The soon to be released Workhorse by Visual Sound is worth checking out...price and performance wise !!

I am tired of production amps nowadays...cheap China parts plus the amp just don't sing ....bad recyled circuit design and all that gimmick with the one 12AX7 preamp tube and and ....ok i stop here!!
:( you plug in and regret why you ever picked up guitar :?

See > you can have a well designed SS amp and you can have badly designed tube amp ... Thats why you need to test drive >>>
...futhermore amps need to be pedal friendly ...most are not >> people spend money makin them pedal friendly ...and the list goes on

Oh ya then we got the speaker mojo... but it does make a differance tho .. huge >>being the final end of your tone!!

So please don't expect Cheap amps = great tone ...as most amps are priced according to what it delivers...thats why i encourage those with low budget to go for proven used amps on good deals.... enjoy life makin music.

Pitchard amps anyone?

2k USD for an SS amp.

I would like to try them one day. I'm not yet totally won over by the "tube amps = greatest" arguement.

I don't think tube amps are the greatest. But it's pretty true most of the manufacturers use mainly cheaper components on the SS amps.

Money and design wise though, it doesn't make sense to get a Pritchard. For all the techniques used to emulate tube amps, you probably find a lot more components inside the amp that can contribute tone suck. (I'm a believer of less is more when it comes to amp design, and while I don't make amps, I'm inclined to believe what amp maker expert says)

Beyond a more reliable amp, I think it's strangely, more economical to get a tube amp instead of a Pritchard.

The other thing about tube amps is that the market is saturated with boutique tube amp makers with an interest in older classic designs more than new designs. But hey, if you believe in minimizing the coloring of tone, the amp design should be as simple as possible.

Well said...if you have a look at those boutique tube amps ..especially Z ... part count is kept minimal so as to churn out good tone without excessive coloration and retaining timbre.

Hey guys, i dun usually post here but here's my experience..

I've used and tried a handful of tube and solid state amp and neither config promises a good tone. Bear in mind that many reviews, artistes endorsements and what they really use are their benchmark of their individual requirements. Most musicians in Singapore have to be very realistic in acquiring gear. In a nut shell, tube amps need to be crank and properly warmed up to produce magical tones you hear on albums. Solid state is developed to emmulate a good tone at lower volume. The new digital stuffs from line 6 further pushes this envelope. So the bottom line is, what's your need in the quest for tone? I've used to own a Marshall JCM900 100W amp but never get to go beyond 1.5 in volume. (domestic home usage). Did I have a good tone? No. I possess a amp that have the potential of giving good tone but I seldom able to get there. So what's the point? Going all analog is good but it's not always practical unless you're a signed rock star and play in arenas day in day out. But for most of the guitarist here, to enjoy playing at home most of the time. It's not worth the chase.

enough rambling..

and to be even more realistically, the idea of having all sort of fancy amps but playing at home actually give rise to the happening of name dropping of gear usage round internet forums  and to a smaller extend, ending the responses with this irritating smilieee 8)
