What's the best way to...

Describe the amp you want to buy?

Wattage? Dimensions? Weight? Specifications - speakers, ptp wiring, tube, solid state, etc? Budget? Preferences? Tonal options?

In the same vein, what about guitars? What about effects?

Just thought to start something so newbies can be clearer - judging from the slew of awkward and often inadequate request for recommendations on gear.

Looks like no one is interested to chip in...

I play pop, blues, rock, metal, ambient, grind, hardcore. What guitars/pedals/amps/cables/pickups can get me that vaidimesteentornsatchfrisellvaughn tone?

NONE!

Tone is in da fingaaaaaaa suckers!

:D

Or a sasasharsiasosrodsaa pedal will get you if you buy 2 and stack them in parallel, 43.2% / 57.8% mix.

come to think of it, if for a newbie to ask for recommendation, that prolly means they wud not have much ideas about what to ask.

And if we list down a guideline on what to ask, it doesnt solve the problem if they still dont know how and why those keywords matters. no?

Hmmm.. Something in the vein of 50W, no preferred dimensions, but as light as possible!
Speakers: If it's meant to be a fat sounding amp, then 2 12" Celestion Seventy 80s.. If it's meant to be those bright amps, then 2 10" Jensens, unsure of what model though..

Doesn't matter if it is tube or solid state, however I don't like solid states that try to sound as tubish as possible.. Like an identity crisis or something..

Budget: Unsure, when there's a will there's a way!

Preference: 3 channels? Fat cleans (NOT Fenderish or Voxish in any way), Crunchy OD (maybe customised SAHASRARAAAAA , though its a smooth OD), and a massive distortion channel, great for rhythm..
Lead just use pedals lor.. Hopefully 3-band EQ for ALL channels, no shared EQ for the drives (facing this now :???:) And maybe a front panel that lights up? Cool shiznit!

Tonal Options : As above. I like the Valve Junior cleans, Marshall crunch, and ________ (insert brand name) rhythm..

Best guitar: Anything from Caparison
Best amp: Bogner Ubershall or deth
Best pedal: Anything from mr magicboy
Best cable: Anything that costs more than USD100 per foot

Not really.

The whole point of this thread is to try to clarify that. However, looking at the responses to this thread, I think most miss the point anyway.

Another aspect I hoped to bring out was about how the newer bunch of people thinks about the way they guide newbies.

u mean, when a newbie goes in a shop and asked what type of amp does he/she want, or in soft to ask for recommendations, what is he/she supposed to answer?

i would describe it in:

budget ( err what can i get for $5000?)
watts ( 10 watts. just a small one will do)
suitable for genre ( i play metal. which one has good distortion?)
brands in mind ( would u recommend marshall? mesa? H&K?)

and....of course, he is expected to make some research too and list some shortlisted models.

like someone said, newbies wont really know some terms like
speaker brand (celestion? what the refnuitog is that???)
tube/solid state (huh? another wtf case)
and whatever else which newbies dont know (i myself is a newbie. hehe)

I think the best way to describe what kinda amp one wants to buy, tone wise, is to discribe the desired tone by listing out a few bands/artist with similar tone.

After that, there's the budget and usage, ie "gonna carry it around for gigs, I live in HDB without a lift on my level" etc

Best way though, is to research or ask around, what gear quoted artists are using in specific songs in which one is interested in, ie "what amp did John Petrucci use in Glasgow Kiss? any similar sounding amps?" This would save a ton of time trying to decide over subjective matters like "fat tone" "metal tone" "kickass tone"...

Best guitar: Anything from Caparison
