Hey ChanMin, from where I was standing, your guitar was kind of muted.
Yo Yoshiki...truly a rocker with conviction.
Commercialization of the arts isn't a bad thing, after all the arts play a vital role in economics too. It need not be a sellout if a true blue rocker gets commercialize and gets into the glamour circuit. But the reality in commercial arts if you may is it tend to have a short life span. Because it caters largely to a large sector of consumer who is in the growing stage, whose taste for things, emotional state, physical appearance, and even financial independence keeps evolving, there is no infallible idol.
Does staying non-commercial helps? I don't know. The government may assist in some way, but don't forget that much of the arts funding comes from the commercial sector. At times the government (the civil sevants) may have to bend themselves backward (for personal reasons or otherwise) to ensure that their sponsored programmes don't fail (note that I did not use success). Without government assistance, it is even tougher.
Is the rock or indie community really independent? You are only independent when you can stand alone, by your very own ability. Successes out of you very own ability give you staying power.
Pursue your love, stay true, no harm trying.
Most importantly, if you win and offered a contract...STUDY THE CONTRACT. The prize that you claim may make you a respectable superstar or handcuff you depending what is written in the contract.
