how to make it big

Often enough, I came across bands that started of their slot with much promise: tight introduction for the song, layers of innovative riffs and chord changes, lots of technicalities and a good steady feeling from their music.

Then the vocalists starts to sing and all is lost...

heh, ask them to remove vocalist, do post rok instead

Posted this earlier on a double thread made on the wrong section. Anyway:

Often enough, My friends and I came across bands that started of their slot with much promise: tight introduction for the song, layers of innovative riffs and chord changes, lots of technicalities and a good steady feeling from their music.

Pianomankris: Welcome to Soft, where half of us posts without even thinking ;)

"WE DONT GIVE A SHIT!!!" Yeh...hahaha..rise metalheadz...

You start of this thread by ranting about how it's impossible to make it big in SG then you ended this thread by saying that your intention is not to be famous, and you don't give a shit?

I find that a paradox somehow...

Here's a tip:

1) You wanna "keep it real", just keep doing what you do and don't care about making it big.
2) You wanna be a good band member, practice.
3) You wanna be a good band, work hard
4) You wanna be recognised, perform more
5) You wanna have people listen to your music, record a release and distribute
6) You wanna have fans, make sure the song you release is something THEY like
7) You wanna have a following, spend a few years repeating point 1-7
8) You wanna make it big, take points 1-8 then multiply it by a hundred.

I believe, to make it big, u gotta market yourself well. get lots of contacts that matter. get into their good books. and at the same time, u gotta be special. have killer originals. Do something no band has done or whatever. do smth ppl might like. make sure ur tight as f*ck. lots ogf harwork, sweat and blood. Allways strive too improve. oh oh and use the metronome unless ur gifted with a totally awesome sense of timing and crap. well thats my opinion.

stay souless!

before you've made it big,

have you made it small? do the people in your social circle and immediate surroundings support your music?

if they don't, either your music isn't good enough, you haven't put in enough effort promoting it, or both.

if that's the case, you're not going to make it big anytime soon.

how make it big man: Spend less time online and more time practising/playing/learning/gettingtoknowpeople, etc.

there is not definate way on making it big , its like asking , how do i become the next bill gates . Do you what you think you have to do , and it'll come to you . All the best with that

how make it big man..haiz...spore music its like so on our own...we need a company to sponser these bands to go international...we need a gd label man...sony bmg won't support metal..maybe someone could franchize roadrunner records in spore...then maybe from ther...spore bands can start their journey ther..u guys agree??

true that there are no 'major' labels supporting local metal, but thats because local metal isn't that good yet.

metal = a virtuoso-ish (correct me) genre. you need to be facking good and facking tight.

if you're good you can actually try getting signed by an overseas label. but its hard to be good, cause you're just another metal band in the sea of 298347829374234 metal bands.

and you also must be willing to spend a small fortune on recording your 'demos'. demos from other countries sound like the real thing. ours kinda lo.fi and stuff ah :/

when you finally get a chance to be heard through your demo, make it count. Nobody is gonna wanna listen to a $15/hr recording no offence to anyone :X

how to 'make it big'?

simple ...if you are a guy, you shape your hand like holding a tennis racquet an move it forward and backward slowly then build up to vigourously.....

if a female get them done surgically.......

Ever wondered why those blues musicians better than Rolling Stones and rappers (who are brothers) with a more a killa' flow than Eminem who never got their break?

Luck and skin colour. Middle America buys white, doode...

First of all, I have no idea what 'Middle America' is. Second of all, if you were talking about the US, race really isn't an issue. There are many famous Americans of different race. White, Black, Latino, Asian. USA is really just as, or even more multi-cultural than Singapore. There's no issue at all regarding race unless you live in the South (Tennessee, Texas). Think about it, super-minorities in America make it big, for example, Amerie, who is half black half Korean. And many Chinese-American bands hail from Southern California and do absolutely amazingly.

Countries in general I feel only buy white would be Australia, Britain and probably most of Europe. But as you can all see, Dragon Force is one hell of an exception. Herman Li is Chinese, Sam Totman is English, and ZP Theart is from South Africa (I don't know his origin though). So really, it's all down to talent.

However, if you're planning to do anything in Australia, you're pretty much screwed unless you're white. They're pretty racist there. I got rocks thrown at me when I was on a bus.

This is my opinion, being Chinese-American. Take that into account.

With all due respect, i'd like to dispute the claim about non-whites not being able to make it in Australia. Our own local boys Sanjeev, Wayne and Justin (an Indian, Chinese and Eurasian no less) were huge in the Melbourne circuit.

MySpace.com - The SUNS - Punggol, Tampines & Bedok North, SG - Punk / Rock / Ska - www.myspace.com/thesunsrock

and they're not a one-off either, 3 piece japanese band did really well there too.

MySpace.com - MACH PELICAN - Rock City Melbourne, AU - Punk / Rock / Surf - www.myspace.com/machpelican2005

wonderful stuff!

Secondly, i'd like to bring another point to the table about "luck and skin colour". Luck and skin colour doesn't have very much to do with commercial success- at the end of the day, the most consistently successful people are those with the best marketing, promotions and strongest fanbases.

Record companies don't promote "lucky" artistes at random- they have a business to run and children to feed. They promote those which they believe will be successful and draw the largest crowds- and these are the people who are already drawing the largest crowds on their own because of their self promotion and marketing.

My 2 cents!

If I had a penny every time this kinda thread comes up.....

To be PERFECTLY and TRUTHFULLY honest....LL lor

What to do? The world is like that.....Start your own label, support your own kind of music, promote them. If not its really just suck it in like a man.

Unless you got cash to go overseas and promote your own music there in hopes that some foreign label will sign you.......

Good luck then....You'll need lotsa it

stop complaining about the music scene. its growing little by little, but at least its growing. just focus on the music. you're makin music for the love of the music or just to get known?

ppl who DON't complain abt music scene r to naive & stupid of what is going on here ...

if u approach the big labels (which i have) they couldn't be bothered.... if u live outside sg, u will notice many contries who are less developed have many org / comp that support local music...

if u start yr own label u WILL have a problem with physical distribution coz either the retails couldN'T be bothered again or they seldom give any kind of marketing support:

i don't understand y ppl here think tat is it easy for musicians to survive / make it ???

it seems many SINGAPOREANs are just clueless and just PLAIN LAZY to do research or just DAMn LAZY to start their own label or approach label so they make LAZY comments based on their limited experience: go figure
