Its a totally accessible outlet for teens... I mean, when you hear the "emo" bands whine about teenage angst, who catches on? The teens. They will identify with it... though, (i hope) they grow out of it.
Music is a spiritual, emotive thing and it speaks to the both soul and heart. Emo's much the same as how rock/jazz/blues influences people, just that emo does it "better" when used on teens.
Cheez, look up the lyrics of the said "emo" bands... you would be able to see how teens tend to relate to such music.
That said, I would want to be careful if I had children who listen to such music. And rap. And metal. And punk. And .... the list will go on and on... world's not getting better...

Listening to rock and then screw a whore in Geylang = $50
Listening to metal and then smoke weed in the backyard = $100
Listening to emo , knife from your kitchen ; self mutilation = PRICELESS
To me I find emo kind of dangerous as compared to the other genres of music which has suffered similar attacks from concerned members of the public.
To me it is very "accessable" to cut yourself because its free. "Free" as in you can just take a knife from your kitchen and engage in self mutilation as compared to listening to metal/rock and then you would need to pay a certain sum of money to engage in those activities (drugs , casual sex etc) in order to "put theory into practical".
Basically teenagers find it the easiest way to put "theory into practical" and being teenagers , they're living on their parents allowance and hence I doubt they have the financial capacity to buy drugs or engage in casual sex with a prostitute upon listening to rock/heavy metal music.
So they tend to source for other alternatives to "put theory into practical" and as such "emo-ish" activities provides the best choice for these teenagers.
I hope you get what I'm trying to say because I equally am quite concerned about this emo fad myself.

Think of this way.
Listen to rock and then ,"I feel like screwing a girl..." But I can't because screwing a whore cost $50
Listen to metal and then ,"I feel like taking drugs..." But I can't because drugs cost a bomb (definitely not teenage friendly) and its inaccessable for one to purchase drugs in the open market.
Listen to emo and then ,"I feel like cutting myself...." I can jollywell go cut myself up. Just go to the kitchen take knife and cut my wrist or perhaps go down to NTUC to get one for say $5? I can lie to my dad that I need a penknife for my school project and then secrectly cut myself up. The possibilities are endless....

Emo really is irritating. i know of a person who wears orange. literally. orange emo specs , orange watch , orange handband , orange crumpler , orange stapler , mechanical pencil , highlighter , shoes.

But really julius there was once i asked myself. In the WEEKEND video X japan basically made everyone of their members besides Toshi die.
Hide - smashed up a room and went berseker and died
Taiji - shot by someone
Pata - poisoned drink
Yoshiki - slash on wrist
But X cant possibly be emo. so i came to the conclusion that basically X has the resources/skills to back up their actions also you dont see X japan going all T_T so perhaps emo could be more of an attitude - personality syndrome which leads to stupid things like wrist slashing?
