Project guitar

Hey fellow softies, after much oogling at the project guitar appreciation thread, i've decided that i want to work on one before i enter army :D

so here are some enquiries that i've come up with.

1) choosing the wood for the neck and body.(pros/cons) and where to get relatively good ones. :)

2) electronics wiring/intonation/neck and pup height adjustment.. possible to do at a local store?

3) paintjob, sanding and lacquers/clear coat, whats good to use?

1) i think u could get it from warmoth from usa? as for the wood u could refer to http://www.jemsite.com/jem/wood.htm and see which one attracts you more.
2) yupps. everything could be done in local store. examples are standard value or guitar connection.
3) lol i think normal spraypaint and laquers easily available in hardware shops would be sufficient hahas.

I get my bodies and necks from USA Custom Guitars. Look at their Web specials often. I got a few gems from there.

Electronics + basic setup, I do myself but nuts + major work I send them to KC, Maestro/Zen. I hate to do frets + fret dressing and do not have the proper tools to do so.

I'm learning how to cut nuts now. Just need to invest in proper nut files. In term of cost, if you're making a few guitars, the cost of the files will pay for itself, but if its a one off, send it out.

Paints, I like to use RJ spray cans. I also like to dye the wood with Dylon fabric dye. So far the colour fastness are OK. Colour haven't fade yet. Ha! Also I like to use Colron products for wood dyes/oil finish.

I have a few threads somewhere inside the huge Soft archives for some projects.

Oh and remember to comb your hair up or use a hairband. You'd wanna see everything clearly when you do DIY.

EMO

Btw i can't work with those Rj spray cans ...i find pylox better. :)

I prefer RJ's nozzle. Pylox nozzle gets painful after a while BUT your paintjobs are way better than mine... YOU WIN!!!

no lah...just that i find the Rj's tend to be ....weird...
Imo both Pylox and Rj no goods lah ...the smell ....jialat.

I have stopped spray painting as i want to live longer and keep my family :)

there are some good resources out the online, some with videos too, go search. Gr3y posted one video on water based dye bursting here thats VERY good... learnt heaps from that video.

guitar reranch, stew mac and a few others.

haha! thanks gr3y. the video looks awesome! hey, lets say i want to do a flying V with paintjob inspired by zakk wylde. how do i go about getting the template of the bullseye out? tape? like kinda hard to tape a circle. haha

you are asking tooooo much.

somethings gotta learn yourself.
somethings gotta just call up the shops and ask for the price
sometimes gotta use google.com to search and search and search and READ and READ and search some more.

now you know why some of your questions are not answered? ;)
