The Bassist's Effects Line Up

b33r, how's the orange amps?

haha, juz curious.

and i always wanted an auto-wah as my first pedal.
but then there's the fuzz to tempt me =[=[

haha.

i don't slap much (or well for that matter) and a compressor would be useful (or necessary) when slapping. but sometimes i hear people killing basses and amps in guitar shops because the attack of their thumb and especially their POP is SO HARD. WHY DO YOU NEED TO SLAP SO HARD? just a light touch will do, which will also aid in the speed of your slapping. but i digress

i find modulation very useful, especially when i slow the rate all the way down. it 'softens' the tone abit, makes it more spacey. pretty effective in slower/softer numbers where there actually is enough room in the mix.

oh, and the knockout is not a compressor, but an 'attack equaliser'. which literally means it changes the shape of your attack. don't ask me how, why

anyway i think i have come full circle. i messed around with effects for the longest time, experienced a few months of madness where i built up my rig, zhnged my bass abit. now it's time for.... ANOTHER BASS

slapping hard, they must have been watching flea.

Aphex Bass Xciter also shapes your attack (makes it feel compressed). Speaking of which, to those who have owned it before, don't you think the Xciter is a great pedal if it weren't so shabby and being spoilt or causing problems half the time. Or does anyone have a solution to make it a more viable piece of equipment? Ha ha

Hello all........ive always used either an Eq or Hartke Bass Attack to play. Im dabbling in more FX now.

Now i got an EQ, CHORUS, OVERDRIVE, BIG MUFF,WAH and the HARTKE.

How should i line it up?

Thank you .

i tried that.... the modulation sound buried me in the mix, can't be heard at all.

haha can't really comment much, since i always turn the volume and gain down really low. it definitely sounds better than the Behringer i used to have though.

what modulations do you recommend for bass, shinobi?

oh, i realised that my fender amp sounds damn fantastic when i turn up the volume.
but somehow i cant seem to get rid of that "pick attack" ish noise when playing.
and i'm playing using my fingers.
lol.

you either have built calluses as solid as rocks or have your action too low or just picking like john myung. which isnt that bad.

or you can just turn down some treble/tone.

or you might have a small amp speaker.

oh, actually it was my friend playing the bass.
i was damn irritated by that noise i muted the treble.
(cause we've to play she'll be loved)
but it's still there =\
haha.
but i think it sounds cool when it's used to play fast and hyped up songs.

i think it probably needs a blend... that's why i'd turn the depth down abit. the depth is kind of a dry/wet blend, but depends on the pedal lah.

i'm no expert on electronics and stuff but i believe different chorus pedals use different methods of creating the chorus effect. i've gone through the entire range of ehx chorus pedals, and they all sound different, as though each were designed from scratch. boss choruses also effect differently from other pedals.

and one other thing, the way you set up your rig is also very important. chorus work best when there are alot of highs coming through. i'm playing an alder/maple bodied jazz, tone all the way up, stainless steel rounds, and the eq on my amp is set to the "wave", which is like 1 and a quarter periods of a cosine wave - bass boost, low mid cut (low mid = mud), high mids boost, highs flat. so you get the scooped sound that still pierces through.

i dream of the analogman clone chorus

kedraiv= are you hitting the strings with your fingernails? try to train fingerstyle using only the tip of your fingers, and attack across rather than into the bass. i've heard one crude method of training finger technique, which is to turn the amp up full blast, and then practicing without blowing your amp.

but sometimes it just comes with the territory lah. if your tone is all the way up, or u got very bright strings or a bright bass, or a bright rig, no choice. then even fret noise becomes very hard to reduce

haha, yeah
i think the strings are super bright lah.

but back to the topic on bass effects,
any auto wahs to recommend?

the chorus effect totally softened up my attack so it sounded muddy :(

I also interested to try the analogman chorus, and the digitech one... teh one which has 4, 8 and 16 voices, i wonder how that sounds.

My action is pretty low and get fret noise... so normally i turn down my highs to lessen teh noise.

one way to not only reduce, but ELIMINATE fret noise - defretting

i remember a jaco interview where he said there are things he couldn't play on a fretted bass due to fret noise

IMHO, PURELY SUBJECTIVE VIEW, i am beginning to thing that digital effects for things like modulation and wah are better for bass, due to the full-range response.

and verdict on source audio fx?

for auto wah, i dunno, alot of them suck on bass. barge concepts recently release the grinder, i'm curious about source audio stuff, and the octavius squeezer is highly anticipated

I'm seriously considering defretting my current yamaha once i save up $$$ to buy either the stingray or the bongo. (have not made up my mind yet, i like some aspects of stingray, but not others, and i have some doubts of the bongo sound, but i'm leaning towards bongo now.)

I kinda like my Digitech Bass Synth Wah now. It's actually a pretty good wah/env filter, but I'm GAS-sing for a Bottom Feeder, since from the clips, the character sounds quite different from my BSW and Bassballs.
