ebow can be used just like a guitar pick, there can be dynamic and position of placement which can vary the sound you get, as like a guitar pick
as the ebow is closer to the pickup, the speed at which the strings vibrate will be faster(as in the start up time, from still string to vibration) and sound will be heard more abruptly(if no using fretting fingers sort of like a damper. As you bring the ebow away from the pick up area, the sound will kinda fade off softer but remain in the back ground.
And if you reverse the order, by putting the ebow away from the pickup area and slide it up closer to the pickup area, you might be able to do a volume swell thing.
Another thing on the dynamic, sometime the time for the ebow to react and make the string vibrate might take a tiny little while, and if you wanna speed up a bit and yet smoothly sounding, you can try to put the ebow to the string harder a bit and at the same time, do some vibrato with fretting hand, on the string that we want it to vibrate.
when the string is vibrating, try pressing down the ebow on the string and slide it up or down, can get a high pitch shreeking/ghostly sound at times. Add in delay to spice up the texture.
If wanna try, can use the ebow for strumming also. The groove at the bottom actually can give some interesting sound at times as you fretting finger running up and down on fretboard while strumming with the ebow..
