Partscaster/DIY guitar Appreciation Thread 2009

all parts rw.. nice!
how come now all become brokers club? haha
nitro.. so u whipped out all the lacquer? is that neck for the daphne ala turquose strat?

Yup its for the daphne strat! i sprayed nitro over the existing paint. No point removing the poly anyway it will take FOREVER to sand it to bare wood

Hi Guys,

Btw, what genre of music do you feel is most suitable just by looking at this guitar?

FYI:-
Poplar: one of the softer hardwoods, nicely resonant with a meaty tone and pleasingly lightweight. Many guitar manufacturers are using this wood as a substitute for alder, as it is quite similar in tone. http://www.guitarsunited.com/faqs.htm#first question

But I can't tell for sure. I'm getting it tested once done... cheers!

Just by looking at the guitar... i think its one for the metal heads.

by the way..is the scale length different on a 24 fret neck? cos i noticed the bridge is already drilled and put in place.

The scale length is 25.5 - cos that is the neck that i have. I'll be shaving a bit off the neck pocket to accomodate the 24 fret neck that I have. Did my measurements. shaving off about 1.8mm from the neck pocket. Currently nice fit with a strat neck. But body too weird for the fender headstock.

i think the guitar wil look nice either with a 4x2 or a 3x3 headstock.. or carvin style 6 in line..
defn no fender style headstock..

the guitar seems it was born to do some proggish rock..

what do you use to shave down your neck pocket and make sure its still straight? plunge router? oh yah an ibanez type headstock would be a nice match for the body imo

Hi Bernard... Congrats on your Wedding... honeymoon plans set to go? p.s. sorry about last sat... the cab driver dropped me off some obscure place where my phone switched to IndoSat.

taypeng, I'll be using a DIY trimmer. Modified Drill Extension attachment with a mini-router assembly kit.

observer: was hoping to see u and penguin...but didnt see u both..hahaha..its okie..khatib murtabak on me then net time we meet!

We got stranded together la bro. He came over to my place so that we can go together but kena play out by the cab driver. We ended up walking in the rain to the main road for 1 KM plus and our feet we drenched by then. We'll meet up soon.

Arthur, I don't think PRS headstock is an option for me now as the paddle headstock I have is rather small. I had wanted to purchase from a canadian source buy they're not shipping to SG.

Also, how soon do you think your No 1 will come to life? I was toying with the idea of putting up a project guitar showcase with a series of workshop from basics like fretboard maintenance, guitar setup, soldering, wood tone difference, etc... I wonder if DIYers here will be interested to participate. Sometime June Holidays? I think I can secure a place large enough for 25 pax seated for workshop with space to display our favourite projects. Maybe one amp corners to try out (with permission from generous owners).

What say you guys, esp seniors:- fgl, penguin, shredcow, edder, chanmin, grey etc?

omg that would be an awesome idea man...can exchange ideas and tricks...i think my no 1 will be done in like 1 to 2 months cause now got no money at all...haha

My latest project finally completed. Began last year. The paintjob was a female dog. But thankfully, my friend pulled it off fantastically.

This guitar was done by Guitar Connection. Full nitro. Neck joint tighter than a virgin. Must go take pics of the polished bone nut to show... The thing sustains very well, and the ash body is only 3.12lbs. The neck is qtrsawn mild flamed maple 1 pc from WD necks. The pickups are Fender John Mayer Big Dippers. This thing can pass off as boutique man... Kudos to GC on a job well done.

Whoa, that looks great. Btw, did you take the Big Dippers out of a JM strat? Because as far as I know, Fender doesn't sell them separately, and I've been jones-ing for a set. :(

Oh then it's out of the question for me. >_< Grats on your completed guitar though, probably sounds even better than it looks :D

Total Niceness... whitestrat, you want to post a sound clip of that baby? It'll complete the testimony

I'll see what I can come up with. I swear... The guys out did themselves with this one. I don't think there's anything to complain about this completed piece. Top notch workmanship from the spray job to the assembly. Frets were well leveled, neck is super tight, finish unblemished, electronics work well. And most importantly, the string alignment on the neck is perfect. Almost equal distance from both Es to the edge of the fretboard. Blew me away. Very well set up too! Low action with no buzz. I'm impressed!
