Paying to Play - How do you feel about it?

hey XTREME-BOY, i've been to some of your gigs... well they were ok, but personaly i think 10 bucks is just too expensive, how bout 8 bucks? cause like some are just new bands... and about your latest post, is it maybe because there are other better bands performing that the supporters wanna see? plus dun tell me all of your the bands managed to sell 80 tickets?
maybe it think you should see how big the bands performing are.... we just wanna perform, gain experience and have fun, and from what i heard that it's a must to sell tickets for band that are performing, it's demoralising for bands to have some hope of making through the scene

i suggest that organizers organize a gig comprising of 50% "well-known" bands and the rest, new young bands... then make alot of flyers and disseminate it 1 month before the gig. the "well known" bands will attract ppl to come to the gig and at the same time ppl will get to see the new bands perform. even if this method does not require bands to sell tickets, i still think there is a chance that more ppl will come. i believe it is better doing a gig this way instead of putting up all new bands in a gig and expecting them to sell tickets..

To all those organizers out there. Plan your gigs carefully, Do know whats local scenes is all about.

Get people to sponsor for venue, drinks , etc etc. A sponsor can mean alot.
And then, the tickets can be lower down to about 3-5 bucks.

Don't you think so ?

Im not here to flame anyone here, I know what you are doing is to have new bands to perform and gain experience. GOOD JOB on that. But, I think the terms and conditions is abit too much.

Thanks for reading.

CHEERS to LOCAL SCENES !!

True true... I TOTALLY agree with you.

Ever wondered why we have NEVER worked with new bands?

think about it.. they are bringing muse to singapore... COME ON WHEN DID THEY EVERY BOARDCAST MUSE'S SONG OR ANY PICTURES OF MUSE BEFORE WHERE THEY ARE A BIG HIT IN EUROPE? and now they are bringing them to singapore? just like slipknot.. advertising and blah blah blah

I dunno about you guys... I is only have 2 things to say which is will piss people off.

1) The grammar in this thread is pretty funny.

2) If the system sucks and you wanna opt outta it, you can always come up with your own system. This is not like running for government; this is just organising events/ shows. Not happy with the way one party works. Don't work with him/ her. If not, just start doing your own shows with your rules. It's as simple as that. If not, find a better person to work with.

i think what we trying to say here is that the gigs should be more organized. get ready a moth before the gig, so you have lots of time to advetise, 1 great gig can change the scene so much so it's better than having 50 gigs but nobody turns up for them. advertise them, find a good way to advertise big with small costs. you cannot just rely on bands to help you sell tickets, just look at skafest or some other big gigs. maybe bands do can play a part but you cnnot expect much from them, they are already doing a great deal in playing at your gig. it's hard work preparing for a gig, espacially for newbie bands, the countless jamming sessions and all the time spent practising... those money spent on jam sessions do paly a part cus they have to fork out money. not eveyone owns a drumset, guitars amps .etc and i dun think the comission is enough to cover those costs

yea agingyouth dam the media.

Damn the media?

No media, no one know you've got a show? Then no one come and watch your show. No one watch your show, then people and organiser think you are not a crowd pulling act. Then no one invite you and pay you goot moolah for performing. Then you have no show to play. Then you start complaining on internet forums you are facing fewer shows.

Like that how, bro playingplay bro?

In organising gigs, both of organisers & the bands have to put efforts in making them a success.

Let's not put lots of blames just to 1 party.

It will not be fair.

I've never seen any organisers here blaming bands on whether they are good or not.

It's about working together and respect each other's opinions.

If u don't agree to the ticket selling, then u should find other gigs opportunities.

Everyone is entitled to their own way of doing things

And by the way, I've always been grateful to Gas Haus as they open their door to any form of music, Punkrock, Metal, Ska, Oi & they are not being choosy about the bands.

In fact Gas Haus has always support local talents and provide platforms for new & old bands to showcase their music.

It's this how u appreciate their support?

And u need to know that it's not cheap to rent the venue.

They have to earn money so that they can sustain their monthly rent

Hope u can consider that in mind.

Thanks!

Roy

another thing i suggest is that gigs should start from 3 or 4pm and end no later than 10pm.. from past experiences, i always see ppl leaving gigs by 9+ or 10pm.. really pity the last band playing if their slot is like 10+...

roy has a point. and if you guys think that its so unreasonable then dont sign up la. some bands can sell 30 tickets some bands cant. if you cant, dont sign up. it's as simple as that.

Thanks daryl for making it clear to some of the unclear minds

Hey AgingYouth, i might not be an expert in this buisness kind of stuff, but like studying, study smart not study hard ;)

how may i suggest like advetise gigs at thoses place popular to the local scene? at youthpark? pennisula plaza? or how bout give upcoming gig flyers at another gig? espically those of the sme genre? won't those people who support the music come down?

Hi maxis_black, what AgingYouth meant is that it's not as easy as what u may think it is.

We learn through experiences.

Some is easy & some not that easy.

i know it's not easy, i fully understand that. even when organising other stuff, it's stressful, but do cut some slack for the bands, they do work hard for the gigs...

ye

As i said,

Get sponsors, then both organizers and band will gain. Sponsors get advertised, organizers get to be very happy and band will gain more experience and exposure. Try Youthpark. or other outdoor.

From my experience, Free shows gathers alot of people. Scared of losing money? Make a tentage to sell stuffs, like merchandise, tshirts. And get rent from these stalls.

Young peoples dont go to PUBS. Under 16 or Under 18 (unsure*) cant stay out late at night after 11. And gashaus had alot of fights. A very dangerous place to perform.

Like what i said, both organisers & bands have to work hard to make the gig successful.

For example, I always print 1,000 A5 full colour flyers. U know how much it cost?

Why not u find out and let me know about the price.

And I've printed 400 standard tickets every week for my gig.

And i've printed posters to be distributed to jamming studios & music shops.

These are some examples of the effort i put in as an organiser.

I even pay some crew to distribute flyers around shopping malls.

And u r talking about bands working hard?

Once more, the idea behind a successful gig is to work hard together and not ot put the load on just 1 party.
