Revolutionary Musicians

LINKIN PARK!

their tunes are hummed by everyone cuz its made to be one of those ear worms which are bloody annoying and stuck in your head, no more musical then the car alarm or car reverse sensor sound

my entry would be
the who, led zeppelin, chuck berry, kurt cobain, angus and malcolm young and hendrix (hes a household name man, so what if his live tone sucked, it doesnt change the fact that hes labelled by many to be the best guitarist to walk the planet)

Nostradamus!

Yeah I do mean the astrologer..he pretty much predicted which musician will give birth to what revolution. We owe him!

Ok modern revolutionary would be......Michael Jackson for me. Wait that's for dancing. Well..anooo...uhh...if u mean music as in its entirety, then it has got to be none other than Elvis Presley, Jimi Hendrix of course. More recent? Hah..Iron Maiden & Metallica. Linkin Park, yeah sure why not.

Well, bullshiat. Modern times afterall, i won't really call them revolutionary. Only real revolutions were during the times of the Renaissance, Mozart and Beethoven. Then again i think of Metallica, i think of revolution. Oh no. Whyyy?! Joudan ja naiii..

i actually think linkin park is a revolutionary band. im not a linkin park fan wat-so-ever, but to write so many riffs, vocal melodies and songs in general that makes ppl get hooked to them and are memorable, i think dats just good songwriting. they did bridge the gap between metal and hip-hop afterall? sure, u can argue that incubus (Im a fan of them btw) had some songs with these kind of elements written (maybe with more funk elements in them than hip-hop) in them way b4 linkin park but they WERE NOT hits, those songs are not what made incubus INCUBUS.

just my opinion :)

to add to my previous list:

U2
Madonna
Dave Mathhews Band
Fiona Apple
Nirvana AND Silverchair
Prince
Stevie Wonder
Jason Mraz (I think he got alot of good ideas in his songwriting)
Massive Attack
Dexter Gordon

This is a good thread i think. bump for thread starter.

why has no one mentioned kate bush?

Kate Bush came before Rickie Lee Jones (slightly, but still), and also inspired Bjork (Bjork herself acknowledged this early in her career) and (arguably) Tori Amos (who will never really admit it though). And it's very interesting that her music and vision could've sparked and influenced both Britney-Spears-type concerts as well as relatively more eclectic stuff like Bjork's music (references: http://www.amazon.com/Kate-Bush-Under-Review/dp/B000EXZHPQ , in case that hypothesis sounds too improbable w/o a reference). Was talent-spotted by David Gilmour (Pink Floyd) when she was quite young etc.

i'm not in love with her stuff but her talent and influence are still undeniable.

edit: oops, RoRK did mention her. sorry! well at least i elaborated :D

aahh and i second (eh, third actually) whoever mentioned 2pac!!! i'm not sure whether he was "revolutionary", but i think he was definitely very, very influential.

sorry for multiple posts but i thought i'd throw in some musicians that are not so much at the forefront as those that've been already suggested...

HDH, Max Martin, Phil Spector, Joe Meek... (i guess you could argue that the last two aren't "real" musicians because they're mostly known as producers... but their ears, musical sense, vision... those were revolutionary... particularly Joe Meek! - he's mostly the reason why people record the way they do these days, I think), Sondheim, Liszt (first ang moh rockstar), and er David Tao (just looking at it in the context of Chinese music).

ok i'm done for now.

The Police were certainly a revolutionary group - their sound, the songs, the drums, the guitars, THAT voice, and all the weaving of different musical genres backed up by ballsy rock feel. What's interesting about them is that no one has come even close to doing the type of music that they did. This is quite different from the other revolutionaries, thus, mentioned.

I recalled at least one copycat but they were largely only a parody.

who can forget Tupac shakur... People are still telling him to rest in peace til today. and some still believe he's alive, along with elvis.

Tupac, may he rest in his peace. I would appreciate if folks can enlighten me, and I am sure others here, as to how Tupac was revolutionary.

This isn't a flame bait but a plain and simple Q to get to know about him.

I'd also like to sugggest to have Lou Reed and Velvet Underground, Joe Pass and Leonard Cohen to the list.

Cheers
RoRK
