wondering, help me out here guys.. you might learn something in the process amidst all this whining.

hey dude,

thank God i've never flamed radio here.. :P as for me, i love radio.. yes.. even some hip hop songs occasionally.. to me its a reflection of the latest trends in music generally.
Nonetheless, the whole range of music in this world is so large and even though there are many radio channels, there is only 24 hours a day and therefore only so many songs they can play each day. So yea, it would be only practical to play songs that are more popular than not, thus leaving out much of the songs that tend to appeal to the musicians' community. I guess this is bound to happen considering it has already been widely proven if we would observe that musicians generally have a unique taste apart from the "general consumers" of music. We tend to get sick of what is common and popular faster than the non-musicians. (i sound almost elitist... but it is true.. musicians are the elite of society :D )
However, it is true that not enough efforts have been made by radio channels (except maybe power 98 doing a pretty decent job, 933 of course doing great considering our chinese music market is already pretty well established) to promote local bands. Especially considering the fact these radio channels are also the largest mediums with more often than not, the greater spending and advertising power than any indie producers and studios can ever have. Not to mention their great influence over the young little minds of today (myself being one of them :P).
So yea, I don't think radio sucks, but i can see why people do say it is.. :)

video killed the radio star.. Ok off topic.
I don't listen to radio... The only time i listen to it is when i'm in cheers or 7-11 buying stuff or any other shop.
RADIO SUCKS.

hey, it's cool if you enjoy listening to radio, and you find the music you like there. i found out early on that singapore radio wasn't playing what i wanted to hear, so i looked elsewhere, and i'm happy. -)

i'm asking a commonly used term here on soft "radio sucks", "they don't get it" "they'll never play my music." and why we still see them as the authority of getting music heard mainstream.

it's just an observation that softies who don't like radio seem to know a lot about it, hence they're listening to it? so my question is, why? what purpose does it serve apart from telling the whole community that you don't listen to radio?

wouldnt it be better to tell people where you access your alternative places of getting music that doesn't get heard on radio?

i used napster, limewire, soulseek and now torrents to download all my mp3s
Last.fm – The Social Music Revolution is probably one of the best streaming radio stations that play a lot of different music and recommends you more in the process

Well, for me, I practise selective listening.
I listen to practically all malay and eng stations with following objective:

Warna 94.2 FM - to listen to 'azan' (prayer call)
Class 95 FM - to listen to songs that I grew up listening to (teenage years)
(depeche mode, fiction factory, culture club etc)
Gold 90 FM - to llisten to songs that my late father and my early years of
growing up (tom jones, jim croche, carpentars, abba etc)
Ria 89.7 FM - to listen to Vicious Volume and Misteri Jam 12 (spooky stuff here where if you are lucky enuff you would be able to hear some ghostly voice over the air.)

To me radio not suck la.

Singapore radio doesn't suck. But it is predictable and can get mundane after a while. And the commercials do get irritating.

iTunes radio channels are da bomb.

I also only listen to radio in the car.. If only i could stream iTunes radio in my car.

What channels are good on itunes? I usually tune to Radiomaxx (under classic rock section). They play eric clapton to GnR to Alternative rock stuff and even heavy metal at times.

The Pure.FM channels are what you should tune into if you're into house, dance and the likes. Just keep surfing, you never know what you might find.

Yeah, i only listen to radio while driving. Sometimes they just repeat the songs too much

Radio is not lousy...I occasionally tune in to Gold 90 FM for the latest home n overseas news, followed by the latest football results..I love listening to the morning show, they play all those 60s-80s songs, which I really dig..so many awesome tunes to discover like for instance this week, there was this song tat I was hooked to but never heard b4..I later realized it was by the Partidge Family (Doesn`t somebody want to be wanted?), a band tat I nvr heard of, then I looked it up in Wikepedia n realized it was a 70s TV show about a band made up of a single mother n her children. I asked my mum about it yday n she recalled watching it back then :)

So u see, radio isn't that bad after all. Simple thought about radio: If u dont like it, switch it off :)

I don't listen to the radio at all. Only listen to my mp3. Unless of course someone in my house is listening to it or my car radio is on.

But on another note, I'm forced to listen to the radio then. I do not even have a slightest idea on what's the supposedly "hippiest" song right now.

Although I once heard SOAD on Ria. Haha.

exactly, that's what i think this post is about. while i can't control anybody's hatred towards radio programming, i do wonder why they have to tell the whole world..?

anyway, in the spirit of good sharing, it's a little known fact that News Radio 93.8 actually plays good indie and rare bands in the afternoons. i wished there were more like that. what i miss listening on my ipod are DJs that can entertain. podcasts solve that problem, but im not in the habit of syncing my ipod to download the shows i like yet.

I think the radio sucks.
I don't listen to it.
I know alot more people who don't.
Stop assuming, thanks.
