Ends may be hard to meet, but why sink so low as to make your customers pay for hidden charges? This can be ILLEGAL in fact. The term "consultation fee" exists for a reason. So use it.
In the end, why ruin your own reputation for 20 bucks?
Had he mentioned that he asked for the cost, and the guy said it would be $10 for consultation, and ended up asking for $20, it would be a different story. I'm not sure how else you could explicitly state the price over a telephone conversation.
Any more takers? How much would have been a reasonable amount?
I don't really think that's the point. You called him and asked him over to check on your tv. I'm curious as to how much would be a reasonable amount. The guy did travel all the way to your house to provide a service, albeit one you were not too satisfied with.
Tell you what. I'll offer $20 to the first person who wants it, to come to my house and open my tv, then close it back. Any takers? (offer not available to those who know where I live and happen to live nearby )
Precisely. His modus operandi should be to state a basic/mandatory consultation fee on the phone first, + actual repair charge on site.
In a matter of morals, it is only right that the threadstarter pay for asking the repairman to come down and the repairman not ask the threadstarter to pay as no cost was mentioned in the first place.
Anyway, it is natural that human beings assume on issues that will benefit them.
Let us not dwell on modus operandi of marketing strategy, as this example pales in comparison to the what big colglomarates are passing off as hidden costs to consumers.
Whatever the case, either the guy is genuinely trying to hide pricing or not. I don't think he gained anything from it anyway, time and transport was already spent on his end. $20 more or less just barely covers that.
Anyway, it is natural that human beings assume on issues that will benefit them.
Thus will this group of human beings be likely in the category of being exceptional or just petty whiners? Do you want to belong in this group?
If not, is it not your own onus as a consumer to find out everything before commitment?.
As we Singaporeans strive to maintain our world class standards, should we not shed away our inner ugliness as well. What is the use of being squeaky clean outside when the ugly singaporean head rears itself out without fail? Quick to blame, slow to admit.
Following your argument mikemann, then the repairman should not be paid as well because he did not find out if he will be paid in the first place. The whiners etc. argument applies to him too.
It's 2 sides of the same coin isn't it?
Sure it pales in comparison to the big corporation. Low crime equals no crime doesn't it
And then there is the possibility of price discrimination. How would you know the repairman didn't just pluck that $20 pricing from the air according to his mood? For all you know he may just live down the street 5 mins away. The transport cost will be moot then.
This time the repairman isn't too much in the wrong because he charged a reasonable price. Had he charged you $200 for the exact same thing and you complain about it that would put you in your own class of whiners, no?
But mikemann you do have a point. Whichever person the situation sides with, the other person will complain. Now that's uniquely Singapore 8) though not everyone of course
Changing topic. So, do you always assume on issues that will benefit you?
Do you think that that is good & beneficial habit to have?
Do you think that this trend is becoming more prevalent with the coming younger generations? Does good parenting or have internet (virtual interaction = less accountablility) affect this trend?
