TO ALL THE NEW ORGANISERS INCLUDING EXTREME MUSIC N FROPLAY.

You play on their turf, you play by their rules.
If everything is clearly stated in Black & White, are they considered cheating you?
You have the freedom to choose whether you want for play for them, no one's twisting your arm.
Even some public charities don't show you the balance card of where the money goes to. Are they obliged to do that?
If you don't like this particular brand/product it's your choice to boycott it.

they say they want to expose the bands and all but what they really wanna do is earn money. i've seen so many bands at Gashaus that are good. Then there are some that are really bad. If you remember, there was this article in LIME Magazine that talked about Gashaus. It stated something like that... "Bands can play provider they pass their auditions" and where have the auditions gone? If they let really sucky bands play, isn't it abit too much? You're embarrassing the band.

i support the audition concept!

by holding an audition for bands(except already popular ones) before letting bands play in gigs,
it would guarentee the standard of the gig at least to a certain extend.

wouldnt that also be more appealing for spectators to go down to support??

there are too many lousy standard gigs around nowadays (no offence)
i feel this is not helping the scene.

bands should practice and play music, and then be WORTHY of performing to the audience who paid their money instead of the ways things are nowadays... which is.. MAKE THE BAND GET THE CROWD..

it's so bullshit la..

if organisers truely organise gigs for the passion of music and live performances, they wouldnt use low standard bands to guarentee their profits..

these ppl just wanna MAKE MONEY

no offence to anyone..

my bottomline is:
bands and spectators should CHOOSE which gig organiser to support.

yes they want to make money. And they should restrict the smokers from smoking near the stage or something(no offence to the smokers though). The band wouldn't be able to concentrate with smoke puffing into their faces and it isn't good for the health too. The effect of secondhand smoking is even worse than smoking. Imagine if you're moshing and the idiot next to you is holding a lighted stick. Sure kena burn and it's damn pain cause i've got burnt by ciggarettes before. They should be more considerate and go somewhere else where there isn't alot of people.

My questions:

Me, being a DGO, have organised a couple of shows before. Since we DGOS are quite the scum of the earth these days, can I suggest something? Bearing in mind that we all here seem to agree on the fact that the bands, audience and DGOs have a very important part to play in the success of a show.

So, I'm gonna discuss a bit in the pre-show and after-show details.

1) If I'm going to pay a band to perform, are they not my contract workers? Think of it this way. I know most of the forum members are young teenagers. Have you held a part-time job before? If so, is punctuality a very much valued asset among your employers? Usually, that's a yes.

If your band plays in one of my shows and are late for soundchecks, is it the organiser or the band's fault? Am I permitted to deduct payment from the band because of the non-compliency of the band? If there are certain band members who did not turn up for the soundcheck, (ho ho, happens all the time), it's within our jurisdiction and very often, the venue owner's discretion to bar the band from performance at showtime.

No soundcheck, no performance.

Can I bill the band for damages? As in loss of income for us? Do we reserve the right not to even pay the act at all?

Which leads to my 2nd innocent question.

2) In the event that the band bends over and begs and apologises on the behalf of the missing band member so that the venue owner will allow them to play. The said missing guy doesn't know the correct level he should be performing at onstage. And he blows up the monitor speaker or breaks an one-month old kick drum skin (yes, this happened before to me).

Am I liable to bill the band for the damages caused? A drum skin can cause up to $200 -300+++. A monitor speaker cone have been billed at $650 before. The band can keep the damaged equipment but they gotta pay. Is it fair?

That would be my 2 innocent questions. I'd like to hear from all the performers and musicians who have expressed their views in this thread.

i rememberd last time when i had a gig for mindseye at planet paradigm , we had to go through auditions at some jamming studio at hong kong street near fourtones clark quay there before we gig. they do gave us presale tickets to sell but we still earn comission. and they take back the extra tix if we cant sell them. 10 bux at the door, 8 for presale.. and it was only 4 to 5 bands performing. now there are 10 to 12 to 15!!!

but now gigs organised are getting "rosak" (spoilt ) . organisers forcing bands to sell their presale. and i say its really expensive for 10 bux for a presale.

and it is really sad for bands that work their ass off their orignals but they dont have the wanted support from the people. and bands that play covers get better support than them.. i dont really see whats in it. which is why the country's music scene isnt progressing at all. i can treat my gig as a jamming session bcoz the people dont really care what we play. if you did went to these gigs today, they are just playing god damn bloody covers! and these bands think they are cool enough to be in a band. but its not! everybody is playing the same thing! maybe bcoz they think they think they are bcoz they have more support extra from other bands.

i dont think bands mind if they dont earn commision or they play for free. if all they want is just exposure. more and more people are following the footsteps of these people coz they just need bands who want to gig and they dont need to find bands ! now the bands find them.

CAVEvents: yes you can, yes you can, and yes it is very fair.

So it's time for us to start preparing an indemnity form eh? So many musicians and performers have spoken payola. Really interested in see what they'd say about such an agreement.

kerplunk mentioned something abt smoking..dey its a pub/cafe. so deal with it. haha.

Anyways, all i can say is, now we know organisers are like that. so b4 signing up for a gig, be tight, have one song recorded put on myspace or somethin. Spread around. Ppl like it? sign up for this kind of gig. u manage to sell off more than required to. Happy already.

Ppl dont like it(meaning no response whatsoever)? try harder

Good luck to all!

Nobody answered me on the "cheated of $20" thread when I offered people to come to my house to cheat me of $20.

Let me pose another question here.

Imagine i'm a chicken rice seller. I sell my chicken rice for $20 a plate. It tastes like any other chicken rice you can get for $2. If you come to my stall and buy my chicken rice, am I cheating you of your money?

I think written contracts will help but disgruntled people will just remain disgruntled, and as JK Rowling says, sometimes it's harder to forgive people for being right than it is to forgive them for being wrong. Even if you are upright, people will still hate you. i think you should just do what is ethically correct and as fair as possible, without leaving out an aspect of compassion for certain freak cases.

Remember in secondary school or whatever, prefects doing their job are subject to much anger and protest by the people they "book", even though they are only doing what is right. I think the best case in point would be Jesus, seriously, because you can't really accuse him of being an asshole right, but they still stuck him to a piece of wood.

So to all the organisers, if you can say with all honesty that you are not making profits by exploiting bands, then i salute you. You deserve to earn money for the work you are doing.

To all bands, read the contract terms or discuss verbally with the organiser before signing the deal, because you're supposed to know all the shit that's going to happen beforehand already.

theblueark: "Imagine i'm a chicken rice seller. I sell my chicken rice for $20 a plate. It tastes like any other chicken rice you can get for $2. If you come to my stall and buy my chicken rice, am I cheating you of your money?"

because your chicken rice taste like any other chicken rice and i paid so much for it, i wont want others to feel the disjustice i feel.

so i would go around telling people not to buy chicken rice from stalls like yours.

and people who have eaten your chicken rice who also feel the same will do the same.. they would go around complaining.

and this is singapore. it's a small place. before you know it, everyone will know.. and no one will eat at your chicken rice stall.

yay!

in other words.. these people who discourage bands to fall into such "traps" are probably in bands who have fell into it before, and they dont want others to do the same..

besides.. like you said.. there are so many other chicken rice stalls in singapore who taste the same and sell for $2.

i don't understand. this topic has been discussed to many times on here. why don't people just read the damn threads? =/

and anyway... if you don't like what the organizers are doing, don't support them. boycott them or whatever. but there's no need for you to say that they "don't know how to organize a gig" and that they should "go find another job".

we get what you're trying to say in your post, but honestly, is there a need to destroy their ricebowl? and there's no need for specifics, since most of us here know who you people are referring to.

and before you go dissing them, look at yourself in the mirror first.

wah lau... tis kind of topic damn hot la tis days...

why do ppl kip on complaining here n there... if u cant sell then dun play la. no regrets wat... can kip the $ buy chicken rice. or jam n get beta.

Wow. The short version is mate, if no one knows you, no one is gonna watch you. I don't understand how unknown bands these days expect to get paid and everything else before they are even known. I'd be so happy to be doing free gigs anywhere if it will help raise the name of my band. At the end of the day when you are recognised that's when you get invited to play better gigs. Put up with the sh*t first for crying out loud (selling tix, getting screwed whatever) - cos the reality of life is, that's how things work! You can't expect to start out at the top immediately. So chill man, if you're really about the music, just think and play for the music. Consider whatever extra you pay an investment for your music. If you are really good, your talent and band will be recognised. Word gets around.

I'm giving my album away for free here in KL. Go figure

Peace.
