GE / Polling Day on 07-May-2011

to many of us who think the 2011 GE is a let-down, do remember that the overall statistics showed the ruling party's popularity had taken a dip.

hehehe...
the other reason why got s/no.

Excerpt from http://www.elections.gov.sg/voters_ballotsecrecy.html ...

So, is ballot secrecy compromised by reason of having a serial number?

Theoretically, it is possible for anyone with access to the ballot papers to identify who cast a particular vote. The link between the ballot paper number and the electoral register through the counterfoil does facilitate tracing from a ballot paper to a voter's identity on the register. However, ballot papers can be examined only under strict conditions, and there are safeguards that make it extremely difficult to find out how any particular voter voted.

definitely a let-down.

I expected the opposition to lose with RAZOR thin margins for the Bishan-TP & Marine Parade GRCS (sadly not razor thin enuff, and the pappies got away with it by the skin of their teeth); WP win Potong Pasir & Joo Chiat (nail biting finish this)

And where the heck are the other 6+++ % of the eligible voters?!

yup, i thought so too.
it's still a big win (81/87) for them.
i felt that losing one grc and one smc is not enough for them to be really on the balls for the next 5 years.

WP and other opposition parties need to garner strength from here. Ideally, if all the major opposition parties would MERGE into a single party under a strong leadership, that will be a major step forward in Singapore politics. I believe with that happening, it will take 2 or 3 more elections before the oppositions can deny PAP a two-third majority, and hence able to form an effective shadow cabinet. And that will be a true First World Parliament.

Will a true first world parliament really benefit singaporeans?

Is that really the best option?

the so called 'first world parliament' is just a tag line for wp to sell themself
main purpose of opposition (IMHO) is have someone to question their policies (gst increase, price hike and healthcare hike) before they are implemented.
without someone to question or vote against, they can implement anything, everything they like.
so why not ask yourself, is 100% of the policies implemented over the 5 years beneficial to singaporeans ?

Sorry but whats the big deal of losing George Yeo? The man who initiated the casino, sent his son overseas for operation when the PAP said we have a 1st class medical here! and while the family is away overseas, can renovate his home some more.. I'm sure the so called PAP "A" team government have capable people to replace him. There's 81 of them, all hand picked right? If they can't do it, why not give Worker's Party Chen Show Mao the job then. His portfolio is quite impressive too. If die die must be a PaP, send Tin Pei Ling then. Why not? Hand picked candidate by the PM what!

So much coverage on George, how about another fallen hero, Chiam See Thong? He has been our alternative voice for the past 27 years, held his meet the people sessions from a void deck cubicle, yet was mooted out by the people of Bishan -Toa payoh. Majority of Singaporeans avoid the opposition like a plague, and serve their self interest more than national interest. They are afraid that their house value will drop, kids future tarnished, and get marginalized by the gov. Singaporeans think that the opposition are a stumbling block in parliment, a bunch who will oppose everything that is proposed in Parliament. I salute to the people of Aljunied, for taking the bold step in choosing the opposition and having a vision that is beyond the conformity.

Everyone is entitled to their own opinion whether we agree with it or not.
So I'll not get drawn into discussing the whys, whos, how comes etc... on GY.
(i'm not pro-pappies btw)

Its good that you've let known your thoughts though. *thumbs up*
So yeah, your comments are noted.

The young good man that posted above me supported denying the PAP a two-third majority. And a shadow cabinet. I just don't understand the obsession that many people have with this sort of system.

Definitely, not everything our government is doing actually benefits singaporeans. In fact, i believe that a large portion of their decisions were made on the behalf of our foreign talents, and other interests.

But look at the effectiveness of that legendary two-party system in Britain and in the US. Do you think Singaporeans are better off today? Or are the Americans and British better than us?

You don't understand because you are already so used to the elitist, high-handed and unilateral style of governance from a single party system. And most people DO care whether the things our government is doing are for the benefit of Singaporeans, hence the biggest drop in support for PAP in this election. You don't have to worry if others think differently. Not everyone follows your "new world order" theory.

I'm not an oracle, so i cant predict the future of how a shadow cabinet can benefit singaporean.

but from the current state, i can see a lot of old people selling tissues, collecting cardboard, begging for a living.
some even sleep at void deck, bus stop and bus interchange, this is something i believe the gahment can do more or at least don't squeeze more from the people.

i suppose most of us here are average singaporean, we will just curse and swear when they do gst hike or transport hike and our live still goes on.
how about those lower income group and those struggling with 3 meals ?

please do not have this mentality that oppo will only create trouble in parliament or object to all policies that the ministers wanna implement.
if it's good for the country and people, i believe they will support the policies too.
it's some of those unjustifiable policies that is good to have an alternative voice (hike hike hike)

btw, i'm not a young man, but i dont mind being called as a young man (it feels good :) )

What will the normal Singaporeans do when they come across these old/poor people?

NOTHING. Look the other way.

Until the day when Singaporeans become more caring and gracious, we will continue to see social problems.

If every Singaporean give a helping hand to those in need, Singapore will definitely be a better place.

For a start, we can take the initiative to chat up anyone who are in need of help. Understand their situation. If can help, help. If cannot, at least comfort them by offering time to listen to their woes. Buy them a meal, a coffee or bun.

No need for PAP/WP/Opposition party to tell us to do it.

It is just a matter of whether if we want to do it.

Will we do it?

of course we can help to buy the tissues, do all those things u suggested.
but does that solve the root cause ?

and if there are further price hike, the money they earned will not be enough for 3 meals a day.
elderly of 80+ still have to do those stuff to get their life going ?? ... something is wrong right.

this is a social problem, individual can only help this much. more can be achieved through policies

+1. The oppositions are not so free to oppose everything for the sake of opposing. It will also reflect badly on them, and they know it. People need to change this age-old government-led misconception and flawed mentality of having oppositions in the parliament.

I think "young man" reference is me. Likewise it feels good being called "young" again. :)
