MIJ DS-1

Guys,
Recently I have managed to get a nice MIJ DS-1, and, as some of you know, its highly regarded as superior to the MIT versions. HOWEVER, my laptop is kapoot! Hence, no recordings can be done. :(

So... If any if you are interested in listening to how different the MIJ DS1 is, drop me a PM of your MSN add. I will add you when I'm home in the evening, so I can just audio you over the net. Using the old family computer so yeah.

I guess many of you guys would like to know how different it sounds, and if its hype or reality?

Oh yeah... a description of the MIJ DS1 compared to MIT DS1 is at my old Comparison OM at well, the OM section. Randolf did a good description.

Personally, I dig the MIJ version SO much more than the MIT one... I'm not letting it go for sure!

oh man! i heard him play the MIJ DS1 SOUNDS SO MUCH DIFFERENT from the MIT i must say! definitely! much warmer, not so gritty and fuzzy, compared to the MIT, which is so not my taste. not bad man!

they dont make MIJ ds1 now?

erm... ok ... ive had both before... and i still sold my mij ... and after awhile.. the ds-1 fever got me again and i bought it again... but it still had this inherent ... harshness that i couldnt live without.

so.. i took my MIT ds-1 to randolf. now after some experimenting i cant live without my randolfed ds-1.

the MIJ vs MIT comparison wont yield very big differences. obvious ones will be a warmer tone from the MIJ.
but my old ds-1 being a old ass pedal was noisy as hell. and due to the DS-1's character... i dissapeared when i kicked it in during jams and gigs. i have mine now with upped mids and bass.

verdict is that all ds-1s can sound GREAT. just needs tweaking.
really no pt hunting down a old MIJ.
btw randolf doesnt pay me to say this.

Hmmm.. thats also a very valid point of view.

Mine was a search like yours too.

I had an MIT DS-1 in the beginning too... loved the sustain and thickness. But it was harsh and i hated the harsh-ness. Had it randolfed but in the end, the TS9DX won me over.

However, I always loved the sustain and thickness. So I got another MIT DS-1.

I gave it to Randolf. FOC.

This time, I really gave up till I found the MIJ.... and WHAM! Its on my pedalboard, and I love it. Its crazy warm and smooth... so much more pleasing than the MIT.
I can see why Satch and Vai use the MIJ DS1. I don't even have the notion to mod my MIJ, except to perhaps do some maintanence work on it. It really is that much better to me ears...

Actually, like what Randolf posted in the other Comparison OM thread, its very true that there is no superior DS-1.

Its a matter of taste.

The MIT has more gain, harsher, better for modern music. MIJ is warmer, more responsive, less harsh.

If modding, the MIT would make a great ULTRA mod. The MIJ will rock better with a SEM mod.

Wow! This is a very interesting and what I feel a very important discussion and sharing of views among DS1 and Mod users. The 1st DS1 that I ever used was an old stock Japanese made bought in the early 80's. It was $40 new then...imagine that! 8O I previously hated the stock Boss orange 3 knober's tone but saw on a stage shot of a live Gary Moore album that a simple DS1 together with a wah pedal was all he had between his Strat and his Marshall stacks. It made me reconsider so to gave it another go if acknowleging a monster such as Gary Moore himself using it so why not? Right? :) Well like most of you I came to realise through the years that you can acquire the guitar, the pickups, the pedals and woodshed in the mountains of shredom for hours on end on a daily basis and still not sound like your hero because besides a master's sheer god like talent through his fingers it's also the full tube Marshall Head, the Tubes, The Stacks, the Mics and the Mixing Console Techniques that make a Big Big difference in that elusive "Sound" I struggled for that sound with my small solid state amp and the JC120 amp! Hehehe. Funny how I could dial in to get the old Police and U2 sounds rather easily but the elusive Shred God like tone was ever so far away!

I do own and use 2 DS1 pedals...actually 3 if we count in a stock one that Shredcow donated that I use for comparison purposes for mod clients to hear the differences so as to allow them to choose what's right for them.

As what I would explain to most about the variation between the Japanese and Taiwanese made DS1. The critical difference is the op amp chip. Typically a Japanese or Taiwanese 1st issue DS1 will have a "black" label on the bottom plate. The op amp chip is usually a TA71364. The Taiwanese made ones with "silver" label on the bottom plate contain the 5223 chip.

Even in stock format, you'll be able to hear the differrence between the black and silver label DS1. The black label sounds thinner and noisier compared to the silver label which is sometimes described as harder, harsher and less noisier.

So the common question "Which is Better he Black or Silver, Japan or Taiwan made?" My answer is that there's really no clear answer to this as it's all about identifyling the strenghts and weaknesses and appllying them in the correctly musical context. You see the black label DS1 when modded makes a great blues rock boost pedal that's more garang than any boutique overdrive pedal but less sever than any Distortion pedal out there now. I love my black label and usually like to set the drive knob at around 7 to 9 o' clock withe tone from 10 to 12 o' clock. Set with a germanium diode in the clipping circuit the tone is incredibly pick sensitive.

Black Label Hint: If you wanna make your boutique Overdrive pedal owner friends really sit up and take notice and watch their faces go green.... The Black Label DS1 with the custom SEM mod is the Killer!

Black Label Suggested setting;

Tone at 9 or 10 o clock
Vol at 10 o Clock
Dist at 7 to 12 o Clock

The Silver label is actually ideal for those into the more modern type of super saturated thick distortion super sustain type of lead sounds. the 5223 chip in the silver labels have a higher threshold for handling high distortion in the signal without generating so much noise compare the the black label.
Silver Label Hint:If you really want that Vai type of lead use these suggested settings;

Full Tube Amp Stack Owners to set all dials on (eg. Marshall or Mesa)amp to 11!
DS1 setting
Tone: 7 o Clock (min)
Vol: 5 o Clock (max)
Dist: 7 o clock (min)

Solid State amp owners set your treble at 2 o Clock, Mid and Bass at 10 or 11 o Clock
DS1 Setting
Tone: 7 or 9 o Clock
Vol: 9 or 10 o Clock
Dist: 3 or 5 o clock (turn down tone to min if you max the dist knob.)

I suppose some are confused by all this variables discussed here about this hunble looking lil Orange Monster of a pedal. Do post so others here may learn, share and help. Hope this has been of service to you guys ya! Merry X'mas and a Happier New Year everyone!

:D

Hah! Aiya you arh Moo! After all this mod this mod that, keep the pedals and build your "Armskot" instead of selling off or trading because it all comes back in a full circle wan! Aiya, See la what happened now that you so itchy itchy sold away the 1st DS1 mod!

Best you fix a date to come by with your stock Ds1 and check out the mods to find out what you like exactly before modding.

...and hey! Get some Sleep!

I think we oughta oraganize a blindfold mod test fest. You may just surprise yourself with this full circle thingy! Hehehehe.

c ya nect week! Wow, Malcom must've done a greaaat Job ya!

Actually, yes, i think a blindfold test should be done. :)

Ah, refretting on next tues.. or this wk if i can gather that wee little bit of cash left... :)

where's the results of the blindfold test?

anyhow i just got my hands on a MIJ DS-1 (black screw; black label).. actually it was by accident.. cos i bought a DS-1 on ebay and thought it was MIT (seller didn't mention anything).. set me back about S$70 in all plus shipping here.. seems like i got a good deal.. haha

Nothing happened. :)

Anyway, I bet you can hear for yourself the difference... and well, depending on your preference, you may never want to touch an MIT DS-1 again.

Thanks to Randolf's excellent job on my SD-2 dual overdrive, I got motivated to experiment with mods. I did my DS-1 (as posted in another thread), my CS-3 sustainer and a couple of other pedals. They sound soooooooo much better than the stock pedals.

If you have some stock boss pedals, you owe it to yourself to get them modded. You will love the new tone and thank Randolf (or whoever mods it for you) for delivering you from nasty sounding pedals into the land of blissful tone.
