Singapore Politics

dir has the best reply here, lol.

then again, regarding the lucky cucumber, there certainly is too much hate going around here for the man who has given us so much comfort. it sure is easy to complain when we're all relatively well off and living comfortably and safely. the younger generation, myself included, tend to forget the merits our present government has.

also, i'm not exactly a pap supporter, but regarding the whole monopolizing of political power, it may not exactly be a bad thing if we view it as an alternative form of government that suits our tiny state very much. there is no room here for rioting, is there?

i am fully aware of the merits of there being a proper opposition party. however, in singapore's case, i am starting to feel that we may not need one.

i fully expect everyone here to shoot me down, i'm just being very honest. and i just want to stir up some debate. i have my own anti lky views which i will keep to myself for now.

but... but... but... i got direct bus~~~

*sob* *sob* Simply beautiful! Lol.. *sob*

Lol! Please lah.. Now MRT efficient ok.. Soon to be circle line coming up.. Now the trains go in circles! Just like how Singapore's politics go in circles but always end in the same way.. Namely:
LucKY CuCumBer

You are in the circle if you pay for Singapore Bus Service and Singapore Mass Rapid Transit service to meet your friends, to go to work etc..

I will forward this thread to the relevant agency this Friday. I hope this will be of help to the nation building.

Feel free to add your thoughts.

if you say anything wrong here, you will be dragged to court.
so better not.
IMHO,many things are to be said. hahaha
i am trying to understand this line of logic

better not say anything wrong ---> better not say anything at all

shouldn't a proactive and responsible society be saying
"better find out WHAT is wrong"?
should we not take some responsibility in providing the environment for our current situation; an ignorant and fearful public?

alot of people like to criticise the government. there is no point in criticising the government. what are you trying to achieve? a nation without any government?

there is alot of dissatisfaction here but nobody can find the words to explain it. it is better to criticise a political party (or maybe not?), a politician, or a policy.

fear not persecution; if you are enlightened enough to say something meaningful, you probably would have been as enlightened to know the limits. there is also no need to be aggressive. aggression will only serve to trigger a defensive reaction, which will come to nothing. satire, and tongue-in-cheek humour is sometimes more effective.

and always use your heart- don't be partisan to any figure or appear anti-establishment for the sake of it. nobody can criticise your views if you are always seeking an end that will benefit the people, the COUNTRY.

my personal fear is that singapore is increasingly being governed by elites. it is simple logic to say that the upper class are more apathetic and see less of a need for progressive change. i see singapore moving into an age where every cabinet minister was a government scholar. MPs, the true warriors for the people, are not taken seriously in parliament.

can anyone name me a cabinet minister who lives in HDB and takes public transport? how on earth can they relate to the problems of the average singaporean?

Man i hate Singapore politics Discussion, were like minor to the Government

i Really feel the need to voice out my Unhappy Opinions about the govt.
But if we talk about them They will treat anything we say as an insult, than will take actions against us.

i feel That its not fair theres no freedom of speech.

the system we have been using has worked wonderfully for us for the past 30-40 years since independence.

but the world is changing with the times, and so should we.

we should all update and upgrade our skills and thinking and way of doing things- the same should apply to the government.

I an am optimist and i believe that things have already begun to change. It will change much faster after the end of the great but no longer relevant lucky cucumber.

Actually.. True lah.. Singaporeans tend to complain too much also..
Without the government, Singapore would not be what it is today.. Heck I may not even be where I am now (in this particular room using this exact same computer)..

Haha.. We complain about the trivial things, ERP, GST, etc.. We think of the immediate effects, just like how the Americans are disappointed with the $600bn dollar package because they simply cannot comprehend the nature behind such a move.. Or how about foreign workers in Singapore? Heck, with their cheap labour, those foreign companies REMAIN in Singapore.. Even if a company offers 100 jobs, and 90 belongs to foreigners, that other 10 gives Singaporeans employment.. Without allowing foreigners, the entire company won't be there and those 10 jobs are non-existent.. There is a motive behind everything they do lah.. A strict set of rules, and a tolerant community has made Singapore a perfect place to live in.. My only gripe is that it is too perfect to the point it is superficial..

The government will always be one step ahead, and would (or should) perform tasks for the good of the nation.. Keep that in mind..

the grass is always greener on the other side.

find me a country that you'd rather live in,

and i'll find you someone from that country who prefers it here in Singapore.

oh great! forward this to them; IF IT'S TOO MUCH TO ASK, WE ONLY NEED TO BE GRANTED OUR FREE SPEECH! :D:D:D:D

BleedsNoMore, maybe you would like to post here exactly what you want to say? Free Speech is just a fashion word. Same like "World Peace".

Responsibility is the new thing.

So much for legalizing freedom of speech in our Constitution. :/

Aw, and whoever that was asking if I'm into politics, yes, I am intending to do politics when I grow up.

But people, remember that without an opposition, the government at the helm is permitted to do almost anything without much resistance. There isn't sufficient representation and things might not turn out to be happy at the very end.

I'm only disappointed with the lack of opposition and the way our government handles sensitive issues like freedom of expression and media censorship. Otherwise, the government is brilliant in building this nation.

I have nothing much against LKY. I only have one burning question to ask him. Why does he use ISA to discard his opposition? Think Operation Cold Store.

you're free to do anything you want; but others are free to respond or retaliate accordingly.

Haha.. We complain about the trivial things, ERP, GST, etc.. We think of the immediate effects, just like how the Americans are disappointed with the $600bn dollar package because they simply cannot comprehend the nature behind such a move...

Although i understand the logic of implementing these policies, i can't say shiok man i pay $1.50 for ERP.
Ironically, I choose to go that route knowing ERP is in operation.

Visa , i cant wait for you to get into the army and come out . i'm sure your thinking will be slightly different . Thats where you get to see a lil more of Singapore and your views .

Well , this is really side tracking but i think instead of posting a thread on singapore politics why not start a thread on soft.com politics and local music pollitics. it will be more interesting ... as we know a hell lot of you out there are guilty.

stop whining and start coming together ppl... we need each other to make singapura a rock and roll paradise that is free from nonsense and smarty pants trying to prove something to another virtual person here ..

i'm not gonna be an internet gangster and want to reply to the next post so all i can say is Pm me and we could talk... other than that lets not be keyboard heros ok? ..

why the hell am i bursting off like this... i donno and i dont really care.. but i love to see singapore music politics go down instead of singapore politics such as this in a music forum(i agree its a kopitiam, but whats the focus rite ?) for the matured i guess...

Visa it was good seeing you at weekend trip . Goood to know you are still out there in the front of the stage suppporting local bands, i wish to see to see you at every other lil smalest gig made out of passion like the way you speak out there aswell coz visa is a hero. It's perfectly alright to criticize certain elements of a party. That's what keeps the party on its feet and ready to adapt. But if you get too used to being in a position of power, there is nothing wrong with some other party coming around to shake things up a bit - not necessarily to overtake, but to remind the people in power that they are working for the people. In the end, the country benefits.

The main problem is that with so much control over our lives, a lot of Singaporeans have been conditioned NOT to think and NOT to express their opinions. If you disagree with the people in power, you either get washed up in the media - that is also controlled by the powers that be - or you get dragged to court - also controlled by the powers that be. Come to think of it, the electricity, water and houses we live in are also controlled by the powers that be. That in-built fear of expressing our opinions freely isn't exactly the best quality of Singaporeans (Though there are a lot of other qualities to be proud of)

Nobody is calling for a total overhaul, but sometimes welcoming or at least making considerations for an alternative voice enriches the political environment for the better. Opposite or government, most politicians in Singapore do have the country's best interest at hand, and that is something we can be proud of.

I think, apart from small little gripes, Singapore is a nice place to live in. The fact is that despite our size, we have managed to hold ourselves up against the best in the world, and that is something we should directly credit to the powers that be and the hardworking people of Singapore. It's truly a great achievement.

But seeking a stronger alternative voice is not a sin, it's not something to fear or frown upon. It doesn't equal to rioting, and it doesn't equal to anarchy.

It's just like being the top student in class. If another fellow student is challenging your top position in class, you'll just work harder to beat them and improve on your grades. But that's very different from beating them, kicking them in the face, and dragging them through the halls for everyone to laugh at.
