I still think the RG7421 / RG7621 are excellent 7 stringers! I fitted my RG7421 with Dimarzio Blazes. sounded awesome but too bad as of now, I have to recoil both my neck and bridge cos the coils broke. dang.

still, all I wanna say is, fixed bridge ERGs ftw!

Yeah I enjoy playing the 7421, i still have the stock pickups on. The V7 and 8 pickups are really quite cool, they're tight and articulate unlike those pickups on the newer models. I had to change those on the RGA8 first time i heard them, muddy and all over the place - i dreaded playing it till the pickups were swapped. The Aftermaths are superb!

And yes to fixed bridges!

Out of curiosity, how did you broke the coils?

Out of curiosity, how did you broke the coils?

The springs for the pickups were too long and the screws were screwed in quite a bit hence causing the humbucker to split slightly. I think that caused the coils to break. One coil from each humbucker broke and on top of that, they broke at 3 different places. since it was a "rare" Dimarzio pickup (the material of the old ones were slightly different), I decided to have it recoiled instead of getting new pickups. I like the tone coming from that pickup set and it'd make no sense to change to something new to experiment with.

lesson learnt, use shorter springs.

That sounded like a super rare case scenario. I am sorry for your loss.
How do you know how much to coil for the pick up? Do you have to remove all the coils?

not too sure about that. I left the job of coiling the pickup to Kelvin of GC. He has done it by hand (only because he doesn't have a machine) for quite a few pickups and so far the results have been good. He did recoil a Dimarzio PAF Pro for a Jem77BFP (cos that light blue colour was unique for dimarzio) before and it sounded damn nice!

Scott from sound alchemy has a machine to recoil pickups which is a good thing. However, he has 2 different sizes for his coil wires and even though he can coil to the same output at a faster rate, he did explain that the sound would be affected in terms of response. must pick the right one but since the sizes are so similar, how to tell?! It's good only if you want to recoil for the sake of getting back the output.

btw for both guys, all the coil wires are of different size and the one that Kelvin uses cannot be used for the machine. I'm reluctant to read up on this as pickup coiling is a once in a blue moon thing for me.

Fender single coils are the ones without any tape to protect the coils right? I've never opened up one before but think i saw it before. Only opened up humbuckers to experiment with changing pick up magnets.

You should have joined my bandmate with his order a few weeks back. He used a coupon to obtain a 10% discount on the amp!

J.Custom it's a Humboldt Blues Jr. Amazing amp actually having heard it at bedroom levels and in the studio. It is the only single speaker amp alongside the Deluxe Reverb Reissue that can sound so BIG.

Godspeed bro, I wanted to. But clearance from singapore customs and CNB took so darn long thy I missed TWO discounted sales.. Sigh, as long as I got it!!
