MDA - Watch This!

it's not all that fun. everybody hates you.

conservatives hate you cause don't cut out enough.

liberals hate you cause you cut out too much.

you can never please everybody.

visa : i guess you have a point.

but its a pretty cool job cause im paid to watch movies. hahaha.

i'll look for a different job then

cliffburton:

the video IS "retarded" because it's intended to cater to "retarded" people, eg the average singaporean.

I bet after the filming they watched it, had a big laugh, some drinks and said "damn, the things we have to do to reach out to the masses..."

You have a point. I bet once they start airing this on TV we'll have kids singing the rap at bus stops.

It's not good when bands compromise their styles just so they can go mainstream and make money, but this 'rap' is supposed to send out a message to the majority.. and i think it'll work.

Visa bro definitely has a valid point there but personally, I think that 360, which was engaged to produce the video, should take the responsibility of a creative agency to churn out something that balances out the various necessary elements.

Singapore is not 100% fully made up of ah bengs and ah lians or uneducated people what.. Why do you think MDA made the call to cater to this group and sort of dumbed it down? The fact that they did it rap style indicates that they were not trying to dumb it down because ah bengs and ah lians don't really listen to rap eh? They rapped because these people can't sing for nuts, I think.

But I wonder why the need to feature the top management? As somebody has said - it's perfectly all right if it's meant for internal circulation, for their D&D or whatever but this is for the general public and for the world leh. How does featuring those talentless people help? They are not easy on the eyes, they can't move, they can't rap to save their own lives.

I think, as with a lot of government bodies, it seems that they always think that they've come up with excellent ideas but their power of visualisation sucks big time lah. They can't seem to put together everything in their minds and imagine the end result. They just stop at coming up with the ideas and that's it - they just do it. They've got the money, they think that can solve everything.

But still, I agree with Visa's direction of argument. I think at the same time, MDA doesn't want to appear pretentious by making it very slick and worthy of playback in MTV or something like that. They worry that if they don't produce something that looks like a Jack Neo production, Singaporeans will not watch or like it.

I really hope that MDA takes down this cringe-worthy clip off their website and YouTube lah. The world is laughing at us man. Singaporeans got billions of dollars in reserves, economy is booming and their currency is strong, they have a world class financial sector and airport and this is what they are capable of churning out? Tsk tsk..

This video is stupid, and i think its a waste of time and effort. Maybe money i dont know. It sure looks damn budget. For local shows, i have to say, the shows are so bloody lame it can not get any lamer. Only PCK was a good comedy to me. My sassy neighbour. police and theif all, comedy for what 8 year old kids ah? Its so not funny and lame lah. Even spongebob squarepants is funnier.

hecklerkoch: you're more likely to find rap on an ahbeng/ahlian's handphone or mp3 player than good rock music. granted you might have to dig through oodles of techno first ^^"

i'm sure all our local directors, actors, film-makers etc are having the same response as us as well

Spongebob Squarepants ROCKS!!!

If only they don't play the same episodes over and over again on Nickelodeon.

yeah, there are actually some hidden messages in there for older viewers too.

it's like the simpsons. if you get the puns and the references and the satire, it's hella funny. if you don't, well, homer going d'oh! is funny too.

visa

No lah, Jack Neo, Mark Lee and Henry Thia are trying their darndest to learn the MDA rap as we speak. And writing the Hokkien version too.

I have a confession to make....

YES YES Y'ALL is fricken stuck in my head and I don't like a single moment of it.
