Les Paul Mods

after many many guitars and thousands of dollars flying away, ive come back to the les paul, not my type of neck, but definitely my type of tone.

so i wanna ask all of you guys, whats the most common mod you do to your LP? ive seen many with many toggle switches, any of you guys have one of those?

for tonal selection and variety- jimmy page wiring, pickup according to taste and personal preference

for stablity and playability- change tuning head, nuts, bridge, stop tail

for volume and tone interation- choose 50s or 60s lp wiring

for god forsaken, lousy music cant save good tone, tone- mojo caps, era correct pots

for all surface and all about look and non musical related mod- relic through artificial means

for "damned, i hate my guitar playing"- rewire 3 way selector as kill switch instead

for i love beng and i am beng- stripped fretbboard and install flashing leds as fret markers, then put back fretboard

for easy tuning- installed those auto tuner that some shops are selling locally

for "i got no money, but i wanna change"- flip the strings over stop tail like some folks who did it

for breaking the limit of frets- defret all frets and make it into lined fretless paul

for now

The only thing i've done is to split the coils and controls using push pulls. Nothing else actually is needed for my Les Paul. It's perfect the way it is. Especially the neck.

i rewired the caps :D .047 for the neck PU ... and .015 for the bridge PU...
and give it treble bleed on the volume pots .... so the will sound sweet and the bridge scream
and change The PU if needed :D
alnico based PU will be good...
change the tuner to 18:1 (or above) gear ratio ... and change the nut

mine isnt a real lp but just another singlecut with 2 humbuckers and 4 controls. i have changed the wiring to jimmy page's one.. and the pickups to lindy fralins 8k for neck 9k for bridge... not really good for high gain though.. but for splitting, it does sound like a strat but not that stratty.. i think my caps are all .047... i think some of the toggle switches are for splitting of coil, out of phase, series wiring etc.. those toggle switches are easier to play around as compared to push-pull pots...

Get 50's wiring and coil taps hahaha, those Jimmy Page out of phase mojo thingos. Also straplocks and hmm .011 - .50 strings. Fat strings = love

P.S the secret to all good sounding les pauls is the tail piece hahaha. Get an aluminum one

I freaking agree...the difference was like day and night on Goose's Orville after he made the switch.

For Gibsons, you can only find it on their custom shop pieces....they dont even make it for their standard line or some of their artiste models.

Gotta swap out mine on my edwards and feel the diff

i dont like the alu tailpiece, it removes a lot of low end and adds a lot of high end and it ends up not thick sounding, i will remove mine sometime in the future

eclipze, i thought 0.22 was more common for bridge and 0.15 in the neck. i just got nos PIO caps for my les paul! they really look quite great and overflowing with mojo

ladyintears, i'd recommend spending some cash upgrading the pots and caps inside. RS guitarworks make superb pots. and nos paper in oil caps. usually les pauls from gibson and epiphone (jap les pauls not so sure) come stock with 300k volume pots. the RS pots are 500k and they will give something like "taking a blanket off the amp" effect. goodby muddy neck pickups. they are costly though but definitely worth the cash. feel free to pm me if u want to like share shipping with me. cos i'm ordering my set next month.

also rewire it to 50s wiring. it helps alot if u are a player that plays with the volume control often. normally rolling down the volume will cause a loss in high frequencies. 50s wiring helps to overcome that.

those Jimmy Page out of phase mojo thingos.

jimmy page's les pauls were nvr wired out of phase during his time in led zep actually. only his telecaster was out of phase. the out of phase tone came from his middle position. they quacked like hell and it sounds out of phase even though its not.

gosh i'm such a nerd

no mod on mine, pcb at the back makes it nearly impossible to mod :(
but i wrapped my strings over my stop tail:D

Hurrah for wrap around stop tail!

Intrigued by the possibilities. I have a beiged out white Epi Custom that I wanna restore. My first real guitar. I want to keep the gold hardware look while bringing out more performance. It's just gonna be a rock/blues guitar.

GHS pickups/ new tuners/ new nut/ 50's wiring/ volume pots change to 500k. Anything else? Orange drops? what what .047 thingys again?

wrap around for higher tension i guess?

is there truth in this?

Maybe your les paul was a dud to begin with :) another one of those gibby lemons?

More often than not most ppl who use aluminium stoptails notice the vast improvement in tone...increased sustain, resonance and less brittle highs.

I dont quite like the wraparound thingy....Tension was wayy to much for me after I tried that once.

I know zakk wlyde loves that though....

cool. first time hearing of aluminium stoptails.
where do i get them? damn but i loved my reliced stock one.. haha

If my brain in my teenage years remembers, Zakk Wylde says it actually decreases tension. I just wanted to be like him~

But what do I know. I play Teles now....

Actually, if you take the Tele as a comparative, with the string-tru body or the 1960-61 string tru bridgeplate methods, it is accepted that the string-tru gives more tension and mojo seekers will say it puts more pressure on the Tele saddles and thus gives you more sustain and Tele bite. The string tru bridge just gives you a different sound. More clangy too in my opinion.

I have a Wilkinson bridge on mine and it gives you both options. Never tried the bridge way. I will do it like they did in Fullerton in '52~

So does string over tailpiece on a Paulie give less sustain? I'm not a Les Paul connoisseur, but I just liked the way it felt when I used to play a Les Paul exclusively.

Buy it from zen....goose and i got a gotoh one for about 48 bucks if i remember correctly...

Its freaking light when i held it in my hand. its about 26 grams, same weight as the ones used on gibson CS guitars....

Gibson guitars use aluminum stoptails exclusively until the 60s....When they switched over to the current zinc ones to cut costs. hehe, typical Gibson...whats new?
