Paying to Play - How do you feel about it?

i agree with roy, aside from giving us flyers to give out to our friends, unlike my prior experience with froplay (no flaming intended here) he also has guys to give out the flyers at places. a friend got a flyer at a mall (he wouldn't tell me which) and he was surprised :D

i'm sure it's hard work, the bands also work hard to ensure that they play their best. i had a gig once a ij, i still remember, staying up late till 3+ just to work on our songs and straight jam for 2 weeks 2 hrs each. in the end, the crowd loved us, but we are just asking a favor to lower the number of tickets from 40+ to 10, is that reasonable enough?

As what is mentioned earlier, each of us has our own way of doing things.

U need not to commit to it if u are not comfortable with it.

In the end it's about sustaining the high venue rent.

Why don't u suggest to the landlord to lower the venue rental cost.

In that way, bands need not to sell tickets and Gas Haus can charge tickets as low as $2!

Everyone will be happy right?

Then again, not everything is as easy as what u might think it is

i believe those who strongly think they can do a better job should stand up and let me know. SOFT need talents who can organise gigs with the following expertise:

1. Get sponsorship to pay for everything. Venue, sound system, instrument, crew and bands.

2. Get max exposure via TV, radio, newspaper, mag, flyers and street-team with very little money. really little coz creativity will overcome all problem.

3. Get more audience than those 7th month hungry ghost festival performance.

4. Everyone will sing praises about the gig on SOFT! before and after the show.

Please forward your CV to info@soft.com.sg .

ccb... got gig complaine.... no gig complaine...... knn you try and organise a gig ah... if YOU(whoever is complaining) to do a gig..... with your bloddy sponsors and where you invite bands, both new and old, to play at your gig without having them to sell tix and to pay them..... you go and try ah.....

do your own gig lor. go thru the MDA red tape, the PELU red tape, the venue rental, the promotional plan, the marketing plan, the ticketing plan, price to pay for flyers and posters, the whole total cost plan...then when the day comes, worry bout the security deposit, the police asking to find out who the organiser is after someone complained bout the noise, worry bout timing going awry, fights from moshing, possible equipment damage, clean up after gig, and probable disgruntled bands complaining in a forum bout the whole thing.

when all you wanted to do was to give them a chance at performing on stage.

:(

....

Nothing is free in this world. U have to work hard to get where you want to be. Playing at gigs = experience = exposure for you and your band. If u have to pay a little cash for something as priceless as experience, or sell some tix to help gain more exposure. What is wrong with that? It's a damn tough job for organizers. Why can't we help them out a little? What do we stand to lose? The organizers might even lose thousands of dollars just to organize a gig and let us play. They are HELPING US.

What is all the shit that the organizers have to go through compared to us (for example)paying like $20 to play at a gig / selling tix?

Thank you organizers. Its been really tough for all of you. Without you guys and all your hard work, there wouldn't be as much gigs and local music going around right now. There are people who really appreciate what you guys are doing.

I salute all of you.

Heartrock singapore

nay. It's the truth what.

Some people take/expect alot and give nothing back in return. These are the selfish people. Some are just too chicken shit to give their names or their band's name out here in the forum. Hiding behind the pc with their bad spelling and grammatical mistakes. Blasting organizers like as if you guys owe them something.

Read the contract regarding the gig lah. Can't read english is it? Don't understand the terms isit? Can't sell the tix? Don't play. Pull out. Look for gigs ELSEWHERE. Don't go and just sign the contract, agree to the terms, have problem selling the tix, play at the gig.....

and then come here and complain. +snort+

haha.. nice one guys!!

so unless you KIDS know what you're doing and have organised a decent gig before.. otherwise shut up and listen!! no one told you to agree to the terms of the organiser if you didn't want to.. so in the end the stupid one is you!!

sheesh, im gone for a few days and this thread shot up like crazy. *shakes head*

i dont understand why some are complaining about being forced to selling tickets. as far as im concerned, i won't have taken up the gig opportunity if i can't fullfill its terms and conditions. *shrugs* like they say, never bite off more than you can chew.

oh wells, i hope issues like this resolve soon, we already have 'bad performing venues' and 'sell or face the consequences: the gig ticket story' threads already... i'd expect threads like 'the dead crowd' (tale of the most disappointingly boring audience ever) and/or 'wrong band, wrong stage' (tale of *insert genre here* band playing in a *insert another genre here* gig) to appear real soon, if not later. petty issues, big hoohaa.

and i have to thank roy actually, wasn't for this effort, the gigs that i've performed wont be happening.

last but not least - support the local scene

Well if you sign on for the gig and cant sell the bloody tickets then its your own bloody problem because...either you didnt read the whatever contract properly or you didnt understand terms/conditions. Similiar analogy....you sign contract with company for sales position. Found that you cant hit sales target and your monthly dues suffers. Then you go kao pei at your boss? Welcome to the real world.
As it has been emaphize many MANY times. You dont like playing to play THEN dont go for those gigs. No one is FORCING anyone. If everything is listed out clearly in the whatever contract then it's your own bloody fault if you sign it.

i have news from my friend who is gonna play for you music mania 5.. i wont mention the band's name but they told me they suppose to sell 50 tickets and 30 tickets are compuslery and if not the need to use own money to cover for the 30 tickets.. i told them to step down from the gig but they say they wanted to play so bad and doesnt wan to let you down... how does that sound mr. organizer?

i will tear u down , i will expose you all. many people has already stand up against you all. u selling the scene, and i will tear you down.

i'm on both the organizer's side and the unhappy people.

first, the unhappy people.you guys are unhappy that the gig costs a bomb and all.the organizers did state the t&c,if you guys know that you cant sell all of it,then dont sign up for the gig.i know you can't help it that your friends 'buay' you at the last minute, but thats human nature what.talk c*ck but atlast don't turn up.gotta agree with me on that right?

2ndly,to the organizers.appreciate that they're giving the newbies a chance to showcase their music.but to the unhappy people,20,30 tickets is alot man.i'm just assuming that they just want to cut down on the amount of tickets to be sold.

alamak easy say right, both parties have to help each other out man.
the organizers also have to fork out their money,no doubt about that.its like the same la.bands and organizers both fork out cash for some happening gig.i mean like,if both parties understand each other's needs and discomfort + working it out,i'm sure this wouldn't blow up.

it's not fair that everyone blames the organizers for the ex ticket.who's gonna cover the rental cost and all?

it's simple really.you guys should actually organize a gig and see how much you all have to fork out.i'm not complaining cause i know i can't afford organizing one, yet.

but i still cant help saying that 30 tickets is too much.THEN AGAIN,you shouldn't agree on it if you know you won't be able to sell.

p.s Roy,see you next week at total metalcore and the following week at music mania 5! :)
