Today's music vs songs of the late 90s

Which do you prefer?
Back then in the late 90s when it was the rise of pop music. Boybands (BSB, Boyzone, Westlife, Take That, 5) and a number of good solo artiste including Lene Marline, Brian McKnight, Bosson, Ricky Martin, LeAnn Rimes...

These days, R&B music and pop-punk rule the most air-play songs on the radio... For that, i have not been listening to the radio for 4 years. Didn't like it.

I prefer the songs back then in the late 90s... Not for the boybands, duh... but the music...

What about you?

well, abit of a sidetrack but i don't think pop music ever has a rise or fall. 'pop' stands for popular, and whatever is popular at the time is considered pop. so if in some parallel universe, death metal becomes popular, it could also be 'pop'

but i get what you mean lah. i prefer to think of it less of an actual deterioration of music, but rather something that happens in our mind, called NOSTALGIA. and sometimes we prefer music more when it's not overplayed on the radio

i haven't been listening to the radio for goodness knows how long already, so the songs i can recognise are either songs from the 90s and before, or songs that are overplayed.

i won't say that i hate current songs, as there are still nice ones, but it's an acquired taste lah. not everyone likes 90s songs too. so for me, no preference, as long as it's nice to me, i'll listen to it

Er,Whitesnake and Def Leppard were like in the 80's. DL started in the 70's if I'm not wrong.

The boyband phenomenon is from the mid-90's... according to Daddy Randy (aka bro embryo bro), a direct result of the grunge movement.

Late 90's?

The end of Brit-pop and the rise of this genre which everyone has clearly forgotten:

Rap-metal/ rap-metal

Nu-metal.

people will never stop complaining, especially about mainstream radio. back in the 90s everyone was all angsty and raging against the machine and complaining about shit on the radio too, and also said the 80s were better.
it's been pointed out - we'll always view the past with rose-colored glasses, and make them appear better than they actually are. other than boybands/girl bands, did everyone just forget about craptastic "alternative" bands like nickleback, POD, limp bizkit or god help us, Color me badd?

the 70s is an exception, of course.

I don't know why for alot of people here the 90's mainstream reflects the sheen of boybands. For me it was Gin Blossoms, Better Than Ezra, Counting Crows, Alanis Morisette, Third Eye Blind, Blues Traveler, Bearnaked Ladies, Ben Folds Five, Fountains Of Wayne, Toad The Wet Sprocket, you know? That kind of stuff. Which, I would go with, any day.

2nd. Thank you for stating exactly what I was thinking. ;)

I should add Nirvana, Alice In Chains, Placebo, Garbage, Bush, Smashing Pumpkins, Del Amitri, Tonic, Live, Pearl Jam, Jewel and Sarah McLachlan to that list.

I think there's too much hip-hop and a different genre of rock (which I can't appreciate or understand) on radio these days, so I only listen on weekends.
