The Ernie Ball Music Man Thread

Seems like Sinamex still donno know the secret to business..

It's the same response when I asked about Silos and 7 strings. "Nobody buys them..."

Eh Jim... I got an AL coming. Dunno what to expect sia... How about you tell me about what an AL is like?

The last time I checked, there's two Morse w/ FR, BFR JP, and a Luke... A few JPs an Axis are due to arrive...

I went like 1 month ago, and only the morse and the BFR were left. That's when I placed my order for the Silo Spec... Luke was gone, and I din see the Axis or JPs... But ya, got JPs arriving, and apparently the Axis is a special order for a customer.

AL..Good choice you made there. Yours a hardtail? If you set it up nicely (real low with 10s set) its gonna be pickin' and scalin' heaven man! Compact and comfortable body, smooth neck, and nice and twangy country/funk tone (Seymour Duncans) - no joke! But the output of the pickup can be a bit low it seems - low output pup mah. Use a clean boost in front of your amp, with an extra 5 - 8db, all your notes whistle and chime with glory! My favourite position - 2 & 4, together with a compressor, very good for funky rythmn work.

One concern however - though a well balance and light guitar, I found the guitar a bit too low when I sit down and play. The lower body v-cutaway, or leg rest, is a bit too deep for me (1.8m), gotta step on something to bring the guitar closer to me so I can slide my hand easily. Bear in mind this is a signature/custom model for the petite Albert, so..

Did you score a bundle with the surfer btw?

No offence to you White, but I think Simon is in the better position to judge that don't you think?
EBMM also trusts his opinion regarding the local market, at least that was what I gather when I spoke with Beth the last time...

No doubt that the Silo is a great instrument, but it's a niche model...
Not many are willing to fork out that price when they think Strats are kings...

Hopefully with yours and mine (soon! soon!) coming in... It will change their perspective...
Quite frankly, I still remembered the first time I tried a Silo, I did not like the neck profile AT ALL, I do dig the Luke and Axis neck though... Sad, but true :(
I hope to try a few around here, so I can finally put my doubts to rest...

On the Silo and AL topic...
Yeah, read some replies of Rob's, apparently he prefers the tone of the SS more than the AL, but he loves the neck on the AL more...
This kinda made me want a SS :D
Miss that SSS sound...

No, of course I defer to Simon's knowledge of his market. But I still think that more could be done for the brand than the effort he's putting in. I agree with the 7 strings comment, but then how do you explain Swee Lee's previous success with 7s? And I just don't buy the part where Silhouettes don't sell.

EBMM would trust his opinion, because they don't know better, and have no alternative.

It's difficult to judge the Silos vs Strats things, mainly because Sinamex prices the Silos higher than most strats, when they could be the same if not cheaper. But if they were cheaper than strats, and more people got a chance to try them, then I'd say the Silos would have a fighting chance...

Sorry just saw your update in the forum. Congrats to that bundle purchase Lionel!!

I'm anxious about the AL. I don't know how much I'll like it... mainly because I'm not too hot on ash bodies... and plus the fact that it's maple (which I like) but I'll be afraid to play it to get it dirty.

That 20th is gorgeous though...

Yup yup... Agree on the price issue... I think that's the main stumbling block...
If they can price it a little cheaper, I think it will appeal more to the public...
If the demand is high enough, I guess they can use bundle pricing, that can keep the price down on certain models...

The "cheapest" 7-string EBMM has is the JP7, it's like around the 3k mark, plus EBMM is a niche brand...
In a sense, the pricing strategy is towards projecting EBMM as a niche brand, and they would like to keep it that way...
Whilst Swee Lee's Ibanezs and the like have a range of 7s that can cater to most budget groups, plus the brands appeal to alot of guitarists...

The JP7 is not really accessible, and yes, I think it's niche because of the pricing... So that's probably a reason why. Not that it doesn't sell. However, I agree that the wisdom of not bringing some stock in is sound, cos it's risky. But can't they just bring ONE in?

But for Silos? You won't believe how much I got the latest 20th for! I almost died crying for joy!

Hey brother, you really believe what he says??? OMG, Do you know how much he praises the Y2D when he first got it, then complain so much that he cannot tahun it, only when he sold it away. And I never really know, forever, if he like a MM90s AL, or a SSS more. If you bother to track his posts, you will notice that for a while he like the SSS very much, then a while he would sing many many praises about the MM90s!!?? He will not tell you his verdict - bcos he is the unofficial AL endorsee! And why did he sell away he most-prized pinkburst AL? God knows why...

A final word on the AL here (being both an AL and Silo Spec owner) - the pickups are superb, you just need a clean booster to amp out the amazing tone, or get a tube amp & pump out the volume (Yup, please youtube Robs' clips, you know what I say.)

Lionel, you cant price the Silos cheaper than the strats, sorry - MOST strats I mean. And you know why I say so. A Silo on average sells at about $1150 - $1599usd. How much does a strat sell? To most pp, a strat is a strat - the body, the pup config, be it $799usd or $1499usd. What makes me buy a Silo(s) is the finish and the body design. I am willing to pay for these. For those who cant afford, the OLPs are always a starter.

I don't mean the USD price. I mean the local RSP... Swee Lee's price... Where a bloody Eric Johnson is at $4,500!!!!!

Of cos robelinda lah. Roburado is a very helpful but impartial advisor when it comes to EBMM stuffs, as well as folks like beej, candidx, to name a few.

Got to warn you first - most ALs are strung tight with 10s set so it sound punchy, aside from the ash/maple combo. But very the good for frettin' and pickin'! Maple board bo-bien one, sure have to maintain.

I use 10s anyways... 9s too soft for my liking. Might go to 11s... haven't decided yet.

Shit... I forgot to check... wat frets ah? vintage? or medium jumbos??? If vintage like the Luke, then siao liao!!!!!!:???:

Edit: *phew!* I checked... same as Silos...

Haha, cannot compare a silo with a EJ start lah brother - EJ is a signature model, must pay royalties! I think a better comparison would be the Silo against those American Deluxe series Strats or Tele man.. But who will buy these American Deluxe ones? Tah mah de everyone will go buy the cheaper ones like the American standard ones or Highway One lah, cant tell mah - long zong si strats! long zong si SSS! Somemore also got MIJ Strats. Haha. The battle is hard lah. Even Vinnie Moore also chao lor leow, he quit playin a silo..Haha.

No worry - you still got your favorite EBMM peddler Ripper here to get the Silos you like!

AL - should be medium jumbo frets. I never have enough exposure to other guitars' brands to know what type of frets, what types of neck shape. Pardon me on my lack of knowledge here bro..
