Education in most asian societies is an abject failure. I feel I am learning shit I am never going to need, and because of the fact that students are forced to cram shit into their heads, their retention is total rubbish. Also, creativity is not nurtured by having such a strictly structured syllabus, I feel education should be about making people want to learn, such as in the sudbury schools (democratic education). I find that when I ask some of my friends who came from overseas, they REALLY remember whatever they learnt years and years ago, while my locally educated counterparts and yours truly? We've forgotten everything we learnt 2 months ago. Even though Asian societies claim all the top awards in academic competition, the western societies lead in creative thinking categories. Naturally, the asian educated kids are going to end up as the subordinates in corporations set up by their more creative western counterparts. This is not because white people are more creative, but it's because asian education has failed us ALL. In creating an exam oriented system, all asian education has managed to do is to create an unthinking, uncreative bunch of mugging machines. Honestly, this horrible confucian view has to change, along with all the outdated 'asian' values we adhere to, why the hell is it that just because I am a yellow chink that I have to live under a repressive system?

Me thinks it's unfair to lump all of Asia into your analysis. The Japanese, Koreans and many others from Asia are very creative.

At issue isn't really education per se but the attitude towards conformity and how the establishment sets and enforces the rules towards conformity. Seeing that schooling forms a large part of one's growing up, where creativity is entrenched and grows, it is not uncommon to make a false inference that the educational system is at fault in dampening creativity.

Notwithstanding, the educational system here needs to be kicked in the butt, bit time!

My casual observation is that those in Singapore who are deemed creative (let's keep within the creative industries) are usually associated with the gay communities here whereas in say the US, this is not the case.

Gays, by definition, are non-conformists. Hence, their creativity is usually not affected in such a disastrous manner by our type of society. Even here at Soft, there is too much censorship, mostly unnecesary, IMHO but James' acts are merely his wishes to mirror what the establishment deems fit and proper.

Gotch make sense?
