the quality of competition this year is incomparable to previous years much less compared to other countries. no disrespect to the contestants, i think the judges have to take responsibility for this.

This should be the LAST & FINAL Spore Idol - EVER!
Singapore Idol gets an "A" plus plus - for AMATEUR. Mediacorp also made a BIG MISTAKE to time the slot before the weekly broadcast of America's Got Talent. I feel SORRY for the contestants, and all the wanna-be's. The contrast is dramatic - you have the professionalism of Nick Cannon and the AGT judges, and then we have Gurmit (who I know is trying his best, but his weekly shouted vocals, "come on Singapore, let's hear it for the contestants" etc is getting very very trite and boring) and the attempts by the producers, judges, host to try to achieve some reasonable professional standard.
1. How do you vote for a contestant even before he or she starts performing? So, as many of you have pointed out - it's a popularity show.
2. The 'consultants' assigned to coach the Idol hopefuls really should be more cautious with
a) whether their chosen outfit for the evening flatters them or distracts, or get viewers irritated and wondering why they choose something better
b) choice & arrangement of song - what are the music coaches doing? Some weeks, it's so obvious that the arrangements are totally off!
c) mixing levels - somehow the vocals are drowned 4 out of 5 times by the music ... Mr Behind-the-Scenes Producer ... can you please adjust? Absolutely shocking!
2. Dick Lee was coming across as a "dirty old man" in the first few episodes, when he kept gushing about how beautiful Sylvia Ratonel is. Dick - I get the impression you often mock and laugh at the participants! Your constant teasing / putting down of Dwayne was CRUEL. Ken Lim never failed to come across as patronising - come on, Simon Cowell you will never be ... you have many valid comments, but that "hand" that goes up to silence the audience is RUDE & ANNOYING.
3. Florence Lian at least provides constructive comments - and she NEVER puts down contestants who have not performed well that evening.
4. The studio audience is PATHETIC. Their banners supporting their respective Idol hopefuls are distracting and amateurish.
5. What's Hady Mirza's role?
SERIOUSLY - Spore Idol is an embarassing parody of the franchise! Let's face it - our talent pool is limited, and those who actually vote are voting based on popularity, and have NO IDEA what real talent is.
And the winners sadly, will be going nowhere. That's the hard reality in Singapore. Hady Mirza won the Asian Idol only because the voters were split between the other 2 stronger (and more talented) contestants - was it Vietnam & the Philippines ... something like that.
AMERICAN IDOL starts again in Jan 2010 (Star World has been advertising it) - it'll be a welcomed relief from the very cringe-worthy and embarassing version in Singapore!

zxvc - long post was result of 4 or 5 months of pent-up aggro every time i tuned in to SI, each week HOPING it would get better. Sucker for punishment. Esp after the "high" of AI and Adam Lambert.

Television IS boring. With or without Singapore Idol. Unless you have cable, which I don't, thus making it unbearable to watch.

Looking at the talents so far in SI, I have no doubt that there are kids with HUGE potential to be stars.
It's just a pity that Singaporeans and overseas investors and record companies obviously do not think that Singapore has an sizable enough market to actually properly groom and market these English-language singers and musicians.
So, what you see here is just a platform for Fremantle and Mediacorp to earn your moolah through the votes. It has never been about the contestants and the local music scene, that's for sure.
I kinda miss Live N' Loaded, really.
The production value, the overall setting and all that was quite a credible effort, I must say. If not for the wailing monkeys in the audience and the dubious choice of some acts, I would have tuned in to every single episode.
I guess with Singapore idol, either there's a strict production budget, or the producers aren't that creative (or just plain lazy), because the stage lighting and setup really looks sloppy and amateurish to me. It looks NOTHING like the standard that we see on American Idol, setting aside of course that Caucasians generally look better on television.
I also would prefer someone more witty for the host (think Adrian Pang). Someone who doesn't have to rely on the same lines and tactics, someone who is quick on his feet and wits. Someone who speaks VERY good English.
