i read the article at work just now. and honestly, it really makes me think about the quality of the Straits Times journalists.
number one. "people into the emo fad listens to bands like My Chemical Romance, Aiden, Hawthorne Heights and Fall Out Boy etc." for goodness sakes! these are just bands! and if the journalists had been following up on things like they SHOULD have, they would quickly tell the difference between the couple of bands mentioned above. My Chemical Romance is anything but emo. they don't sing about anything that has got to do with breaking up with a girl, or even wanting to commit suicide, for that matter. their lyrics have a deeper meaning than the words itself. and from theier newest album "The Black Parade", one can so obviously tell that My Chem is anything but emo. and Fall Out Boy. GOD, please. emo? hell no! those journalists really need to do their homework.
number two. "people into the emo fad have hair covering their eyes, wear dark colored clothes and their choice of footwear is usually Converse canvas shoes." hello? since when did fashion come into contact with slitting wrists? plenty of people do not get a haircut even if their hair is covering their eyes. plenty of people like to wear black out. and more than plenty of people wear Converse canvas shoes. so does this mean that people who just happen to wear dark colored clothes and Converse shoes are emo? then i think the government ought to ban Coverses in Singapore.
number three. this has got to do with the quality of research, actually. has anyone noticed that they only published whatever people who slit their wrists has said? why didn't they publish what those who don't said. yeah, only one. Paul Twohill. how about normal people? those who hasn't gotten any stardom before? we might constantly don dark colored clothes, hair with long fringes and Converse shoes but do we cut ourselves? no. we just happen to like the fashion sense of one of music's sub genre, but we definitely do no cut ourselves because "my boyfriend broke up with me" or "because my dog died".
come on, you people. take a closer look and get to know such people before generalizing what "emo" is all about.
and oh, please do not take my nick as a point to retaliate me on. i'm in fact, a very happy girl. thank you very much.
