Randolf Arriola (embryo) Guitar Gear 101

The advice is much appreciated, Randolf. You're quite right to point out the bit about the tone knob; the OS-2 has the knob turned to something like 10 o'clock but the direct drive's tone goes up to 3 o'clock. EQ on my pathfinder 15R is flat. I'll go play around with it somemore. Love this thread! :D

Tanx for the kind words. :)The thing about the neutral position of single tone knobs on drive pedals depends on the distortion knob's settng. Basically at minimum drive the tone knobs should be neutral around 12 o clock. As you dial in more distortion you'll need to lower the tone knob. The Barber DD depending on which version seems to have his tone pot configured for both the tone and dist knob to be at 12 o clock postion.

The RAT a (DS1 variant) is a whole different beast altogether as far as the tone knob is concerned as it's called filter and works in the opposite direction but does the same thing as a tone knob.

The other thing about trying to dial in your desired tone on the Pathfinder is that Vox amps have less of the low end oomph compared a Fender Twin which they were originally a variation of.

randy daddy.... mod yer Vox to output to a cab. Sounds way much better. that pesky 8 incher can't move much air man.

I whacked in a Electro Harmonix 10 incher and did some destructive plastic surgery to fit it all in. While doing that I swapped the clipping diodes on the board to LEDs so that it clips at a higher level. Much more useful.

Hi Edwin :)
Interesting approach to adopt when necessity arises. Heh.

I feel that the classic Vox AC30 is in the league of legendary amps among the greats like the Fender Twin Reverb Marshall JTM 45 etc. These days however I do suspect that most people are captivated more so by the retro cool aesthetics rather than the actual performace of the modern Voxes. :)

The coolest piece of modern Vox equipment available today imho is really the Vox Tonelab

of course! its all about the LOOKS!

I've got nothing but praise for these emulators. Its like a gabajillion stuff that actually sounds good in an affordable box.

unlike those days when we had gabajillion stuff thats crap in a plastic casing called Zoom.

I once witnessed a kid oggling at gear with his impatient mom and dad at a local musc store. The kid was obviously eyeing on the more pricey pieces of gear but the mommy pointed the zoom range to the kid and said: "boy! aiya dun waste time oredi! take the zoom la! see! so small! won't clutter your messy bed room and see, see so fierce the name, sound sure like jet plane wan!"

Boy to Mom: "Dun wan dun wan! This one! (pointing to the voxes) or this one....soooo cool one! My fren say the sound can make my Ibanez sound like Fender! I wan I wan!"

Alamak see la! Now we hop scotch from compressors to amps to multieffects! Yay!

Ok so let's discuss about the one device among guitar gear that i feel truly encapsulates the term "Option Anxiety"

Multieffects

Everybody wants one but most get confused, frustrated and pissed off by these all in one, lot's of exciting promises and headaches magical boxes.

Feel free to post your likes and dislikes and queries about your favourite multieffector. :)

The earlier times, my main beef about multieffects was the 0.5 seconds of silence when you change banks but now that has changed and probably eliminated.

The other was that no matter what, the sound always sound like its being veiled and hiding behind a concert hall curtain. Well, that has changed as well.

Multieffects these days, good ones like the Big ass Boss and Line6 are all very decent and works really well. You can even assign pedal position and move stuff here and there unlike the old days where you're fix with EQ-Drive-Modulation-Delay/Reverb

Only thing is that it lacks mojo when compared to colourful stompboxes and messy wiring. Single pedals anytime but those multieffects AREN'T slackers like they used to be.

The Line6's modelling technology used in the POds and the Variaxe is pretty cool and has it's applications in the right places but I still feel that Roland were way way ahead in the cutting edge technology and so spot on when they came out with the COSM Modelling technology ahead of the pack with theVG8 system in the mid 90's.

I spent many sleepless nights when I had this in my hands. For the 1st time I could hear instant results of almost any cross combination of guitars and pickups with efx and amps and miking techniques. I was so blown away. Still am. :)The VG88 system that I use is quite a dream come true for me...and then some. BEcos!!! Now there's the VG99!!! (slaps forhead!)

Joni Mitchell apparently stated that among many reasons the budget busting logistics of touring with enough guitars to cater to her back catalogue of songs with 52 different open tunings simply made it impossible until the VG8 technology came around. She was spotted playing a Parker Fly with the Roland Gk pickup driving the Roland VG8 and she was smiling!

Kirk Hammet used it for the recording sessions, Reeves Gabrels used it without amps on stage for the Bowie tours and others followed suit shortly after.

:)

:) Hey wait a sec! I think I misquoted

Actually the kid said "This Bling Bling Chromey pedal Multieffector, my fren said his frens all say the reviews say can make my flamey top/birds eye maple neck Fender Custom Shop (tat mummy and daddy bought for my 15th birthday) will sound like my fren's Ibanez!"

Cool multieffector nevertheless. :)

Wah can make ibanez sound like fender ah... I more interest in the newer model which can make me sound like heaven

Heh :)
Subliminal marketing strategies aimed at the masses and the expected Hype that happens when the targeted masses form their own interpretations falling for the marketing tactics.

Eh eh! Multieffector can sound nice lor... its how you tweak it. And whether you can live with its quirks.

I especially love it when they have a Tube with LEDs in them... mojo.

hmmm...

anyone ever notice it seems so much easier to play on a multi-fx unit ?
no idea why, but when i was using a zoom707 last time it took virtually no effort at all.
den after switching to analog ...
"WAH ~! So many mistakes ~!"

erm .. i know it's the multi-fx .. coz switched back to it just to test out this theory.
:p
