Hi, I'm looking for guitar strings that have warmer, mellower and "darker" sound. Presently using nickel wound (blue pack) Curt Mangan, which is a bit bright for my semi-hollow. Any recommendation (brands/models)? Thanks.

imho, dont kill me..

1) change the capacitor on tone knob to bigger value, roll down tone knob a bit will darken it faster and more significant then different strings.

2) reduce pot values used in guitar for darker tone

3) up the mids, down the treble and up the bass on amp eq

not sure bout strings that gave warmer tone though. Coz i always find whichever strings, after plugging the guitar into amp, the colouration from pickup, amp eq, cable capacitance if any or thru pedals(with/without) wud have already change the characteristic of the strings ifself

Try on a set of Pure Nickels strings. Another good way around strings for archtop and F Hole guitars to get a much warmer feel and tone is to get a set of flat wound strings with a wound 3rd instead of plain for the "G" String. :)

take your old strings off the guitar
soak in used engine oil overnight or a few days
( or new engine oil if you are rich )
wipe down
boil strings to remove more engine oil
string up n tune
confirm warmer sound one

dun sue me if it does not "happen" for you : )

Have you tried that before? wander if it will really work, anywayz cool way!

your mum would probably strangle you if you were to boil anything with engine oil in her pot.

thicker strings, try something like 0.11s.

cool suggestion freekill, though it sounds like your strings will rust really good after that. lol

less bright strings would be the coated ones, this set for instance:

ehx strings are also gd, not too bright n have a gd feel. Maybe u can play with ur vol knob at 8 instead of 10.

I would go with what embryo said. Its the most practical way of getting a warm tone.

Nickel strings are warmer than nickel plated steel. Groundwound/flatwound strings are also warmer than the regular non-groundwound strings.

unsane: nice 1349 reference subbie
