Tried a few 70s Les Pauls at GC. There was one point in time where they had a few. Those guitars were H E A V Y! Probably because of the design of the LP custom back then. Maybe the weight attributes to the overall tone?

Anyway, they sound great (With original Pat Pending PAF pickups, how could you go wrong?) but with such huge price tags on them, I would rather just stick to a regular 90s made Gibson Les Paul Standard.

Back in the 70's, there was a common belief among guitarists that the heavier the guitar, the better the sustain. Of course this was also perpetuated by the marketing people from Norlin and CBS. It was an excuse for them to justify their cost cutting measures, especially the (lack of) drying of heavy lumbers. Nevertheless, you still can find some gems among the 70's instruments.

I decided to take a family shot of all my Ibanez guitars. New acquisition of the year are the RGs, second and third from the top.

1991 RG550 which I refinished with material finish and 1998 RG520QS.

Thank you Beez for the rewiring.

You really have a thing for Evos, duncha? LOL

You did the right thing by walking away. Why let this arrogant schmuck earn your money?

Indeed, I wonder if this is a Singaporean thing, i.e, shop owners/sales assistants being not exactly cordial. Not just at guitar shops, but just about everywhere. Used to get the same treatment when I was young(er) and wandered around car showrooms. They were right though; I couldn't afford jack-sh*t. But that's not the point, right guys?!

With the internet and increasingly convenient and reliable international delivery services, I wonder how long such ignorant and arrogant bozos expect their shops to stick around. I've been lucky, or unlucky, that my job allows me to travel a fair bit so I can A-B service standards. Anyhoo, I digress...again!

Yes, today I woke up, had a GAS attack, flipped through the 100 best stomp boxes issue of Guitarist and zero-ed in on the Electric Mistress. Popped down to Davis, asked some questions which were patiently answered, pedal was demo-ed to me and now I'm flanging away! See, good service equals nice quick transaction!

Happiness Hotel! :D

you are one of the very few people without an entirely black Ibanez- i've been trying to avoid this... he he...

Yea, the black floral at the topmost was all black, and after my DIY curiosity and love for floral finish got the better of me, I decided to refinished it. I am starting to honestly appreciate oiled finish now. Love the 3d depth the oil creates for the wood.

70s Gibson don't come with with PAF pickups. The last run of PAFs ended in 1962, after that the Patent # no. pickups took over (Patent no. is different from PAF). If the guitar is a 70s piece it will definitely not be a PAF, unless you played an early 60s LP. It's likely that the guitar had T-Tops, or Tim Shaw pickups. Both are great pickups though, and the prices of T-Tops today are increasing.

Norlin Era Gibsons are not that expensive actually. Like I said they are equivalent to Fender's CBS era and it's associated with a big drop in instrument quality. Pancake bodies are just ugly and undesirable.

It was an RG520qs which I sand down to bare wood and refinished with handrubbed tung oil. The oil gives the wood a lot more depth. Especially the quilted veneer.

Sup guys.
Finally got my American Special Telecaster a few days ago.
A/B it with the American Standard Tele, and the American Standard Strat.

The strat was disappointing la. I wanted to get the American Special strat, but the tele was here earlier, so went down to try, and I LIKED IT.

Anyway here's the pics.

the American Standard Tele had that extra something in it..
Maybe it's the nitro finish on the standard..
but I don't have the extra $320 to fork out.
So I got the American Special instead.

Anyone have this tele too?
I desperately need to talk to someone who owns this.
Thinking of upgrading it.
The texas specials sure sound nice.
But like something missing..
I'll play more and see if I'll get used to it haha.

Hello all,

on the tip-off by Subversion's post in his blog, I went down to Davis and bought this!

aria_dm380.jpg

Ok, I didn't give it much of a test drive at the shop because I didn't expect too much from the guitar. Hey, it is 195 bucks afterall! What I did though, was to walk straight to SV to see if anything could be done to enhance it. As fate would have it, Mike who usually isn't at the Peninsula branch in the morning, was there! So, we played around with the guitar a bit and decided to give it a pair of Tesla P90 pups, an orange drop, new strings and a proper setup.

I've not had much time with it yet, but so far, the guitar sounds good and I especially love the distortion tone. Something really different from the usual single coils and humbuckers. The only gripe I have with it thus far is that the tuners are somewhat loose, i.e, expect to tune it quite often. Switches and knobs work fine and feels ok, build quality seems fine and I really like the colour.

I suppose if one isn't picky about the original pickups, it is a decent guitar to begin playing around with. However, I would recommend it getting it set up properly first. Different people might have different expectations of this guitar, but if you look at it as a basic starter guitar that look and sound different from the other usual strats and lps copies at this price bracket, I think its definitely worth a try. Once I get more time with it, albeit with non-original pickups, I will try to give as accurate a review as possible.

Oh yes, I also picked up this beauty yesterday:

Fujigen EOS with swamp ash body. Sounds super clear!

^ hey dood by how much did the fgn lighten ur wallet?

Greetings bf0502tr! The fgn took off approx. 2k plus a wee bit, close to 11 Aria DM-380! Was given quite a fair bit of discount from the list price of about 2.7 because of my charming good looks. Plus I've bought quite a few stuff from the lovely couple! :)
