Do Not Fall Into This 'PLAY FOR FREE GIG'!

i think in singapore, bands shouldn't demand to be paid for gigs. unless there's huge demand (paying-audience or organisers) for their (band) time/performance. you want money, go get a job. or best, get a job as a musician, play in bars/perform etc. otherwise my p.o.v that you shouldn't taint your passion with the dollar bills. unless the bucks are willingly covered by someone.

imagine your band gets paid for your 1st.. 2nd.. 3rd.. gig (must be real lucky).. what are the chances of you not thinking that "you deserve to get paid for your next performance" for your 4th gig? and if you're cool with no pay, what about your band members? and if your band's cool with no pay. that's cool then. but you can see how some of the bands that think otherwise, can never look at "playing at gigs" the same way (a.k.a freebie/passion/pay to play nvm show support)

FATCAT, I do not think fgl is of any malice though the posting did not defend my position thus it looks it is the other way. He asked the organizer to reply and I did through pm not putting any of the performing bands into aawkwardness.

PEACE

Heartrocks'pore - I am neutral without malice or prejudice but since I dont know you personally or have worked with you before I'm not gonna "defend you " or otherwise join the band wagon ...I do however admire the way you have dealt with this thread with dignity.

Fat CAT - peace...

I say again ... if anyone has proof of such "goings on"... we as musicians have the right to know... but if you dont have proof then it's just slander...

I invite all you guys, bring along your friends and if the true voice is willing, come down this coming Sat and let's discuss this thing about bands getting paid or not. It will be interesting.

Live Show, not computers is HeartRock's business!!! 8)

hey fgl, maybe you would like to share with us how you transit from jamming to getting paid gigs?

i am sure alot of the younger musicians here would like to earn some pocket money.

for me,

14 years old - youth band perform at shopping centre ($200 for the whole band, $60 goes to bus rental. yes, we bring the whole pa + instrument)
17 years old - me with Technics keyboard play for private function ($300). i am like the karaoke machine.

I AM VERY SHOCK! NOW ALL EVERYBODY SAYS I AM A SLANDERER.
I AM NOT SLANDER ANYBODY.
I ONLY BELIEVE THAT ALL THESE PUBLIC GIGS MUSICIANS MUST GET SOME MONEY FOR THE WORK THEY PERFORM ONSTAGE.
DONT YOU ALL THINK IT IS A LITTLE FAIR?
YOU TAKE TRANSPORT TO THE STUDIO YOU HAVE TO PAY!
YOU PAY FOR STUDIO TIME, SOMETIMES YOUR GUITARPLAYER COME LATE YOU EXTEND, YOU PAY.
YOU HAVE TO BUY NEW STRINGS. YOU NEED TO BUY NEW DRUMSTICK WHEN THE SINGAER BREAK IT. YOU NEED TO BUY BASS STRING.
ALL YOUR MONEY GO OUT AND NOTHING COME IN.

OUR SUPPORTIVE GOVERNMENT ALSO SAID THAT NOTHING IN SINGAPORE IS FOR FREE.

I AM WASTING MY TIME ALL OF YOU CAN GO F**K SPIDER.
FGL YOU F**K THE BIGGEST SPIDER BECAUSE I HATE ARSENAL FOOTBALL TEAM!

MANCHESTER UNITED IS THE BEST!

i think heartrock of singapore is organising band performance to promote local bands at the same time giving opportunity for new bands,amateur..etc bands to show their talents. Its a good start for them plus exposure....its not really money making thing or taking advantage of any bands that is performing for free.If you really wanna get paid performing then play in a pub or be a recording artise first. What so big fuss about playing for free?if you are really good and very lucky enough, somebody may want to sign your band a recording deal....from there you might get paid for your band performance.....

Hey man, i do believe that if the bands want to play for free, power to them. if they want to earn money, they gotta look for it somewhere else..anthony's doing a really great job at what he's doing already. don't go around screaming your fool head off man.

and being an organiser of gigs myself i must say that it's not easy even with funding sometimes, the sponsors give only limited financial support and expect you to put up a world class gig. it's only possible if we put in some of our own cash.. leaving us with even less money to offer bands some pay. think of it, there's other ways to "earn" other than by paying you cash, the bands, are they earning even if they're not paid in monetary terms for the work that they do onstage? do they earn in terms of experience, fame, opportunities? are you really sure that "all your money go out and nothing come in"?

maybe you're just a little too money-minded..

Though i must agree that Manchester United is the best.. heh!

I think TBA is the best...

TBA (Tamil Brotherhood Association) is the division one club I played for when I was a teenager squaring off Singapore Marble (Choo Seng Quee) & Tampines Rovers in the early 70s

Please support local football clubs even as you support local music and bands

Wow Heartrock, you must have played either along or against the S.Rajagopal, Mat Noh, Dollah Kassim and the Quah brothers during your time then :)

I think only famous bands should get paid for gigs...if you're not famous...not everyone would wanna come and see you...if your guitarist's late for studio sessions, in what way is that the gig organiser's fault? Lol...

But I do agree with the_true_voice on one thing...Man United is the best! As much as we wanna support the local league, we do know the harsh truth...

darknessfury.cough. YES. although must give singapore some credit, they beat iraq 2-0..but i dont know how they lost to palestine? nevermind, it's a good sign.

going off topic..heh..all thanks to TBA man

agreed. but why bother starting something like this...no one will listen..there will always be bands desperate enough to play for free. the mindset that organisers are doing bands a favor has been stuck in the singapore scene for a long time...wont change anytime soon. forget it.

btw man u can kiss my ruddy arse.

Were you also at Farrer Park around that time? No not Mat Noh but Raja, Dollah and Kim Siak. Didn't get to play with Kim Songa and Kim Lye.

Dream Theatre is better than Electrico. Is that what you mean?
