Heard a story from Beez from Music Plaza before. He got repair jobs from church folks who brought their mid-range level (those above $3000) Martins and Taylors to the beach for their campfires.

2 weeks later, there were huge white spots on the guitars. Apparently, the seawater will permeate through the lacquer and stay trapped beneath it. The humidity will cause it to expand, thus creating bubbles in the lacquer and eating into the wood. Accordingly to Beez, it's impossible to save the guitar anymore...
