Do Not Fall Into This 'PLAY FOR FREE GIG'!

Thats the way it is with some of these bodies financial wise I guess....

Singapoer Musician's union when it was 1st set up didnt receive much support either and EVERYBODY wanted to be head honco and treasurer...hence why I never joined .... any current Singapore Muso Union members here now? any feedback?

.

I guess we cannot fault them cos I know they tried their best. In fact you've we never get this kind of support in the past. We too have to prove our passion by doing our part either to bring cost down or to find the additional money to get things going. We cannot develop a crutch mentality that the government should be giving out money for people to have a good time jamming, pat their backside and walk off.

The conditions are not right yet for any muso unions to be formed, but it is good that a few of the so call colletives...soft, aging youth, heartrock, music for good are having excellent relationship of cooperation. Let's see where we go from here.

i think anthony has done a great job, and still is. i remember i gotta even pay to play for 1 of my past gigs...

Anthony, my band would love to play in one of your organized gigs one day =) We did casually chat with you at expo last year I think. Friendly, nice person you are, haha.

amnesiac i think u shld play in one of those gig organize by anthony... Coz imo he is one of the best in organizing gigs.. And true enough he is very friendly....

I have played in one of the gig he organized & we enjoy it very much...

all thanks to anthony....

heartrock, u probably shouldn't even be bothered abt these ppls' comments... ppl like the author i mean... they're stupid, and they'll always be around... after this thread die down and you move on wif ur life, and maybe a few mths later some idiot will start all these again...

true voice, if u r serious abt boycotting u should go start a rally or something... be more professional la...

on a side note i dun understand wat's the big deal with getting paid for gig... why measure in monetary terms? isn't getting free drinks or pop corn also a form of remuneration? this kinda gig if really pays money also not much wat...

let's see what the_true_voice got to say. he/she had posted some similar remarks in the forum but never been able to provide more details.

i hope the_true_voice is not just creating confusion for fun.

The sad thing about the net is that people think that they can get away with saying anything they want to say, as this is NOT the REAL WORLD. Just a virtual space made up of virtual people.

Thats why the mature ones will eventually give less and less input, as there is no point in doing so.

Posts like the one by Changbeer I think most won't mind as there is genuine input and contacts involved. And the progress of the tread is actually give everyone one major comic relieve.

Posts like these is just plain lame-o-blame-o.

So the web as a communicating point has already progress backwards, and older technology like direct meetups and voice communication has become even more credible than before.

I just noticed that the Macdonalds drive thru order kiosk, now have an actual person to just take the orders, as opposed to previously an intercom. So what does that tell you about technology??

Do you prefer to interact to a machine voice operator on phone or someone you can directly F**K when you need to?

Peace 8)

agreed. everyone knows who's right and wrong here. it is very obvious who did the work, and who's an armchair critic.

let's not make too much more of this thread. Do not fall for this ruse made by the threadstarter.

aiyo...

all these in reality is a chicken and egg thing lah.

you need big enough music scene in order for $ to come in. honestly, singapore is not near that stage. so playing for free is normal. this will help build the music scene.

up to a stage where we have enough volume, then i think we can consider paying... but not at this point in time.

mikemann, the web is a tool, just like a hammer. if people use it to hammer each other, we will need to educate them the correct use of the hammer.

see, after 7 pages of posting, we have a better understanding of the issue.

another thing is...

the very fact we need funding support from NAC means we are financially not able to survive through self organized events. which proofs not enough support for this market...

so give heartrock a break...

soft, that's the power of the web. a self balancing force... :)

same thing for the issue of to pay or not to pay. i agree that at our stage, most of us should play for free (in fact, this should be the attitude for bands that just start off regardless how mature the industry).

then forces of nature will balance itself. band will get better and the market forces will tell them that they deserve a certain credit.

as a saying goes:

You pay peanuts? You get monkeys.

so no need to start something to suggest who should be paid or not paid. things will balance itself...

The problem here is that I don't see anything new at all. Similar treads have kept resurfacing again and again. People just keep playing the blame game. I blame you, you blame him, he blame them, they blame everyone.

Here is my input. I would rather see people posting pics of gigs, sound or vids clips, reviews, encouragements (or carebearness as a new term coined), constructive critisism, plus...plus....

Ideas being realistically created and put into action (eg. gathering, bbq, chalet, flea mart, conference, workshop, unification, club forming...etc)

Maybe some definative leadership.

HeartRock is a great gig organizer. He's always been open to taking in new bands and he let us do a show to give us some exposure back when we first started. He's a good guy!!

it is just like newspaper, everyday you see similar news. but the good thing about web is that we can response fast and there is interaction.

hopefully these bits and pieces of information will trigger something bigger.

agree. can we do something else rather than the "i love this" or "i hate this"?
