I'd say, just get what you think fits your playing style best - don't bother about the nuances yet.
Like, oh, metal ar? Just grab something that a lot of people recommend for metal, or easier, just follow which every guitarist's tone you like.
Thereafter, you'll get a better understanding of pickups.
Some things, you can't just talk/read about it. Its almost silly! You have to experience it yourself.
Just note that you don't want to end up making permanent changes to your guitar - e.g. Want this pickup but need to route guitar. That's a permanent modification and you might regret it later.
