hi.. what so good about these pickups? how they will make the guitar sound like.. im a noob.. so i hope u guys can help me. and where can i get them and at what price range?

they are super high output active pickups. you need a battery for them to function. they sound.. powerful (listen to zakk wylde). cleans are a little sterile though. generally would do the job for you if you're playing metal. i think around 300 for a pair from davis.

i called them in the afternoon they said every pup like the 69 and 85 are 135 each the kfk is 280 haha...wonderin if shld get kfk or 69 and 85

Emgs have a unique sound. Most of the time referred to as "sterile".

i beg to differ. ive an 81/60 combo and i love its tones with distortion. however, i agree that its forte is high gain distortion tones.

when the gain is toned down or when its on clean, the tone is indeed flat

Even though its lacking the tone when its clean or low gain-ed.

wont your pedals make up for the tone loss?

Have you ever tried to make an electric piano sound like a piano?

Nope, pedals will not make up for tone loss.

I too once had the same feelings with regards to EMG pickups, sterile, made for metal etc. I don't really blame you guys or myself since most of their endorsees comprise of metal bands - Metallica, Fear Factory, Meshuggah etc.

But artists like Lukather, David Gilmour, Vince Gill etc use them as well.

I'm currently using an EB/MM Luke loaded with EMG pickups, they're far from sterile. Cut through the mix like a hot knife through butter. Full of clarity and definition. You can hear every single damn nuance on these pickups, a clear signal for me to clean up my technique.

They're an acquired taste for sure. But most die hard passive players love the single coil tones of the SA and SLV sets. My friend who swears by his Suhr V60s love the tones I get from my single coil positions. I can get a pretty nice "Axis Bold as Love" tone from my second position, mixing both neck and middle single coils.

I suggest you try EMG's lower output range. There's load of good tones waiting for you right there.

Don't come cheap though, and they also require space for a battery. So do choose wisely.

Christopher.

Hmmm... I don't see how "cutting thru the mix, full of clarity, definition, hearing all nuances, clear signal" relates to "sterile"?

 Shredcow, the world doesnt revolve around you, ya know?

No it doesn't, people who have met me in real life know I'm not that sort.

I'm asking an honest question... sterile vs cutting thru/definition/clear signal.... i don't see the link?

If you do, please let me know. Its really an honest question.

Maybe I should put emoticons next time.

I'm not sure I quite understand the question, to me the term sterile used figuratively to describe a pickup's tone probably means the lack of character and life.

To me the pickups on my Luke pick up the nuances in my playing very well and do a very good job at it as well. The bridge pickup, the EMG85 is not as hot as its metal counterparts and is actually pretty low gain in nature. The SLVs are just about as great as a strat pickup tone that I have ever come across. I'm able to get really nice vintage type tones from the split positions.

That in itself is more than I could ever ask for in a pickup.

I think they are great pickups, like I said going active is acquired taste, tone is subjective afterall. No harm in trying them out. If you like them, then good for you man, getting the right gear and tone is a huge part of the equation of becoming a good player. This guitar and the tone I get from it can only be described as something motivational to my playing.

Personally I think u can get a pretty decent Jazz tone outta ur 85 if you roll off the highs and have it in the neck.....

EMGs does sound unique in their own special way....I do feel that u gotta do some tone shaping to get EMGs to sound good......

Ah... now i see where you are coming from. I thought sterile = cold sounding, thats all.

There was a vid of Steve Lukanther on youtube, jamming with Marty Friedman, both on practice amps (i assume) and both guitarists used their signature guitars. Luke had what I would term a sterile tone but it was very articulate, dynamic.

I was recently looking up pickups because I had to get single coils for my new guitar, and was considering emgs.

However, EMG only has those SLVs and SAs no?
