how bad is NS?

And the issue of two years.. I know that 2 years seems a long time...

I did the 30 months NS. And that's the biggest bone I have to pick with SAF. Tough training, punishment, extras, stay in - all I can take.

But 30 months (or now 24 months)? Only countries AT WAR serve that kind of NS (eg ROC, Israel). Even now Taiwan has reduced its NS to 22 months.

Personally, 18 months or less would be enough; thank you very much.

SAF shouldn't give crap like how long it takes to train a specialist or officer or long it takes a unit to gel toghether. Instead it should take a long hard & deep look at its training program (like what the MOH is encourage KPMG to do for the NKF fiasco) and further reduce NS period & reservist liability.

The true cost is much more.
Your parents have to put up a bond of either $75K or 1/2 their combined annual salary whichever is HIGHER (I think - pls correct me if I'm mistaken).
This will of course be foreited when you default on NS.

Mervyn Tan's parents also lost a bond of $30k in the 70's. That was enough to buy a Merc 200 in those days.

2 years is not long, I served 2.5 years, with a 5.5 day work week. Now its ony a 5 day work week. So u get to spend 2 nights on ur own bed. So don complain. And now the duffle bags have trolley somemore, durin my time we have to carry that f**kin heavy duffle bag with our hands.

NS aint that bad, every now and then I looked back to my NS days, it always brings a chuckle thinking about all the funny and stupid things that happen. It also build bonds (with ur NS mates) that is probably goin to last a lifetime. If thousands of Singaporean guys can go through this, so can you!

Its more.... We are affected till either we are 40 or more. And for me its totally different, my ICT is once every 3 months... That is really a bitch.

I believe in personal choices, and I am sure I speak for some and not everyone when I say this but I cant fight or serve for something that is forced upon me, every 3 months.

Ns isn't that bad if u juz treat it like a mosquito that bugs u..juz dat u can't swat it.. dat's all..it's juz irritating.. juz as bad as it sux.. would u rather s'pore get bullied by neighbouring countries if we dun serve?.. dat's worse.. guess it's juz a necessary evil..

Most of the time NS is only as bad as you want it to be. Its literally mind over matter. If you don't mind then it don't matter.

Make the best of your time in NS by aiming high.Most feel sian because they are just following and not making decisions. if u feel sian, then its better to be part of the solution than part of the problem.

i think those who r in NS 7 yrs ago will noe the difference........

now..... only 5 days...... better food....... no need 2 clean cook house........ better bed........ got helpline...... got wthe dun noe wat officer which can tell them ur problems or compliants.........

n last time we did push ups like no need $ 1...... now i heard tat got max numbers of times which r allowed........

so if ppl like mi can have no problem completing NS abt 7 yrs ago, i think most CAN surely clear this 2 yrs lor....... :wink:

ns is great, is a real stepping stone in life. it makes u know the society better ( learn how to slack, suk up to boss). u can see true friends over there, and u will be more mature and eventually will worry about yr future. at least for me

Kantiancosmonaut, unless you get into MDC ( Music & Drama Company) ...NS...is a complete waste of time.. no productivity at all... wasted my two years there.

yes! it is much more relaxed now as compared to the 70s or 80s.. but its not the training..its the amount of time wasted.... training to defend this wonderful island..! where we could have spend it doing something more productive like practicing your guitar, drums, bass, keyboards.... etc instead of digging... shoooting guns... waiting... getting injured or maybe even dying for WHAT..? for nothing..!!!


either you get into MDC or try to get yourself out of it.. which is almost impossible.
