Singapore Politics

Singaporeans are not a very political bunch, we care more about our own daily livelihood, that's y all the gripes about price increases.

The lack of opposition in the gov is because IMO most of the opposition really lack credibility, they either oppose just for the sake of opposing or spring out of nowhere. But last election, the opposition quality is improving.

Singaporeans like to complain without giving alternative solutions, they just wanna complain and expect the solutions to come from someone and not themselves. We like to be spoonfed.

The somewhat autocratic move by the gov was prob done out of practicality, being a small nation we have to be united in order to prosper, in fighting will just drag us down. Our only resource is our own people. But now that our nation is prospering, things may change as we mature as a nation, but it takes time.

Shyam bro:

you are certainly right about that, i'm still young and have alot more to learn and experience.

gigs, anytime! I love going to every single that gig I possibly can. The day we stop going to gigs is the day we might as well tattoo "hypocrite" across our foreheads. I've just been busy the past couple of months with my exams and stuff so I haven't been able to, but now that they're over you'll be seeing alot more of me :)

as for Armchair Critic, we gotta wait till Boon's A Levels are over, so I think maybe we'll be playing again in late November/December.

Cheers!

BleedsNoMore, maybe you would like to post here exactly what you want to say? Free Speech is just a fashion word. Same like "World Peace".

I have to say this is extremely true. So many people say freedom of speech freedom of speech. What exactly is this u want to say? That PAP should stop this monopoly in the Singapore? That PAP should stop taxing all of us?

Look at the lives we're living. Have you been outside of Singapore and I don't mean holidays but like living WITH the people? The infrastructure, efficiency and overall standard of living compared to Singapore is like total CRAP. Sure I admit that the political situation here is boring and all but seriously how much of a better place can any opposition make Singapore? It's already pretty darn good. Not the best, not perfect but definitely good enough. We re all educated, civilised, have good homes and good facilities. Even some 1st world countries don't have this kind of luxury.

And also people complain of the Lee family controlling too much major things in Sg. This one I don't have much to say because I personally disagree with it:mrgreen:

But other than that, I don't have any complaints. There, That's what I feel about the political situation, and I don't see any reason to censor what I am saying. Cheers

I'm guilty of not knowing much about politics.

I don't really know if I'm okay with the current political situation or that I just don't really give a flying bleep! haha

Jia lat sia, I feel kinda dumb =/

it is not possible to have a world without politics.

politics naturally happen when there is a group of people. within a family, within a class, within a community, at the workplace.

when you have to deal with people, it is political by nature.

OK - few things that I see as an issue.

1. The level of influence the government has over the judiciary. Very very dangerous. When a time comes when the government actually makes a mistake - they cannot be held liable. The judiciary will be too flawed and controlled. In any country the Executive must always be totally independant of the judiciary. Basically the fear will be - it's my way or no way.

2. How much one family controls communications, housing, transportation, etc. Basically all the basic needs is being controlled by a single family. Wouldn't it be nice over a family dinner they decide to raise the fares of buses, SMRTs.. etc? With absolute control - the government will easily pass the motion. What if the citizens decide to protest? Well the cops are obviously on the government's side. Where are the citizens to look for justice? In the courts of course. Oh wait - look at point no 1.

Apart from that - Singapore is has a very good government that knows how to govern it's country.

let me just be honest with you guys..

as the thread starter

i feel that we as singaporeans are not given proper rights.
like free speech and all that other stuff you guys have mentioned

however
yes...our government has been successful in developing singapore..
everyone around the world says that
singapore is a safe country
singapore is a fun place to live
and all that
but some of us suffer
well
thats part and parcel of life

LKY is a hero
but i think its time he let his son do the talking and spread out his full potential instead of still hanging on

dr chee?
yeah he has his rights as the opposition party
but i feel that he is being pushed to the corner
hes bankrupt now
but he is still fighting for what he believes in
that is what i call a hero
never back down
never give in

yeah
he does rally at toa payoh central
spreading his beliefs
and
selling his books

but dont you think the government should take it as friendly competition..

well
thats how i feel
feel free to correct me
anyway this is a friendly discussion
nothing serious :)

i always take people seriously
especially when they post their ramblings in the form of a poem
free speech is not a right nor a privilege here
the price we pay for security and stability is pretty clear
and as people have pointed out before
instead of going out and doing something, anything
we sit in our chairs, stroking our chins and complaining

we fear the government and their policies
we let them spoonfeed us and our families
we let politicans do the politics and the banks to handle our money
because at the end of the day
we know we can go home and sleep peacefully

(chorus coming soon)

A Haiku In Honour of This Thread

My Friend, The Dear Threadstarter
Your Rappin', Rhymin'
Ain't So Slick As I Thought (Word).

Yeahhh this topic again. OK all I have to say is that the only thing that pisses me off more than how much our ministers are paid is how NO-ONE is doing anything about it. Look man we've got 6 pages of thread on this forum so far, around 60% of the replies have been very much that of dissatisfaction towards our current situation. If this were most other countries with a political "scene", the people who would have given these replies in this thread which constitute 60% of this thread, would not have posted their reply at all.

They would have done something about how shitty the situation is.

Like join a party, or start a rally (can always try :) ) , or form a club or society or some shit. at least do something that adds value to your country than sit in front of your computer screen while eating Mac's while your oily fingers express how pissed off you are at this country. (This is actually what i'm doing right now haha) Just ask yourself, would you skip an exam to attend a rally or a party meeting or even a minister's walkabout? I've never heard of a Singaporean doing that. Gotta get the O level passes or we'll be dumbshitz right.

I'm not saying that I do any of this shit, I'm as much a part of the system as you. We're not an apathetic people. We're just not pro-active. And I'm as un-pro-active (such a word) as everyone else that has replied to this thread.

let me be straight forward...

in this government..

NO FREE SPEECH!

i see dr chee getting arrested again and again just cause he expresses his views...

nuff said

free2rap91, i hope you do know the reasons for his arrests. If you feel that he was wronged, please state your reasons.
