MDC? music and dance company

hey I am with MDC as a drummer.Murale here BTW. The thing about MDC is no matter how talented you are, if your PES status is above PES C you will not have a chance to come into MDC even if you pass your auditions with flying colours. With the SAF, the priority goes to combat units and if you are combat fit you will be posted to a combat unit. to dancingdino: basically they audition the artistes in groups as far as i have seen and they teach you a choreography that the whole group has to learn within a timeframe. they will pick from there. they have a few rounds of auditions if I am not wrong.

If I want to get in with my singing, what are the "groups" i can enter?
I know vocal ensemble is one, what are the others I can audition for?
Also, do I have to be able to read sheet music as a vocalist?

I was trying to crack a joke, nothing to do with pride or any of that stuff. But yeah, I am proud to have gone through the route I did for army, some people can go ahead and say stuff like how they keng and be proud of it, i would rather go through where i went. maybe not back then but i wouldn't change a thing now if i went back. you probably had a bad experience if you were from sispec, doesn't mean everyone had the same experience.

dont mind me asking but i really do aspire to be in MDC and i actually dont mind signing on at all! any advice ??????
So since I was in MDC, I'm either gay or weak?

I fail to see your point here and your comment is quite offending.

It sure doesn't make you a better musician per se but if you can get in, thats great! You get to practice your art daily and that will make you a better player than your buddy who spends his whole week in camp running around. I'm glad I got into MDC because it opened my eyes to different music styles and to approach music from a different perspective, plus I get to meet people who are renowned musicians and learn from them. And yeah, I get to play everyday.

And btw, who are these ppl who "brag" abt being in MDC?

what sort of jazz do they want us to play ! is it a on the spot thing where we read score and play???????? that i dont mind but they cant expect me to read a frank zappa black page kinda thing i will obviously die !!! hahah !

how hard is it to get into the vocal ensemble?
also, what do the vocalist "artists" do exactly?

edit:forgot to add smth from my old post, do i have to know how to sight read and sing a melody straight from the score at first glance?

Honestly, if you wanna sign on, OCS is the way to go. Don't expect to get far with a small performing arts company like MDC especially with regards to a huge national defence organisation like the SAF.

I have some words of advice for recruits who want to audition for MDC - its not just about PES status or how damn good you are - its also about timing. You can be the best from Yong Siew Toh/NAFA/Curtin/Julliard but if the spot is taken already, sorry you'r outta luck. Best is to call to check first before you even come down for an audition otherwise you'r just wasting your time.

Oh, and MDC is not all that glitz and glamour that most tend to perceive. Lots of well, shall I say "unexpected" stuff going on behind the scenes, especially with the management :)

imkeith: You can ask me in person next time.

Warren Estrop: When do you enlist? As for how to call, google is your best friend. You can find the no. listed off the website. Note: pls do not quote me when you call, just enquire whether is the spot available and when is the next audition. You can also PM me for more details.

And just a general note to all who are interested to audition : being able to sight read and play on the spot is a must. As for vocals, you will be tested on sight reading but you may get in by your vocal merits if you are deemed excellent and able to sing in accapella group context (e.g, vocal harmony in 3rds and 5ths). Lastly, as I've mentioned earlier, subjected to the availability of the spot you'r auditioning for.

reference letters strengthens your auditions but generally they wouldnt bother. and for you to sign on you must complete your NS first. all of the male DXOs served their NS in some other unit and signed on years later. Serving your NS and signing on with MDC are two completely different things.

Yup, unlike most combat units you can't sign on part of your 2 years as a regular in MDC - you gotta complete your obligatory 2 years first.

So if you haven't enlisted/ORDed yet- I'm afraid signing on is out of the question.

Anyways not having to sign on immediately is not necessary a bad thing - it allows you the opportunity to experience everything in its unadulterated, full first-hand glory(or otherwise). You can then decide if you still want to sign on after that :)

Oh and btw....you might want to bring your own score and ask the regular DXO guitarist to sight read for you to play. Quite inspiring to watch, may I add..... ;)

Will they tell you on the spot if you got in or not?
I auditioned for vocal ensemble and was one of the few who got an interview with the boss, but they never told me if I made it in or not. If I don't get in will they contact me?

Also, I've been enlisted for a year(though i've already told my boss and she said it was fine), do you think they might reject me because of that?
